The E. M. Forster's book ''Where Angels Fear to Tread'' was published in 1905. The phrase "For fool's rush in where angels fear to tread" appears in Alexander Pope's essay on criticism, which serves as the source of the title. In 1966, the BBC produced a play of the month based on the book for television. Charles Sturridge turned it into a movie in 1991, with Rupert Graves, Giovanni Guidelli, Helen Mirren, Helena Bonham Carter, and Judy Davis in the lead roles. BBC Radio 4 aired a ten-part radio dramatization of the book. The Peabody Institute of Music hosted the world premiere of a Mark Weiser opera in 1999, while Opera San Jose had the opera's professional premiere in 2015. Her in-laws are not amused when the young English widow Lilia Herriton embarks on a world tour and weds an impoverished Italian while there. It is only natural that the marriage would break down and poor Lilia would pass very tragically. But Philip Harriton, his gloomy sister Harriet, and their well-intentioned acquaintance Miss Abbott must act quickly to correct Lilia's untimely pregnancy and the baby's upbringing as an Italian. The story's action starts at a train station, where Lilia Herriton is bidding farewell before leaving for an Italian vacation.

We rich can''Only connect.' is the idea at the heart of this book, a heartbreaking and provocative tale of three families at the beginning of the twentieth century: the rich Wilcoxes, the gentle, idealistic Schlegels and the lower-middle class Basts. As the Schlegel sisters try desperately to help the Basts and educate the close-minded Wilcoxes, the families are drawn together in love, lies and death. Frequently cited as E. M. Forster's finest work, Howards End brilliantly explores class warfare, conflict and the English character. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the very first novels to the beginning of the First World War.
P. N. Furbank's 1978 two-volume portrait, combined here into one edition, is generally considered the definitive biography of novelist E. M. Forster. "One of the best biographies of a writer I've ever read."--Walter Clemons, Newsweek

This volume of interviews and recollections offers a kaleidoscopic view of E.M. Forster's character as observed and remembered by college associates, close friends, chance acquaintances and fellow writers. These forty-six pieces, some published here for the first time, variously reveal facets of his private and public personalities: Forster the subtle analyst of middle-class England, the spokesman for liberal causes and humane values, the Cambridge insider and the committed friend.
Forster's literary career is assessed in relation to works that mark its phases: his suburban novels, the Indian novel, the BBC talks, and first and last, his short fiction. This study traces evidences of his keen awareness of political and social undercurrents as discovered in the works: the importance of personal relations, culture as a precious heritage, and the creative artist as definer of cultural values and encourager of those who should preserve them.
