Creating Reality in Factual Television analyzes the uneasy interaction between economics, culture, and professional ethics in reality and documentary television storytelling. Through the "frankenbite," an editorial tool that extracts and re-orders the salient elements or single words of a statement, interview, or exchange into a revealing confession or argument, the book explores how and why editors manipulate truth in factual television. The author considers how the editing of documentary television is increasingly following reality television’s dictate to entertain instead of inform, how the "real" and the "truth" fall victim to the demand to "tell entertaining stories," and how editors must compromise their professional ethics as a result. vii PREFACE It was 13 years ago that we met for the ?rst time at a German developmental psychology conference. One of us, Wolfgang Friedlmeier (WF), was interested in ontogenetic development from a cross-cultural perspective. He presented a study on the development of empathy and distress in preschool age, dealing with how far children from different cultures respond to comparable demands with different emotions and regulation strategies. The other, Manfred Holodynski (MH), was - terested in ontogenetic development from the perspective of internalization: how processes that are originally socially distributed between persons are transformed into mental processes within the individual. He presented a study on the devel- ment of the emotions pride and shame in preschool age. This led the two of us to discover our common interest in central issues of emotional development: What role do the emotions play in an individual’s activity regulation? What is it exactly that is “developing” when we talk about emotional development? Do emotional processes have a social genesis? And what is the role of the early social interactions between children and their caregivers, along with the obvious fact that individuals grow up and live in completely different cultures? Even at this time, we both already suspected that the social and cultural embedment of the individual would prove to be a key to understanding how the diversity of human emotions and their regulation develop.

This book presents a fundamental mathematical and logical approach to soft ware and systems engineering. Considering the large number of books de scribing mathematical approaches to program development, it is important to explain what we consider to be the specific contribution of our book, to identify our goals, and to characterize our intended target audience. Most books dealing with the mathematics and logics of programming and system development are mainly devoted to programming in the small. This is in contrast to our book where the emphasis is on modular system development with the help of component specifications with precisely identified interfaces and refinement concepts. Our book aims at systems development carried out in a systematic way, based on a clear mathematical theory. We do not claim that this book presents a full-blown engineering method. In fact, this is certainly not a book for the application-driven software engi neer looking for a practical method for system development in an industrial context. It is much rather a book for the computer scientist and the scientifi cally interested engineer who looks for basic principles of system development and, moreover, its mathematical foundations. It is also a book for method builders interested in a proper mathematical foundation on which they can build a practical development method and industrial-strength support tools.
Although Dr. Bukofzer's main field of study was medieval and Renaissance music, he made important contributions in other areas too, such as a monograph on Javanese music, and an edition of the complete works of John Dunstable. His Music in the Baroque Era (Norton, 1947) is the standard work on that period. The studies in the present volume mainly deal with fifteenth-century music, exploring many compositions whose historical and musical importance have not hitherto been fully understood. Some of the papers treat early English music, others discuss various aspects of Renaissance music, the emergence of choral polyphony, dance music, and the problem of the cyclic Mass. Dr. Bukofzer's scholarly research has enlarged both our understanding of an pleasure in this music, and reveals it as an expression of the very same creative spirit that produced the great cathedrals, paintings, and sculptures of the period. Gustave Reese has called these studies "a major contribution by one of the greatest authorities on medieval and Renaissance music."
