Jon McCormack: Patterns. Art of the Natural World
Stunning photography reveals the hidden architecture of the natural world, from grand vistas to tiny details, punctuated by surprise encounters with wildlife. For nature and animal lovers alike, this book offers a dynamic and unforgettable journey celebrating the interconnectedness of life and form. Wonders: Exploring Nature's Art explores the natural design woven into the fabric of our planet. See the beauty of unexpected structures and delicate rhythms echoed across animal markings, grand landscapes, geological formations, and botanical design—all in breathtaking detail. The photographs in this book were made across a wide arc of the natural world: from the volcanic coasts of Iceland to the wilds of Kenya, the icy fjords of Antarctica to the rainforests of British Columbia. They follow the silent geometry of hippo trails in Botswana, the intricate symmetry of ice caves in Svalbard, and the mysterious worlds found in cold underwater environments. Many of the images were also created close to Jon’s home, along the coastlines, forests, and deserts of California—a testament to the universality of pattern wherever nature is allowed to thrive. Throughout, encounter wildlife interwoven within these complex environments, creating fleeting patterns of movement both beautiful and vital. Each turn of the page reveals a new perspective on the symmetries that shape both the grand and the small: tree rings under a microscope juxtaposed with elephant migration trails seen from above; the delicate architecture that structures both mineral formations and the feathers of ancient birds. These quiet, often-overlooked subtleties are more relevant than ever as our planet—this remarkable and irreplaceable home, brimming with beauty—is also marked by a profound fragility. A lyrical introduction encourages readers to contemplate the natural wonders that surround us, while short essays by explorers and scientists throughout the book illuminate the images. This book serves as a testament to the enduring power of nature and the interconnectedness of all things—a reminder that whether vast or minute, still or in motion, the natural world is a masterpiece of pattern and life.

A Chilling True Story of Injustice David Parrish was in disbelief when he learned that nineteen-year-old Jon Bowie's body had been found hanged from a backstop at the local high school's baseball field and the death declared a suicide. David had known Jon and his twin brother since they were boys. He had coached them on the baseball field and welcomed them into his home for sleepovers with his own sons. However, when David learned how Jon's body was found, he felt compelled to find the facts behind the incomprehensible tragedy. Soon, David would learn of a brutal incident at a local motel where Jon and his brother had been severely beaten by police officers, the charges filed against those officers, and the months of harassment and intimidation Jon and his brother endured. Few in the utopian community of Columbia, Maryland, believed Jon could commit such a final act. Like many others, David wondered how a fateful night of teens blowing off steam could lead to such a tragic end. As law enforcement failed to find answers and seemed intent on preventing the truth from surfacing, David uncovered a system of cover-ups that could only lead to one conclusion--Jon's death was an act of murder. "A true page turner, filled with almost-too-unbelievable-to-be-true details of one community's fight to find justice for one of its own . . . the issues raised, particularly when it comes to questions of police brutality and cover-ups, are very much relevant today." --New York Times bestselling author Lisa Pulitzer Includes 16 Pages of Photographs

(Misc). The Jon Lord Collection is a new volume of vocal scores and piano arrangements of some of Jon Lord's most famous songs and instrumental pieces. Jon's genius for improvisation meant that his own performances were constantly evolving, and with most of these compositions he never got around to actually notating definitive versions of the scores. His long-time friend and musical collaborator Paul Mann has painstakingly combined all of Jon's extant manuscript material with new transcriptions from the original recordings to arrive at the first-ever authoritative published versions of eleven essential pieces. Included are some of Jon's most celebrated solo songs, including those written in collaboration with Sam Brown ("Wait a While," "One from the Meadow," "The Sun Will Shine Again"), together with a more recent collaboration with Steve Balsamo ("All Those Years Ago"). The collection would not be complete without "Pictured Within," composed to lyrics by the composer himself, and made famous by the incomparable performances of Miller Anderson. Completing the collection are instrumental pieces from the 2004 album Beyond the Notes, including Jon's meditation on his departure from Deep Purple "De Profundis," the Brubeck-inspired "Cologne Again," the gentle but subtly complex "Miles Away," (which was to form the basis of the slow movement of his piano concerto Boom of the Tingling Strings ) and the wildly virtuosic "Telemann Experiment" which, in typical Jon style, combines elements of rock and blues with the music borrowed from a suite by an early 18th century German Baroque composer. Jon Lord's genre-defying music is presented here for the first time in a form which makes it readily accessible to musicians and music-lovers alike.
