Desperately Seeking Solutions

Desperately Seeking Solutions

Following the Governments health reforms in 1991 rationing has been put firmly on the agenda. This book identifies and clarifies the numerous political and ethical issues surrounding rationing in healthcare. Drawing upon international examples it offers a critical overview of the approaches to rationing and makes practical proposals for its management.Desperately Seeking Solutions challenges the assumption that all health services are inherently subject to rationing as demand invariably outstrips supply and examines this within a comparative framework. The author critically evaluates the extent to which rationing has always existed and should exist within the NHS, although until recently it operated on an implicit rather than explicit basis and was bound up with clinical judgements rather than purely financial considerations. The author questions whether calls for explicit rationing are actually desirable and potentially feasible.

Partnership Working in Public Health

The UK government’s reforms of the NHS and public health system require partnerships if they are to succeed. Those partnerships concerned with public health are especially important and are deemed to be a ’good thing’ which add, rather than consume, value. Yet the significant emphasis on partnership working to secure effective policy and service delivery exists despite the evidence testifying to how difficult it is to make partnerships work or achieve results. Partnership working in public health presents the findings from a detailed study of public health partnerships in England. The lessons from the research are used to explore the government’s changes in public health now being implemented, most of which centre on new partnerships called Health and Wellbeing Boards that have been established to work differently from their predecessors. The book assesses their likely impact and the implications for the future of public health partnerships. Drawing on systems thinking, it argues that partnerships can only succeed if they work in quite different ways. The book will therefore appeal to the public health community and students of health policy.

Health care systems everywhere face multiple pressures from changing demography, the rise of non-communicable disease, the growing demand on health services, and limited resources at a time of austerity. Focusing on the British NHS from a political science perspective, this second edition of this best-selling book offers a fresh look at how it is coping with such pressures. The book explores the complexity of health policy and health services, offering a critical perspective on concerns including integrated care, the return of public health to local government and moves to devolve health services to local level. Crucially, it offers a critique of the market-style changes introduced by the Coalition government between 2010 and 2015. Students of health care and health policy, policy-makers and public health and health care professionals will find this lively and accessible reassessment of NHS reforms invaluable.

Marriage and Sexuality in Early Christianity is part of Ad Fontes: Early Christian Sources, a series designed to present ancient Christian texts essential to an understanding of Christian theology, ecclesiology, and practice. The books in the series make the wealth of early Christian thought available to new generations of students of theology and provide a valuable resource for the church. Developed in light of recent patristic scholarship, the volumes provide a representative sampling of theological contributions from both East and West. The series provides volumes that are relevant for a variety of courses: from introduction to theology to classes on doctrine and the development of Christian thought. The goal of each volume is not to be exhaustive but rather to be representative enough to denote for a nonspecialist audience the multivalent character of early Christian thought, allowing readers to see how and why early Christian doctrine and practice developed the way it did.

On the last day of June 1924, the Reverend Orrin Van Loon, pastor of a community church in the small village of Berkley, Michigan, vanished from the face of the earth. Eleven days later, he turned up, exhausted, frail and fearing for his life on a street corner in a city over 100 miles from his home. Legend has it that he was abducted, tortured and "branded" by the Ku Klux Klan, leaving him with a horrible and disfiguring scar, circumstances of which the pastor can recall nothing But was this really that secret organization's retribution for the pastor having spoken out against them from his pulpit, or was there something even more sinister behind the disappearance of Van Loon? Various versions of the story have been passed down through generations of the town's residents, but now, through an exhaustive examination of the information surrounding the case, "BRANDED The Strange Disappearance of Reverend Van Loon" finally uncovers those facts, and its author proposes various scenarios and reveals popular theories in an attempt to find out what really happened during those mysterious 11 days and beyond, and who the actual perpetrator(s) may have been. Packed with over 4 dozen rare photographs, some of which have never before been published, and written from the unique perspective of a lifelong resident of the town in which the events occurred, this true story is filled with many amazing and unexpected twists and turns which are certain to keep the reader captivated
