"At Home" With Rock Hudson: Behind The Walls Of His Life Un-corrected Proof: With a Special Tribute To Elizabeth Taylor
UN-CORRECTED PROOF * IMAGINE* You have a really close friend, one you see everyday, one with whom you have exchanged confidences and shared experiences, and had so many fun times together. Imagine the worst possible disease, and then think how you would feel if you found out your friend had it. Imagine watching your buddy as he fought such a horrible disease, seeing him succumb to that disease---a person you love, a friend who has been such an important part of your life. Now imagine(although some may find this part nearly impossible) almost every person you come upon as having nothing but derogatory remarks about your best friend's behavior, about the way he died, about the way he was. Your friend, you knew, was an extremely nice guy. A kind man, a generous employer, a loving person. Oh...did I mention this friend was well-known, a once very famous and beloved Superstar? Yet, because of the...circumstances surrounding his death, the discrimination because he was gay, and the atrociousness of the out and out lies by his accuser, such an inaccurate portrait was painted of your friend that you hardly recognized him as the fine man you knew. In fact, twenty-five years after his demise, your friend is still chiefly remembered because he had AIDS. Not that he was a talented actor who entertained millions of people. Not for the all-around nice man he was. The unfairness of it all What would you do? I wrote this book. My name is Martin Flaherty, and I have just completed the first in what I hope to be a series of books entitled, "At Home" with Rock Hudson: Behind the Walls of His Life. Yes, my friend was Rock Hudson; I worked for him for a decade and played with him and I knew him perhaps better than anybody, those last ten years of his life. We had so many outrageously fun times together; Rock had such a great sense of humor, and I have many of the anecdotes he personally related to me from his life and his career. For those not familiar with the life of this star who shaped the way the world saw AIDS, maybe it is time to learn. I also have countless...shall we say...unusual stories from my experiences at his house, the typical days spent with the less than typical characters within Rock Hudson's "Castle". Yes, he called his home the "Castle", and he was a king of a man and I want the world to finally know him as I did, to remember him with love and the respect he deserved from a life spent devoted to his fans.

Excavations carried out prior to the construction of a new fire station in Guildford, Surrey, revealed a well preserved, in situ Late Upper Palaeolithic flint scatter. The site lay on cold climate fluvial sandy gravels deposited in braided stream systems prior to the onset of the Late Glacial (Windermere) interstadial. Typological analysis of the flint and OSL dates suggest that the scatter itself dates from the first half of the Late Glacial (Windermere) interstadial (c 1415KBP). The lithic assemblage is homogeneous and, apart from initial extraction and nodule testing, all stages of flint manufacture are represented. Two main concentrations of knapping are represented, the main focus of which were the production of blade blanks some of which were removed from the site. Functional analysis of the tools suggests relatively short occupation during which hunting, smallscale craft activities linked with the retooling of hunting weapons and the manufacture of hide items, and limited processing of animal and plant materials took place. The assemblage is comparable to that from Wey Manor Farm, Surrey, 17km further downstream, and raises the question of the relationship between the two sites. Both share technological and typological features in common with the Creswellian, though Wey Manor Farm has a greater diversity in lithic point types. Comparison with Continental assemblages suggests that the Surrey sites share affinities with the Older Azilian or equivalents in northwest France and Germany and implies strong postMagdalenian influences in the Late Upper Palaeolithic of Britain.

In Ink, Stink Bait, Revenge, and Queen Elizabeth, Steven W. May and Arthur F. Marotti present a recently discovered "household book" from sixteenth-century England. Its main scribe, John Hanson, was a yeoman who worked as a legal agent in rural Yorkshire. His book, a miscellaneous collection of documents that he found useful or interesting, is a rare example of a middle-class provincial anthology that contains, in addition to works from the country's cultural center, items of local interest seldom or never disseminated nationally. Among the literary highlights of the household book are unique copies of two ballads, whose original print versions have been lost, describing Queen Elizabeth's procession through London after the victory over the Spanish Armada; two poems attributed to Elizabeth herself; and other verse by courtly writers copied from manuscript and print sources. Of local interest is the earliest-known copy of a 126-stanza ballad about a mid-fourteenth-century West Yorkshire feud between the Eland and Beaumont families. The manuscript's utilitarian items include a verse calendar and poetic Decalogue, model legal documents, real estate records, recipes for inks and fish baits, and instructions for catching rabbits and birds. Hanson combined both professional and recreational interests in his manuscript, including material related to his legal work with wills and real estate transactions. As May and Marotti argue in their cultural and historical interpretation of the text, Hanson's household book is especially valuable not only for the unusual texts it preserves but also for the ways in which it demonstrates the intersection of the local and national and of popular and elite cultures in early modern England.

Ideal for students and both beginning and practicing catalogers in public, school, and academic libraries, this updated workbook offers targeted, hands-on exercises that enhance understanding of description, classification, subject analysis, subject heading application, and MARC 21 subject analysis.Like the first edition, this updated workbook has a straightforward goal: to help expand and improve the effectiveness of library catalogs. It is designed to supplement existing textbooks by providing exercises in AACR2r and RDA description, classification, subject analysis, and MARC protocols. Particular attention is given to problems that may arise when cataloging books as well as multimedia combinations, 3-D items, toys, natural objects, maps, printed and performed music, bilingual materials, and electronic files. Through the exercises, you will better understand the overall process of cataloging an item and making a record, the application of RDA in producing records, the steps for cataloging new media, and the differences in records using RDA or AACR2r.To enhance the exercises, the workbook incorporates photographs of real materials and offers questions for consideration. There is also a companion website with enlargeable color graphics. The site provides complete answer records and additional indexes for instructors to use in selecting examples for specific elements in the record. For students, new or advanced, selected MARC answer records are included, as are special lists, forms, and indexes leading to the tools any cataloger will need.Student ResourcesExercisesThe images from the exercises in the book are included in this section in a larger format for closer examination.
