Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) is considered to be one of the greatest Christian thinkers of all time. He first became known as the premier representative of the early 19th Century Oxford Movement in England, and caused a great stir with his conversion to Catholicism after his deep study of the writings of the Church Fathers. Newman is best known for his intellectual autobiography, "Apologia Pro Vita Sua," as well as "On the Development of Christian Doctrine," and "The Idea of a University." He was made a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII and beatified (the stage before being declared a saint) by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. Many believe Newman will be declared a Doctor of the Church following his assumed future canonization as a saint. See other classic Catholic books I've edited by searching "darrell wright". John Henry Newman's an Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent
Emmaus Academic

sidottu
John Henry Newman’s Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent is a masterpiece of religious epistemology, providing astute descriptive analysis of how the human mind actually works in addressing itself to reality, as well as a novel prescriptive vocabulary for fruitfully considering the assent involved in Christian belief. While it is rightly numbered among the most important of Newman’s writings, the Grammar is a difficult and complex work, combining rigorous theoretical argumentation with deeply personal reflection. In this Critical Guide to Newman’s Grammar, editors Frederick D. Aquino and Matthew Levering have assembled ten original essays on the work’s historical background and key themes and ideas. Topics discussed include Newman’s distinctions of real and notional apprehension and real and notional assent, his treatment of the role of conscience and dogmatic propositions in religious reasoning, his understanding of faith and rationality, his notions of the illative sense and the role of inference in intellectual inquiry, and his view of the relation between natural and revealed religion. The contributing authors are an international array of noteworthy Newman scholars, including Frederick D. Aquino, Christopher Cimorelli, John F. Crosby, Logan Paul Gage, Stephen Grimm, Thomas S. Hibbs, Lorraine Keller, Andrew Meszaros, Francesca Aran Murphy, Cyril O’Regan, and Geertjan Zuijdwegt. This collection of essays presents the riches of the Grammar in conversation with contemporary philosophical and theological concerns, guiding readers into its central topics while also advancing its scholarly reception.

John Henry Gurney: A Passion for Birds details the life of John Henry Gurney (1819-1890) who became a successful banker when still young. His wealth enabled him to indulge his passion for collecting natural history specimens, especially birds. A major supporter of the fledgling Norfolk and Norwich Museum, in 1853 he announced his intention to collect a series of every species of bird of prey in the world, and to donate and display them in the museum. Unfortunately, devastating events in his private and professional life threatened to derail his efforts. Nevertheless, he persisted in his specimen-collecting and ornithological studies and became a world-renowned expert on birds of prey and the birds of southern Africa. Gurney named nearly 30 bird species new to science and had several species named after him. He made significant and long-lasting contributions to bird identification and knowledge of the distribution of many species. But why did he choose to collect and study birds of prey in particular; how closely did he approach his goal and how much did it cost him? This book attempts to answer these questions.

John Henry Newman and the Crisis of Modernity
Lexington Books/Fortress Academic

This book blends historical, theological, and philosophical inquiries into what “modernity” means with the aim of showing how Newman can analyze, critique, and explain fruitful ways forward within a diverse range of subjects. First, it surveys historical and theological topics such as how Newman understood “modernity,” the sensus fidelium, the role of doubt and modern views of reason; Newman’s university ideal; and a return to the saint for much-needed anthropological insights. Second, the volume shows how Newman’s thought can be insightfully applied to key issues within church and society: the need to redefine “American” Catholicism, the challenge of secularization, the role of Christian joy, revelation and religious diversity, progress traps and the ecological crisis, and overcoming post-modern individualism. Throughout each chapter, contributors consistently bring Newman’s original and penetrating thought to bear upon critical themes in theological anthropology, ecclesiology, comparative theology, and spirituality. The volume shows how Newman’s thought can be extended and enriched by dialogue with contemporary thinkers such as Charles Taylor, Pope Francis, and Bruno Latour. In brief, the contributors demonstrate how Newman can help frame contemporary self-understandings and various theological and social imaginaries in the light of faith.
