Administrators must respond to parents, students, and stakeholders in the wake of a school crisis in order to inform them, allay fears, and to counteract rumors. Most often, school superintendents, principals, deans, and school security officers seek a concise reference for help in writing messages when a crisis occurs. This book, which includes completed models and sample letter responses, addresses daily issues ranging from bullying to student dropout rates and it offers more than thirty completed documents to work with, to adapt to, and to utilize. Using or reworking the examples provided here will meet the leader's immediate need for appropriate, well-written, and timely communication. For all educational leaders.

This book offers readers twenty crisis case studies from the inside of school buildings. The author-a licensed administrator and former teacher-presents salient situations and incidents that, unfortunately, are almost common occurrences. These might include disaffected pupils; intruder(s) in a building; a school's potentially negative atmosphere; skills learning vs. project learning; and girls fighting. All cases are realistic, timely, and thought-provoking, supplemented with a series of discussion questions for a school staff or safety group or a university student enrolled in an administrative course of study. Rather than a theoretical approach or one based on scientific investigation or a specific model, the author describes events and circumstances that are present and problematic in many schools here and abroad. Becoming familiar with potential solutions is as important as pinpointing available sources in one's own school district. School Crisis Case Studies provides readers with the opportunity to anticipate specific crisis situations and suggests responses, using the security measures and personnel available in the schools they are familiar with.

After attaining approval from the governor to form a city on April 21, 1821, Gainesville, Georgia, transformed into a commercial and resort area that soon attracted a street railway. When its line was expanded in 1877, Green Street eventually became one of the most desirable places to raise a family. Even after a fire nearly destroyed the town in 1851, its determined residents persevered. In 1975, the Green Street homes were placed in the Green Street Historic District and on the National Registry. Within a fascinating presentation, Helen Martin looks beyond the jewels and grandeur to capture the past and offer a glimpse into the versatile architectural designs of North Green Street. Some of the homes described include the Martin-Matthews-Norton house built at (58) 393 Green Street between 1910 and 1911; the Wallace House at 417 Green Street, constructed at around 1900; and the Nalley Martin house, one of the last homes erected in 1938. Included are historical photographs and additional details regarding the twenty-five homes that fell in the name of progress. Beyond the Jewels and Grandeur shares the architectural history of a beloved street in Gainesville, Georgia, as its homes and residents endured changes through both simple and challenging times.

Early life on small farms taught the author to value solving problems. From her college-educated parents she learned to value education.Discovering and helping then became central to her teaching experiences. She has taught writing, reading, creative writing, drama, and orchestra to junior high school, high school, and community college students. She has taught private string lessons to students from the age of 1 1/2 to 85. She develops yearly string concerts with varying themes such as " In Dreams," "Mostly Movies," and "Of Wings and Strings." Teaching community college students who were studying the "trades," Helen came to understand that, like them, she is a maker-a "poem maker." Erasing backward I disappear inside memory- fall and spill and splinter into broken bits-no gathered meaning. I do not want to think of now-these later times when I see only things I cannot do. Sometimes remembering is not enough. Then I hate you-child- that you do not hold me dear to climb from bed-past fear-past my meager living here. I want to stay-lay myself along the wind that holds up branches. Rest on the sunset clouds-their long bright ribbons singing the sky alive. I want to rise up as tall and straight as great trees. Search upward- looking past the sky. excerpt from Lament for the Leaving

This book provides new answers to who and psychologically why individuals sometimes adopt conspiracy beliefs and thoughts of violence. Five conspiracy beliefs are considered: Government Malfeasance, Malevolent World Power, Extra-terrestrial Cover-up, Personal Well-being Threat, and Control of Information. Using a survey of 977 US citizens, the book compares thirteen possible demographic characteristics (who?) to see which ones are most associated with extreme beliefs. The book then evaluates a three-step psychological sequence (why?) in which individuals experiencing intense life stressors (health, money, or loneliness), combined with powerlessness (displayed as PTSD symptoms), have increased risk for extreme beliefs, perhaps because they offer a sense of understanding, strength, and community.
