This book introduces readers to electrospinning, a nanofabrication technique used to produce nanofibers, and discusses the properties and applications of these nanofibers. The book begins with an overview of the electrospinning process, and strategies for producing nanofibers with different morphologies. The advantages and limitations of the nanofiber technology, and future outlook are addressed next. Then recent and novel applications of electrospun nanofibers in different areas including biomedical, environmental, textile and energy are discussed, followed by a more detailed review of the fabrication and properties of electrospun nanofiber membranes and composites.
Gender Inequalities and Development in Latin America During the Twentieth Century

Gender Inequalities and Development in Latin America During the Twentieth Century

María Magdalena Camou; Silvana Maubrigades; Rosemary Thorp

This book presents evidence of the evolution of the gender inequalities in Latin America during the twentieth century, using basic indicators of human development, namely education, health and the labour market. There are very few historical studies that centre on gender as the main analytical category in Latin America, so this book breaks new ground. Using case-studies from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay, the authors show that there is evidence of a correlation between economic growth and the decrease in gender inequality, but this process is also not linear. Although the activity rate of women was high at the beginning of the twentieth century, female participation in the labour market diminished, until the 1970s, when it began to increase dramatically. Since the 1970s, fertility reduction and education improvements and worsening labour market conditions are associated to the steadily increase of women participation in the labour market. By gauging the extent to which gender gaps in the formation of human capital, access to resources, quality of life and opportunities may have operated as a restriction on women’s capabilities and on economic growth in the region, this book demonstrates that Latin America has lagged behind in terms of gender equality.

An overview of the history of packaging, its multiple functions, diverse packaging materials, and packaging machinery Well-managed food packaging can provide humankind with a dependable solution for sustenance. Packaging is a critical tool for food preservation and food protection and facilitates the safe distribution of food. Effective packaging can lead to longer shelf-lives and improved global supply chain issues, and sustainable packaging can reduce food and environmentally harmful waste. Recent innovation in food packaging has shown it to be a dynamic field capable of evolving to meet new market and consumer needs. Introduction to Food Packaging is an accessible overview, detailing its history, general principles, and its future in the industry. It introduces traditional and new materials alike and a diverse lineup of packaging technologies —which are continuously entering the market, along with other relevant topics. The result is a book which clearly demonstrates the potential of food packaging to meet the challenges of a sustainable, globalized world. Introduction to Food Packaging readers will also find: An interactive digital version and a printed version including a full-color presentation with images, figures, tables and videos (digital version) presenting relevant key terms for each chapter, key concepts, learning objectives, an exhaustive bibliography and pertinent websites along with useful questions on key conceptsDetailed discussion of topics including functions, packaging materials, packaging technologies, worldwide packaging regulation and more A companion website for instructors with answers to the questions posed on each chapterIntroduction to Food Packaging is ideal for students and instructors involved in Food Science and Technology classes related to food packaging as well as Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering and Bioengineering students interested in learning about the principles, applications, and relevant topics of food packaging.

The definitive book on the work of a virtuosic and revered American photographer “Irving Penn: Centennial . . . presents page after page of startlingly fresh images.”—Luc Sante, New York Times Irving Penn (1917–2009) was among the most esteemed and influential photographers of the twentieth century. Over the course of a nearly seventy-year career, he mastered a pared-down aesthetic of studio photography that is distinguished for its meticulous attention to composition, nuance, and detail. This indispensable book features one of the largest selections of Penn’s photographs ever compiled, including famous and beloved images as well as works that have never been published, spanning the entirety of his groundbreaking career. An enlightening introduction situates his work in the context of the various artistic, social, and political environments and events that affected the content of his photographs. Lively essays acquaint readers with Penn’s primary subjects and campaigns, including early documentary scenes and imagery; portraits; fashion; female nudes; peoples of Peru, Dahomey (Benin), New Guinea, and Morocco; still lifes; and much more. Irving Penn: Centennial is essential for any fan of this artist’s work or the history of twentieth-century photography. Engineering Computation of Structures: The Finite Element Method

Engineering Computation of Structures: The Finite Element Method

This book presents theories and the main useful techniques of the Finite Element Method (FEM), with an introduction to FEM and many case studies of its use in engineering practice. It supports engineers and students to solve primarily linear problems in mechanical engineering, with a main focus on static and dynamic structural problems.Readers of this text are encouraged to discover the proper relationship between theory and practice, within the finite element method: Practice without theory is blind, but theory without practice is sterile.Beginning with elasticity basic concepts and the classical theories of stressed materials, the work goes on to apply the relationship between forces, displacements, stresses and strains on the process of modeling, simulating and designing engineered technical systems. Chapters discuss the finite element equations for static, eigenvalue analysis, as well as transient analyses.Students and practitioners using commercial FEM software will find this book very helpful. It uses straightforward examples to demonstrate a complete and detailed finite element procedure, emphasizing the differences between exact and numerical procedures.

Hvert kapittel åpner med to motivasjonsider.
