When Chris McCandless, immortalized in Into the Wild, headed into the Alaska wilderness, one of the books he took with him was Tanaina Plantlore, which he used to identify edible plants. While the book and subsequent movie has brought attention to the book for more than a decade, it draws on a thousand of years of knowledge. The Dena'ina (also called the Tanaina) Athabascan peoples in southcentral Alaska have made use of the varied plant life that grows in interior Alaska for generations and Tanaina Plantlore collects this extensve knowledge, giving phsycial and environmental descriptions with photographs to aid in identification. This book is the culmination of more than a decade of ethnobotanical study and provides accounts of the traditional lore associated with these plants based on a wealth of interviews with Dena'ina people. This new edition includes new graphical content consolidating practical plant information and traditional uses.

Parents: This is a very short educational book (approx. 25 pages) that teaches children about bees. It also shows them how to overcome anything they're scared of. It does that through the story of Lima and Ina, two sisters aged six and ten. Ten-year-old Ina is terrified of bees, and as a result, she wants to rid the world of them. When she gets stung by a bee, her fear worsens, and she runs and hides from her fear. But through gentle coaxing and education by her parents who expose her to books, articles, and a visit to the museum of science, she is able to learn more about bees. She understands how beneficial they are to humanity and this changes her whole outlook. The book not only illustrates how education can help to conquer a fear of bees but can be a template for any phobia. It encourages readers to address their anxieties by reading more, asking questions, and spending time learning about what they're afraid of. This short story is designed to be finished in one sitting, and the target audience is girls aged 8 to 12. For younger kids, parents can read the book aloud to them as a bedtime story. The book has no pictures (it is text-only) and takes around 20 to 30 minutes to finish.

This is an educational book for children that teaches them about the importance of listening to their parents. It does that through the story of Lima and Ina, two sisters aged six and ten. The sisters love going to the beach, and they love to build and decorate sandcastles with seashells. They have read about the rare Junonia shell and want to get their hands on one. On their various trips to the beach, they search for one but don't find it. Until one day their friend Scarlett suggests going to a forbidden cove to look for the shell. Rebellious Lima is all for it, but obedient Ina doesn't want to go. They end up going because Ina doesn't want to miss out on an adventure with her sister and her friend. But when they get to the cove, they find a lot more than they bargained for. So now they have to deal with the consequences of disobedience and learn a new lesson about how important it is to listen to their parents. The book also highlights the different types of seashells that Lima and Ina come across, including Conch shells, Murex shells, and Ceriths. This encourages kids to want to learn more about seashells by looking up their different shapes and sizes.

In Photographing Ina, Philip Trager (born 1935), renowned for his black-and-white images, embraces color for the first time. His images are as much about the act of photographing, perception, color and light, as they are about his subject, his wife Ina, whose presence is a constant and unifying motif.Trager photographed his wife on only two occasions. This book comprises images from these contrasting bodies of work: black-and-white photographs made after 25 years lived together; and color photographs made between 2006 and 2011, after 50 years together. These intimate, openly theatrical images, made in concentrated sessions rather than as an ongoing diary, embody an enduring love and shared passion for art. This clothbound volume offers a new perspective on one of America's most renowned photographers.

War Paintings of the Tsuu T'ina Nation

War Paintings of the Tsuu T'ina Nation

During much of the nineteenth century, paintings functioned as the Plains Indians' equivalent to written records. The majority of their paintings documented warfare, focusing on specific war deeds. These pictorial narratives—appearing on hide robes, war shirts, tipi liners, and tipi covers—were maintained by the several dozen Plains Indians tribes, and they continue to expand historical knowledge of a people and place in transition.War Paintings of the Tsuu T'ina Nation is a study of several important war paintings and artifact collections of the Tsuu T'ina (Sarcee) that provides insight into the changing relations between the Tsuu T'ina, other plains tribes, and non-Native communities during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Arni Brownstone has meticulously created renderings of the paintings that invite readers to explore them more fully. All known Tsuu T'ina paintings are considered in the study, as are several important collections of Tsuu T'ina artifacts, with particular emphasis on five key works. Brownstone's analysis furthers our understanding of Tsuu T'ina pictographic war paintings in relation to the social, historical, and artistic forces that influenced them and provides a broader understanding of pictographic painting, one of the richest and most important Native American artistic and literary genres.
