First published in Irish in 1937, this collection of journal and diary entries is a compelling first-hand account of Douglas Hyde's eight-month fundraising odyssey through the United States from 1905 to 1906. Published for the first time in a bilingual edition, complete with newly discovered archival material and extensive illustrations, this book navigates Hyde's thoughts on his journey in their original Irish, accompanied by a faithful English translation Hyde's work on this tour, undertaken on behalf of the Gaelic League, was both culturally and politically vital. The finance he raised contributed to the hiring and training of Irish-language teachers and organisers who travelled across Ireland spreading the Gaelic League message. These funds sustained the cultural revolution, which, in turn, gave rise to the political uprising from which Irish sovereignty would ultimately flow. This collection is beautifully designed and colour illustrated with a wide selection of original images and hand-written postcards. With an introduction by President Michael D. Higgins, and punctuated with entertaining pen pictures of prominent figures in US history (including President Theodore Roosevelt), this study recounts an important part in the life of one of Ireland's most under-appreciated leaders and captures an Ireland on the very brink of seismic change.
Douglas SBD Dauntless Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions
The Douglas SBD Dauntless served as the U.S. Navy's front line dive bomber from the outbreak of WWII thru 1943.The aircraft proved its mettle at the battles of Coral Sea and Midway, where its crews accounted for four Japanese carriers. The plane also saw action in support of the Marines at Guadalcanal. Their last combat stint was at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944.Originally printed by Douglas and the U.S. Navy during WWII, this SBD-6 flight operating handbook taught pilotseverything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Originally classified "Restricted", the manual wasdeclassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been slightly reformatted and some color images appear in black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.
Douglas TBD-1 Devastator Torpedo Bomber Pilot's Flight Manual
The first all-metal aircraft in the history of the U.S. Navy, the Douglas TBD-1 represented a radical advance when it debuted in 1937. Yet by December 7, 1941, the Devastator was obsolete. Despite this TBD-1s performed well at Coral Sea, helping sink the Japanese carrier Shoho. Just three months later at Midway however, Devastator pilots were forced to make their attack runs without fighter escort. Only four planes out of 41 survived. Yet it was not a sacrifice made in vain. The TBD-1s left Japanese fighter patrols in disarray, paving the way for a nearly unopposed attack by Dauntless dive bombers that resulted in the loss of three Japanese aircraft carriers. Originally printed by Douglas and the U.S. Navy, this manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "Restricted", the manual was declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.

In this second volume of the Douglas H. Ginsburg Liber Amicorum, the reader will find a series of essays no less brilliant than those in the first. Emphasis is, rightly, placed on Judge Ginsburg's contribution to the structured analysis of antitrust problems, whether in terms of the rule of reason, the shifting burden of proof, or the assessment of potentially anticompetitive mergers. The volume carries articles by distinguished contributors on some of the most important and topical questions in modern antitrust, and in doing so salutes the outstanding career of Judge Ginsburg, and adds significantly to the scholarship with which his name is already synonymous.

Tashiding: Beyond Earth and Sky the Gardens of Douglas & Tsognie Hamilton
Tashiding: Between Earth and Sky presents a sumptuous portrait of a 100-acre rural landscape and stunning residence developed in connection with the land and the environment.Visited by up to 500 guests annually, this number promises to increase with additional garden club registrations and publicity. Stunning photographs and the book's elegant design take readers on an exquisite visual tour of the property and its development, including the origins and culture of its owners--Douglas Hamilton former president and chairman of The Walters Museum in Maryland and Tsognie Wangmo, the eldest child of the last king of Sikkim, shortly before the Himalayan royal kingdom was taken over by India.Tashiding showcases the joining of two distinct cultures, and how their Western and Eastern backgrounds are manifest in the landscapes, garden themes, sculpture, ornament, and the house's interiors. Everyone who has visited Tashiding is moved by the experiential sensation of the landscape's different places. In developing Tashiding's four-seasons gardens, Douglas and Tsognie envisioned an environment that invites a sense of harmony and well-being--part arboretum, part park, and part Xanadu. It is a garden for both walking and quiet contemplation, for feeling the thrill of the wind on a cool March day or for sitting in the teahouse on a rainy afternoon, watching the wind form abstract ripples on the surface of the lake. Collecting and arranging the extraordinary quantity of rocks, boulders, trees and shrubs, they see their hands in all they did. Yet as the years have passed, each tree and plant grows in its own unique way, knitting together to form and new and perhaps more naturalistic landscape.

Dr. Goral, a gifted storyteller, began telling the Douglas stories to her grandchildren and then to school-aged children around the country. The love and interest children showed when hearing the true stories about her crazy dog prompted Dr. Goral to begin putting the stories in print. Similar to the surprise humor in Eric Litwin's and James Dean's "Pete the Cat" books and filled with beautiful watercolor illustrations reminiscent of the paintings in Alexandra Day's "Good Dog Carl" books, Dr. Goral's first Douglas story is sure to delight and entertain readers of all ages. Funny and full of surprises, Douglas will win the hearts of all who hear his story.

Explore the rich history of Canada's largest ranch. Douglas Lake is the largest ranch in Canada, encompassing over one million acres of BC's south-central interior, and thousands of people have worked there since it was founded in the mid 1880s. Douglas Lake now includes BC's first cattle ranch, Alkali Lake Ranch, as well as Circle S Ranch, Quilchena Ranch, Riske Creek Ranching and the infamous Gang Ranch. It has had a succession of wealthy owners including Charles "Chunky" Woodward of Woodward's Stores and current owner, US real estate and sports mogul Stan Kroenke. It has recreational facilities and is known for hosting celebrity guests like Prince Philip, billionaire media mogul Malcolm Forbes and others but, as this book shows, it is a serious working cattle ranch. Having grown up on a BC ranch, author Donna Yoshitake Wuest brings an insider's understanding to the subject. Working closely with the ranch's long-time manager, Joe Gardner, she provides a detailed history from its founding by John Douglas 140 years ago, through innovations in quarter horse breeding and deer farming to helicopter cowboying. Together, Wuest and Gardner provide a fascinating account of the day-to-day operations of a large modern ranch as it faces the challenges of running an integrated cattle, forestry and recreational business. The book is rich with stories about the ranch's wealthy owners, celebrity guests and hard-working cowhands.
