The Freedom of Lights: Edmond Jabès and Jewish Philosophy of Modernity

Edmond Jabès was one of the most intriguing Jewish thinkers of the 20th century – a poet for the public and a Kabbalist for those who read his work more closely. This book turns his writings into a ground-breaking philosophical achievement: thinking which is manifestly indebted to the Kabbalah, but in the post-religious and post-Shoah world. Loss, exile, negativity, God’s absence, writing and Jewishness are the main signposts of the negative ontology which this book offers as an interpretation of Jabès’ work. On the basis of it, the book examines the nature of the miraculous encounter between Judaism and philosophy which occurred in the 20th century. Modern Jewish philosophy is a re-constructed tradition which adapts the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Judaism to answer purely modern questions.

The Canadian Adventures of Angus and Edmond Gunna Dickson and Judi Bradford www.amazon.com / www.ingramspark.comIn their sixth adventure, NYC-based adopted Angora-mix brothers Angus and Edmond take off for a quick visit to their neighbor to the North - and land in another world. The hospitality of scenic pre-Christmas Montreal, the most European city in North America, warms them as they visit the majestic 17th Century Notre Dame Basilica and go skating in the shadow of La Grande Roue in the historic Old Port. The dynamic duo succumbs to the wintry wonderland charms of snow-clad Quebec City, where making memories is easy on a leisurely cal che ride and thrilling toboggan run on the banks of the ice-clogged St. Lawrence River. They eat poutine and maple sugar treats, frolic on the Plains of Abraham and look ahead to Carnival festivities. Angus is in his element in the French-speaking province of Quebec and Edmond finds his voice in a most unusual way. The brothers even contemplate a career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The True Story of Vanilla: How Edmond Albius Made History

★ "Moving and bittersweet...Discusses the reality of slavery and the racial violence and prejudice formerly enslaved individuals experienced." -- Booklist, starred review In 1841, a 12-year-old enslaved boy, Edmond Albius, made history when he discovered how to hand-pollinate vanilla plants using a bamboo twig. Until that time, only bees in Mexico could pollinate the plant--botanists couldn't figure out another way. With his master, Edmond travelled around R union Island to share his technique, le geste d'Edmonde (Edmond's gesture), which is still in use today. Despite his important achievement, as an enslaved person Edmond didn't receive payment or recognition for his contribution to science, eventually dying in poverty after being freed from slavery in 1848. Today it is recognized that Edmond's method of pollination was key to bringing vanilla to the world, helped to create a billion-dollar industry and gave us the flavor we love to use in cooking, baking, medicine and, of course, ice cream. The epub edition of this title is fully accessible.

This catalogue is the first and only full codicological description of these manuscripts.
Selected Poetry and Prose of Edmond Holmes

This book represents the first scholarly gathering together of the long-neglected poetry of the School Inspector, educationalist and philosopher Edmond Holmes (1850 – 1936). Alongside a generous selection from Holmes’s six volumes of poetry there is also a full reproduction of Holmes’s essay What is Poetry which served to delineate his thinking on the discipline. Supporting these original works is both a lengthy scholarly introduction and extensive endnotes which serve to locate Holmes’s poetry not merely within the context of its time and amongst his own contemporaries but also to make a case for the importance of this body of work in its own right particularly in its promulgation of original and innovative ideas. Holmes’s poetry represents a particularly unique combination of traditional verse form coupled with innovative and esoteric subject matter (often drawing upon Eastern Buddhist philosophy as well as Western Romanticism and Pantheism) and so deserves to be more widely recognized as being wholly distinctive within the canon of Victorian and Modern poetry.
Back again for another adventure are Angus and Edmond, the dynamic feline duo created by author Gunna Dickson. Readers have seen these two curious cats find themselves in a myriad predicaments in their travels through Scotland, Key West, Italy, Spain and beyond. This year, the Angora mix littermates have landed in Budapest, where they are introduced to the Hungarian way of life and distinct culture., As is the norm with these two, however, trouble is not far away, and things take a surprising turn during a daytrip to Vienna. Illustrated by Suellen Crowley Weaver.
