Helen and Arthur; or, Miss Thusa's Spinning Wheel (Esprios Classics)
Caroline Lee Whiting Hentz (June 1, 1800, Lancaster, Massachusetts - February 11, 1856, Marianna, Florida) was an American novelist and author, most noted for her opposition to the abolitionist movement and her widely read The Planter's Northern Bride, a rebuttal to Harriet Beecher Stowe's popular anti-slavery book, Uncle Tom's Cabin. She was a major literary figure in her day, and helped advance women's fiction. Although she was primarily a teacher from the beginning, Hentz still managed to write and produce several small pieces and distribute them to local publications. In 1831, Hentz wrote De Lara; or, The Moorish Bride for Boston actor William Pelby. The tragedy won Hentz recognition in 1842 when it was performed at the Arch Street Theatre in Philadelphia and the Tremont in Boston.

Despite being hailed as 'the foremost woman of her time' in the 1880s, Helen Taylor's legacy has largely been overshadowed, often reduced to her role as John Stuart Mill's stepdaughter and a divisive figure within the Victorian women's suffrage movement. However, this biography seeks to rediscover the complex woman behind the often-deserved label of 'difficult to work with,' exploring the politics and convictions that made her both admired and reviled. As the daughter of philosopher Harriet Taylor and stepdaughter of Mill, Helen emerged from their shadows to become a powerful public figure, fighting for women’s rights, education reform, land nationalization, socialism, and Irish Home Rule. In 1885, she became the first woman to run as a parliamentary candidate, representing Camberwell Radical Club. However, by the late 1880s, poor health forced her withdrawal from public life, and her contributions faded into obscurity. Helen’s vital role in shaping progressive movements was lamented even in her time, with reformers like Frances Soutter lamenting her erasure from history. Helen Taylor and her Fight for the People reclaims Helen's rightful place as a pioneering force in the fight for democracy and gender equality in the Victorian era.

Middle-aged, middling academic Helen Bonaparte has left her husband and children at home for a week-long Italian group tour with strangers. Happy with her home life, but needing self-renewal, she intends to sulk in the corners of buses and museums for a week, indulging in great art but scowling the rest of the world away. Until, that is, she meets Marieke, the tour guide, who becomes the object of erotic fantasies Helen didn't even know she had. As each day passes, Helen's home life recedes, only to be replaced with increasingly bizarre, invasive, and always secretive ways to get closer to Marieke. As she meanders around tourist gems of Renaissance Italy, Helen must come to terms with her new obsession, existing just on the border of dream and disillusionment, the imaginative and the mundane, the sacred and the profane.
