A Space Syntax Analysis of Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, New Mexico

A Space Syntax Analysis of Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, New Mexico

Jason S. Shapiro

School of American Research Press,U.S.

Until recently, archaeologists have rarely studied prehistoric architecture as if it were an artifact comparable to pottery or stone tools. Following the premise that built space embodies social organization, Jason Shapiro takes a fresh look at architectural data from Arroyo Hondo Pueblo, a fourteenth-century site in the northern Rio Grande Valley of presentday New Mexico. Using the theoretical assumptions and mathematical techniques of space syntax analysis, he explores what changes in architecture reveal about people's social lives. A significant shift toward greater residential "privacy" during the later period occurred in Arroyo Hondo as well as the contemporaneous pueblos of Tijeras and Puye and twentieth-century Acoma Pueblo. This analysis demonstrates that transformations in the arrangement of space can illuminate social change even when they are not accompanied by changes in other kinds of artifacts or technologies.

This book provides an introduction to quantitative marketing with Python. The book presents a hands-on approach to using Python for real marketing questions, organized by key topic areas. Following the Python scientific computing movement toward reproducible research, the book presents all analyses in Colab notebooks, which integrate code, figures, tables, and annotation in a single file. The code notebooks for each chapter may be copied, adapted, and reused in one's own analyses. The book also introduces the usage of machine learning predictive models using the Python sklearn package in the context of marketing research. This book is designed for three groups of readers: experienced marketing researchers who wish to learn to program in Python, coming from tools and languages such as R, SAS, or SPSS; analysts or students who already program in Python and wish to learn about marketing applications; and undergraduate or graduate marketing students with little or no programming background. It presumes only an introductory level of familiarity with formal statistics and contains a minimum of mathematics.

PROVERSE HONG KONG

CEMETERY MISS YOU, in the form of transcripts from audio recordings (similar to Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape") recounts the first year or so of a Pakistani illegal's experiences in Hong Kong. The work begins by detailing the boy-man's middle-class experiences in Pakistan, before he's all but forced to flee his home after shooting a man in the name of family honour. His life in Hong Kong begins as a life of poverty, living on the streets. Less than a year later he's buying rounds of drinks on The Peak, driving around in private cars, spending thousands of dollars on footwear, and making regular short trips to mainland China.----The author writes: "Saa Ji-a name adopted by a host of Indian Subcontinent illegals and refugees in Hong Kong-tells not only his own story, but also the untold story of so many peripheral figures in Hong Kong, figures compelled into unimaginably intricate underworld networks-and not because of ethical unsoundness or suspectness. Instead, these perpetually marginalized and institutionally desperate figures have no other options. Saa Ji speaks of alterity in Hong Kong, of the otherness we all ignore."In her Preface to cemetery miss you, Ina Grigorova writes from New York: "The story of this man made me realize with chilled bones that there are places on earth where the known laws of social physics simply fall apart. ... The people and events in the story are grainy, pixelated, blinking on and off; reality has been exposed at the Planck scale where any apparent continuity breaks down. // Hong Kong is a good substrate for Sci-Fi constructs, not just because Hong Kong is so insanely futuristic, a spread-out tower of Babel, and not just because if you squint you can picture cemetery's characters crossing states more exotic than national boundaries (while borrowing each other's passports and pasts), but also because the book's very surface approaches quantum foam: objects of characterization blinking on and off, end-positioned subjects slipping away into the next sentence predicate; cause and effect inverting, like the thought-wave must flow in Saa Ji's native-tongue state... A text with the wheels of its own cognitive process both at work and exposed."

Rats have long been recognized as a valuable biomedical research model, notably in the investigation of aging, toxicology, addiction, and common human diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. In many instances, individuals conducting such research studies are charged with important responsibilities, including animal facility management, animal husbandry, veterinary care, regulatory compliance, and various experimental methodologies. With the advent of genetic manipulations and biomedical research technological advances such as bioimaging, the versatility and usefulness of the rat as an animal model has soared. The Laboratory Rat, Second Edition captures the multiple advances in this important animal model‘s husbandry, veterinary care, and experimental methodology. This edition features augmented, expanded, and novel information on biology, anesthesia, analgesia, and experimental techniques benefiting personnel working with rats from the animal care staff to the researcher and everyone in between. The book is also extremely useful to institutional animal care and use program supporters and elements, including animal care and use committees, institutional officials, occupational health and safety professionals, veterinary technicians, and veterinarians.

Exploring California as a theological place, this book renders critical engagement with significant Californian religious and theological phenomena and the inherent theological impulses within major Californian cultural icons. Harnessing conceptual tools inherent to theology, through theological reflection, assessment, and critique, the chapters in this volume begin to ascertain the significance of various empirical data and that no other qualitative methodological Californian study has done. Many universities are picking up on California literature as a theme that highlights a place of hope, wonder, and cultural innovation, but have neglected the significance of theological instincts flowing through the Californian dynamic. Californians Fred Sanders and Jason Sexton assemble leading voices and specialists both from within and without California for engagement with California’s influential culture: including leading theologians and cultural critics such as Richard J. Mouw, Paul Louis Metzger, and Fred Sanders, alongside leading specialists in Film studies and cultural critique, theological anthropology, missiology, sociology, and history.

Scholars studying the ANE have noticed that Canaanite kings ruled as a representative of their god and served in a priestly role. Yahweh allows Israel to have a king ""like all the nations"" (Deut 17:14), but he shapes the monarchy according to his covenant. A key question remains, does God's allowance for a king ""like all the nations"" include a king-priest model? This study presents a synchronic view of the king as a priest within the MT of Samuel, analyzing the motif and considering how the narrator heightens the hope for the coming anointed one, whom the narrator describes as both king (1 Sam 2:10) and priest (2:35-36). This study will argue that, from the monarchy's inception, Yahweh considered Israel's kingship a sacral task. My study examined the king as a priest through a synchronic literary-theological approach.

In this study, Brian A. Verrett argues that 1-2 Samuel contains a serpent motif by practicing biblical theology and literary criticism. This motif derives from the serpent in Genesis 3, and its function within the Samuel narrative is to heighten the reader's anticipation in the coming messiah, who is the son of David and the seed of the woman from Genesis 3:15. This messiah will defeat the serpent and inaugurate his glorious reign over a renewed world. When 1-2 Samuel is read in this way, one appreciates previously unnoticed features of the text, understands aspects of the text that were formerly confusing, and rightly sees that the whole of 1-2 Samuel is a messianic document.
