He can't help himself despite knowing he should stay away. The blackouts have started up again, resulting in a loss of clothes and a raw diet.Discovering he's a giant freaking cat isn't easy to accept, especially since his family's idea of sympathy is offering him a can of tuna and dangling a string. They won't laugh for long once they realize he can't control the beast.Only love can tame him.

Packed with the detailed local knowledge of author Paul Crask, a long-term resident, Bradt's Dominica remains the only up-to-date standalone guide to this Caribbean island. In this new, thoroughly updated fourth edition, a range of accommodation and dining options are described in depth, guide and tour-operator listings are extensive, and 19 detailed maps help orientation. Taking an environmentally conscious and socially responsible approach to travel, the author couples essential advice on activities and practicalities with rich insights into the country's natural environment, history and culture - including the Kalinago, the last of the region's indigenous Amerindian people, whose descendants continue to live here today. Formerly considered an undeveloped Caribbean backwater, English-speaking Dominica is an increasingly favoured tourist destination. The government has invested significantly in island infrastructure following damage caused by extreme weather events in 2015 and 2017, and upmarket boutique hotels are opening. Despite such rising popularity, Dominica remains a place of unbridled, off-the-beaten-path adventure and discovery. This island of mountains, unspoiled rainforests, volcanoes, rivers and waterfalls has much to enchant a variety of travellers. Explore Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a World Heritage Site housing a network of trails that traverse rainforest-covered mountains and connect rivers, waterfalls and the Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole that is the world's second-largest hot-water lake. Ardent hikers craving further exploration can walk sections of the Wai'tukubuli National Trail or make for national parks such as Cabrits and Morne Diablotin. Wildlife-watchers can seek out rare parrots found nowhere else on Earth, the mountain chicken (actually one of the world's largest frogs) or even a boa constrictor that is the subject of Kalinago legends. Scuba divers and snorkellers can marvel at pristine marine reserves boasting healthy coral reefs, while those who prefer to remain above the waves can take boat trips to enjoy excellent views of sperm whales. Whether you love nature or culture, hiking through wilderness or exploring underwater, the depth of detail and breadth of local insights that characterise Bradt's Dominica render it the indispensable practical companion to exploring this exciting country.
Culture Smart guides help travellers have a more meaningful and successful time abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. This is a guide to one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic, which has much more to offer than its idyllic beaches. The site of the first European settlement in the Americas, the country has a long and often turbulent history, marked by dictators, foreign invasions and popular uprisings. For almost two centuries the country has shared the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, a proximity which had led to friction and occasional conflict. Despite efforts to abandon dependency on sugar and to modernize the economy, the Dominican Republic still faces considerable poverty and social tensions. Migration, legal and illegal, provides a lifeline to many poor communities. Yet this often difficult past and present have created one of the most distinctive and vibrant cultures in the Caribbean, where 16th-century colonial architecture contrasts with modern office blocks, and where Spanish, African and American influences are apparent in music, food and art.

Much has been written over the years of the history of the Dominican Order, of its founder (St Dominic), its many saints and blesseds, key historical figures, different institutions, and its activities. St Dominic in founding the Order of Preachers left nothing written, and used the Rule written by another (St Augustine's) when founding his religious order. Within the Catholic world there are many spiritual and theological traditions that have a pace in the call to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. In the realm of spirituality there are a variety of schools following the life and writings of a number of people. The Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius are one such very well-known and followed example which has been the model for many religious institutes and organisations of spiritual renewal. The Dominican 'way' has always been a less structured and defined spirituality. It is to some extent illusive, hard to define or encapsulate in one word, one line or phrase however by looking at the tradition that has developed over the last 800 plus years one can discern certain threads, certain key elements, certain constants, that shape and define it to some degree. The motto of Veritas-truth-has been often quoted as the defining word, but as like all one word mottos needs explanation, defining, distilling to meet the an ever changing context of challenges and needs. The essays in this volume examine various aspects of Dominican life. There are essays on prayer, spirituality, as well as historical and biblical pieces as well as a piece on the work of publishing. The contributors come from different parts of the world and reflect different vocations within the Order. The overarching theme in the volume is that the Dominican tradition is one of dynamic engagement, a dynamic engagement with the world, with issues, ideas, concepts, topics, biblical studies, theology, philosophy, and history in whatever activity is undertaken. It is a process, never static but always searching and calling for new ideas, new expressions, new ways to look at, to respond to the situation/s in front of us, and also importantly to make some response to the needs of the time as they confront us. It is the following of an intuition, a thought an insight, to see where it leads, to look at the context/s, all the twists of possible interpretations, understandings and to come to certain decisions in how to frame this and talk about it.
To mark the long history of Dominican involvement in defence of human rights, in the year celebrating the 800th anniversary of the confirmation of the Order of Preachers, two hundred Dominican brothers, sisters and laity met in Salamanca, Spain, to discuss the contribution of the Dominican Order, in the past, present and future, in the promotion and defence of human rights. It was in that city in the sixteenth century that, prompted by his Dominican brothers, such as Bartolome de las Casas, who were defending the indigenous people of Latin America against the Spanish conquistadores, Francisco de Vitoria planted the seed of today's international human rights movement. This volume presents in original languages the eleven papers given in Salamanca as well as the statement adopted by the delegates at the end of the meeting. They combine historical views, theoretical insights and testimonies from life experience. This offers a rich contribution, not only towards strengthening the role of the Dominican Family, and even the universal church, in defending human rights, but also towards a deeper understanding of 'evangelisation' and 'mission'.

"Among the many exponents of the ideals of the Order of Saint Dominic, the fourteen canonized saints stand out pre-eminently. It is the purpose of this book to outline briefly the lives of these fourteen saints, and to indicate where further information regarding them may be obtained. The writers have drawn their material from scattered but authentic sources in the hope of showing how the spirit of Saint Dominic was, humanly speaking, the mainspring of the activities of these exponents, the guiding principle in the development of their characters, and the lodestar of their lives."Here are related the astonishing lives of fourteen saints of the Dominican Order, including St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Siena, Pope St. Pius V, St. Rose of Lima, St. Vincent Ferrer, and more. An encyclical on the Dominican Order by Pope Benedict XV and a list of all the Dominican Saints and Blesseds (as of 1921) complete this wonderful introduction to the "Dogs of the Lord."
