David Nutt regularly hit the headlines as the UK's forthright Drugs Czar (Chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs), not least when fired by the Home Secretary in 2009 for his 'inconvenient' views. In Nutt Uncut he explains how he survived ill-judged political and media vilification to establish the respected charity Drug Science, with the aim of telling the truth about drugs. The book describes his life, distinguished career and scientific achievements, including his research into the human brain and the effects that both lawful and criminally illegal substances (including psychedelics) have on the brain and behaviour. It also catalogues with expert precision the risks of harm to drug users and others of a range of well-known drugs. Surveying the state of medical knowledge around various currently prohibited substances - from hard drugs to LSD, cannabis, ecstasy, magic mushrooms and poppers - Professor Nutt ranks their potential harms and benefits (e.g. in treating anxiety, depression or pain) leading him to challenge the distorted logic of a blanket ban on anything psychoactive except alcohol, tobacco and caffeine. Nutt Uncut contains far, far more about the usually hidden world of drugs, their use, abuse and role as a political bargaining counter - making it of interest not just to the many experts and others who already support the author's campaign for a frank, evidence-based approach to drugs but also anyone who wishes to learn about what he describes in Chapter 11 as 'policy madness.'
No Man's Land

No Man's Land

David Nash

Dedalus Press

No Man's Land is the highly assured debut collection of poems by Chile-based Irish poet David Nash, an exploration and a reclamation of a place at once familiar and strange - the rural landscape of the poet's formative years. Returning for the first time in over a decade, Nash re-immerses himself in a world of memory and language, folklore and custom, revealing a strikingly intimate connection with flora and fauna, land- and seascape. Yet all the while, his presence feels questioned, undeserved, his calling as both participant and observer under assault from the passage of time and the overwhelming threat of the present ecological moment. Inventive and playful, surprising and life-affirming, at its heart No Man's Land is nevertheless a book about loss -- the loss of language, knowledge, nature and wilderness that affects all of us in these troubling times.
Nevermore - A Novel of Love, Loss, & Edgar Allan Poe
Nevermore is a dark, historical fantasy filled with romance, southern charm, and all the trappings of a classic historical romance. Walking the line between the occult, the paranormal, and the reality of 1800s life in The Great Dismal Swamp, Nevermore is also chock full of action and adventure. Follow Edgar Allan Poe and Lenore into The Great Dismal Swamp and experience one version of the birth of Poe's famous poem, "The Raven." On the banks of Lake Drummond, on the edge of The Great Dismal Swamp, there is a tree in the shape of a woman. One dark, moonlit night, two artists met at The Lake Drummond Hotel, built directly on the borderline of North Carolina and Virginia. One was a young woman with the ability to see spirits trapped in trees and stone, anchored to the earth beyond their years. Her gift was to draw them, and then to set them free. The other was a dark man, haunted by dreams and visions that brought him stories of sadness and pain, and trapped in a life between the powers he sensed all around him, and a mundane existence attended by failure. They were Eleanore MacReady, Lenore, to her friends, and a young poet named Edgar Allan Poe, who traveled with a crow that was his secret, and almost constant companion, a bird named Grimm for the talented brothers of fairy-tale fame. Their meeting drew them together in vision, and legend, and pitted their strange powers and quick minds against the depths of the Dismal Swamp itself, ancient legends, and time. Once, upon a shoreline dreary, there was a tree. This is her story. AUTHOR'S NOTE: This novel is a direct spin-off from "Kali's Tale," the fourth book in the DeChance Chronicles - initially it was going to be the prologue to book V - but is now a fully separated, stand-alone work - though the stories tie together, and are all one big story - as novels, over time, tend to become. Book One, "Heart of a Dragon," is only .99 and books 2-4 are now available in a single omnibus edition. If you enjoy Nevermore, you may find The DeChance Chronicles to your liking. Book V - "A Midnight Dreary," draws directly on elements of Nevermore.
On Warriors' Wings: Army Vietnam War Helicopters and the Native Americans They Were Named to Honor
"The book is a wonderment of research with its 37 pages of notes and 29 pages of bibliography. Napoliello supports his secondary sources with interviews with Army aviators who flew in Vietnam and with current-day members of Native American tribes." -- The VVA VeteranOn Warriors' Wings traces the evolution of the Army policy to give names to major end items of equipment and specifically Native American tribal, warrior chiefs, and item to helicopters.Twelve Army helicopters saw combat in Vietnam, with eleven bearing Native American names. For each, David Napoliello's work includes an examination of what capabilities were needed, its performance requirements, and the production of the fleet. Napoliello continues with a discussion on how the aircraft was used during its entire period of service in-country as opposed to a twelve-month snapshot of the experiences of a single aviator or a specific aviation unit. The capstone of each chapter is the story of the Native American tribe or warrior chief and how that history commends it for the naming of that particular helicopter.David also devotes a chapter to the experiences and memories of Native American veterans who served as pilots or crew members of those eleven aircraft. These are insightful, first-person accounts of their tours of duty in Vietnam and duties in aviation units while stationed there.Over two hundred Native Americans perished in Vietnam, nineteen of whom died while participating in aerial operations. The details of that final mission and loss are included in here, along with a listing of the other fallen warriors. On Warriors' Wings concludes with a summary of the new Native American named helicopters that came after Vietnam and the progress the US military has made with regards to national recognition of Indigenous veterans. On Warriors' Wings includes extensive illustrations and archival images of Native American veterans.
