This book explores the significant increase in non-marital births in the United States, the possible reasons behind the change, and things that can be done to control it. In 2006, a record 38.5% of all United States births were non-marital births. Many of these children grow up in mother-only families. Although most children who grow up in mother-only families or step-parent families become well-adjusted, productive adults, the bulk of empirical research indicates that children who grow up with only one biological parent in the home are more likely to be financially worse off and have worse socio-economic outcomes (even after income differences are taken into account) compared to children who grow up with both biological parents in the home. This book analyses the trends in non-marital childbearing, discusses some of the characteristics of unwed mothers, addresses some issues involving the fathers of children born outside of marriage, covers many of the reasons for non-marital childbearing, examines the impact of non-marital births on families and on the nation, and presents the public policy interventions that have been used to prevent non-marital births or ameliorate some of the negative financial consequences that are sometimes associated with non-marital child-bearing. This is an edited, excerpted and augmented edition of a NVSR publication.

As a result, Chicana/o/x students maintain stubbornly low four-year completion rates. Against this backdrop, Gilberto Q. Conchas and Nancy Acevedo address the mechanisms that shape the achievement, aspirations, and expectations of Chicana/o/x students who grew up in marginalized communities and unequal school contexts and share success stories about this growing population of students. Conchas and Acevedo elevate the voices of students at a research university and in the community college sector to reveal important issues and factors impacting and shaping the students' academic journeys. The college-age men and women in the narratives evince hope, resistance, and empowerment in the face of marginalization, anti-immigration sentiment, poverty, and an education system that too often reinforces deficit-minded stereotypes. No s lo explica paso a paso c mo se construye un cuento o una novela, sino que va tras una caracterizaci n de la literatura infantil, la necesidad de una cr tica especializada y una definici n de literatura para ni os. Se trata de una visi n particular de la literatura infantil en su interior e intimidad que podr a ser de utilidad para quien estudia o para quien escribe o simplemente para quien desea aclarar o confrontar sus propias ideas con el punto de vista de otros autores.La cuesti n del subt tulo tiene la idea de decir que escribir para ni os est en chino porque en efecto parece algo tan sencillo que cualquiera se atreve a hacer, pero pocos escritores logran que sus textos alcancen la categor a de verdadera literatura infantil, por lo menos como se define en estas p ginas: como una obra art stica. Las claves para alcanzar esa categor a se estudian, se discuten y se presentan aqu . Por ejemplo, se analiza el proceso inconsciente de la creaci n art stica, se revisan las teor as de la recepci n lectora, se hacen precisiones sobre el m todo art stico y se ejemplifican muchos t picos con la obra de distinguidos autores. Escribir para ni os?, hace una defensa ardiente del oficio del escritor de literatura infantil ante el menosprecio antediluviano de la intelectualidad latinoamericana, la cual no tiene estatura para poder valorarla, negando por ejemplo la existencia de literatura con el precioso adjetivo infantil. De aqu la importancia de establecer, como lo hace Rend n, que la Literatura Infantil es la experiencia creadora concentrada de numerosos escritores de diversas pocas que con sus obras dan cuerpo y sustancia, con su sola existencia, a la literatura dedicada a los ni os. Se la puede tratar como un g nero o mejor como un g nero de g neros, o una categor a especial, nunca m s ignorar. Un libro para releer, pensar y motivarse a escribir.
