Mary Ann Reilly; Jane M. Gangi; Rob Cohen

Information Age Publishing
2010
nidottu
In an increasingly global learning environment, teachers are challenged to meet a myriad of student needs-provide basic literacy and mathematics skills, improve scientific and technological thinking, increase bilingual and multi-lingual competencies. Reilly and Gangi provide a new vision of what it means to be literate and, more important, what it means to be a global citizen. This volume represents a wonderful move away from schooling and toward education. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Kellner Family Chair in Urban Education, University of Wisconsin-Madison Mary Ann Reilly and Jane M. Gangi's book, Deepening Literacy Learning: Art and Literature Engagements in K-8 Classrooms, is a wonderful blending of methodologies. This juxtaposition of art and literature serves as an instrument for teachers to inspire their students to create, critique, compare and predict, all higher-level intellectual behaviors, while composing across symbol systems. The work contains detailed classroom transcripts of strategies that lend themselves to culturally responsive teaching while engaging students and developing in them the desire to learn.

The inspiring story of worker centers that are cropping up across the country and leading the fight for today's workers For over 60 million people, work in America has been a story of declining wages, insecurity, and unsafe conditions, especially amid the coronavirus epidemic. This new and troubling reality has galvanized media and policymakers, but all the while a different and little-known story of rebirth and struggle has percolated just below the surface. On the Job is the first account of a new kind of labor movement, one that is happening locally, quietly, and among our country's most vulnerable—but essential—workers. Noted public health expert Celeste Monforton and award-winning journalist Jane M. Von Bergen crisscrossed the country, speaking with workers of all backgrounds and uncovering the stories of hundreds of new, worker-led organizations (often simply called worker centers) that have successfully achieved higher wages, safer working conditions and on-the-job dignity for their members. On the Job describes ordinary people finding their voice and challenging power: from housekeepers in Chicago and Houston; to poultry workers in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Springdale, Arkansas; and construction workers across the state of Texas. An inspiring book for dark times, On the Job reveals that labor activism is actually alive and growing—and holds the key to a different future for all working people.

This manuscript provides a blueprint for people conducting focus groups. The examples are highly useful and in combination with the book give people the information they need to actually run a focus group. . . . Chapter nine is uniquely useful for educators who frequently work with children and teachers in school settings. The concrete examples will be extremely helpful to focus group moderators. . . . The book will be useful for reference and for courses in survey research. I will recommend the book for both purposes. --Kathy Green, University of Denver "This book does a nice job of providing readers with the specific steps necessary to conduct focus groups. If a person had never heard of a 'focus group interview' before reading this book, they would have an excellent comprehension of the history, specific methods, and pitfalls of using the focus group interview methodology." --Thomas M. Archer, The Ohio State University Why use focus groups in educational and psychological research? The focus group interview is a research tool that holds great promise for application in educational and psychological research. Focus groups offer an effective way to obtain knowledge about what key stakeholders think and feel resulting in information that yields better surveys, evaluations, and research studies. Although there are numerous books and articles that address focus groups, most are directed at business and marketing. Focus Group Interviews in Education and Psychology shows the specific steps to take to conduct focus groups in educational and psychological settings. Through the use of numerous examples, the authors show readers how to prepare for a focus group, create a moderator's guide, select a setting, and analyze the results gleaned from focus groups. In addition, they devote an entire chapter to doing focus groups with adolescents and children. Each chapter contains numerous procedural tables as well as end-of-chapter applications for performing "trial runs" of the techniques discussed. Qualitative and quantitative researchers and students in education and psychology will find this book a useful guide for refining their research instruments and for opening new vistas to understanding their subjects' responses. Focus Group Interviews in Education and Psychology is an invaluable tool that is beneficial to researchers and professionals in research methods/evaluation, psychology, education, and social work.

BORB provides a set of standardised procedures for assessing neuropsychological disorders of visual object recognition, based on tests developed in the cognitive neuropsychological literature. The tests are introduced in terms of cognitive neuropsychological analyses of object recognition, and guidance is given concerning test use and interpretation. The tests assess low-level aspects of visual perception (using same-different matching of basic perceptual features, such as orientation, length, position and object size), intermediate visual processes (e.g., matching objects different in viewpoint), access to stored perceptual knowledge about objects (object decision), access to semantic knowledge (function and associative matches) and access to names from object (picture naming). BORB will serve as an invaluable companion test battery to the PALPA test of language ability.
Eliciting and Analyzing Expert Judgment

Eliciting and Analyzing Expert Judgment

Expert judgment is invaluable for assessing products, systems, and situations for which measurements or test results are sparse or nonexistent. This book takes the reader step by step through the techniques of eliciting and analyzing expert judgment, with special attention given to helping the reader develop elicitation methods and tools adaptable to a variety of unique situations and work areas. The analysis procedures presented in the book may require a basic understanding of statistics and probabilities, but the authors have provided detailed explanations of the techniques used and have taken special care to define all statistical jargon. Originally published in 1991, this book is designed so that those familiar with the use of expert judgment can quickly find the material appropriate for their advanced background. Newcomers will be eased into the topic by special chapters explaining what expert judgment is and how it can be used, an introduction to statistical techniques and notation, definitions for statistical terms, and a separate glossary of expert judgment terms.People in industry, government, and academia are aware that they must capture their expertise, as well as access and update it in electronic repositories (knowledge systems), if they are to preserve their chief assets and competitive edge. This book provides a shortcut to creating these knowledge systems. The innovative methodology PREDICT (Performance and Reliability Evaluation from Diverse Information, Combination, and Tracking) is used to predict the performance of a complex system undergoing change. This book provides PREDICT users with guidance on how to elicit and analyze expert judgment, including the associated uncertainty. Expert judgment is an important source of information when test data is not available.
Fuzzy Logic and Probability Applications

Fuzzy Logic and Probability Applications

Society for Industrial Applied Mathematics,U.S.

Probabilists and fuzzy enthusiasts tend to disagree about which philosophy is best and they rarely work together. As a result, textbooks usually suggest only one of these methods for problem solving, but not both. This book, with contributions from 15 experts in probability and fuzzy logic, is an exception. The contributing authors, investigators from both fields, have combined their talents to provide a practical guide showing that both fuzzy logic and probability have their place in the world of problem solving. They work together with mutual benefit for both disciplines, providing scientists and engineers with examples of and insight into the best tool for solving problems involving uncertainty. Fuzzy Logic and Probability Applications makes an honest effort to show both the shortcomings and benefits of each technique, and even demonstrates useful combinations of the two. It provides clear descriptions of both fuzzy logic and probability, as well as the theoretical background, examples, and applications from both fields, making it a useful hands-on workbook for members of both camps. It contains enough theory and references to fundamental work to provide firm ground for both engineers and scientists at the undergraduate level and above. Readers should have a familiarity with mathematics through calculus. Use of this book is not restricted to a specific course or application. It can be used in teaching probability, fuzzy logic, general problem solving, or in any course in which probability and fuzzy logic are not normally taught together. It has applications in control theory and artificial intelligence, knowledge acquisition/management, and risk/reliability analysis.
Introduction to Mathematical Portfolio Theory

Introduction to Mathematical Portfolio Theory

Mark S. Joshi; Jane M. Paterson

Cambridge University Press
2013
sidottu
In this concise yet comprehensive guide to the mathematics of modern portfolio theory the authors discuss mean-variance analysis, factor models, utility theory, stochastic dominance, very long term investing, the capital asset pricing model, risk measures including VAR, coherence, market efficiency, rationality and the modelling of actuarial liabilities. Each topic is clearly explained with assumptions, mathematics, limitations, problems and solutions presented in turn. Joshi's trademark style of clarity and practicality is here brought to classical financial mathematics. The book is suitable for mathematically trained students in actuarial studies, business and economics as well as mathematics and finance, and it can be used for both self-study and as a course text. The authors' experience as both academics and practitioners brings clarity and relevance to the book, whilst ensuring that the limitations of models are highlighted.

Jane Roberts is a young black queer high schooler that lives in the conservative town of Northpeak, Connecticut and attends John Thomas Preparatory School. It's at John Thomas, a school that is predominately white, that Jane feels for the most part that he does not belong. Jane is not the biggest fan of his school, having to deal with issues such as covert racism and constant reminders that he will never fit in on the social ladder, no matter how many friends he think he has. The headmaster of his school Duke Dunger is an older black man who is constantly making uncomfortable comments to Jane and believes that most people of his own race, cause trouble. One day Jane gets singled out and receives detention for having his electronics out in class, though the majority of his class had theirs out as well. While in detention Jane meets Louis Chavez, a new transfer student who was also singled out by the administration out of several kids for showing up late to class. It's in detention where they bond and grow a fondness for each other. While hanging out with each other, Louis decides to kiss Jane and while they both enjoyed the moment, Dunger catches them red handed. From there, their lives go down hill. From threats of suspension, to numerous protests from both sides of the argument, Jane's life is now the forefront to many political and social conversations in the media. Will Jane prevail and overcome this? Or will he crumble to those who want to see him fail?
