Everyone is on a spiritual journey, whether they acknowledge it or not.Everyone, at one point in life, hits a roadblock of suffering and pain. When that happens, a choice appears: to allow hardship to make you bitter or to allow it to make you better. Mary Kay came to such a junction the moment she discovered her vibrant nine-year-old daughter, Katie, had been diagnosed with cancer. Would Mary Kay allow this disease to destroy her family and her faith, or would she use this tragedy to rise and seek God for answers?Truth enlightened their journey. Peace was found in the center of chaos. Joy overflowed amid sadness. Discovering life--while fighting death--opened their eyes to purpose. What was that purpose? To use their "dash" for God's glory. Each of us is given specific days on earth: the day of our birth, the day of our death, and the "dash" of the days in between. As the mother-and-daughter duo continue to endure this uphill battle, in faith, they use their "dash" to know God and to make Him known, which allows miracles and adventures to unfold.

Our Bible teaches us that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. Be strong, have faith, carry on. But what if our daily challenges reach a breaking point? How do we handle our grief then, witnessing dreams shatter like exploding glass? Suffering heartache so profound one cannot take another step? We ask God why? Why is He giving us so many tests? And when we finally muster the courage to move forward again, how do we know which way to go?It is 2015, and recent UCLA graduate, Tiffany Ryan lands the prestigious job as assistant to Monique Mason, a world-famous novelist. Things go well between these two colleagues until Tiffany discovers that her manuscript about her late grandmother's plight during the 1930s Dust Bowl, a story titled Heartache and Hope, has been stolen right out from under her nose-by her boss. When more deceit is revealed, how does Tiffany turn her world right-side up again?Embedded within Tiffany's story are her grandmother's heartbreaking journal entries, of the deaths and destruction that intolerable dust caused for almost ten years. It is a love story of faith and hope for two Christians, Willie and Rose and their three children-how they prayed every day for God's miraculous intervention, for the drought to end, for Him to release his blessed rain; rain that would not only quench their thirst but save their souls. This is the manuscript Tiffany wrote. This was her heart. And a powerful person took it from her.

‘The lives of women are inextricably linked to the well-being of children. If they are not educated, if they are not healthy, if they are not empowered, the children are the ones who suffer.’ (UNICEF report, 2006) The study this book is based upon was of a pioneering facilitating programme enabling low-income mothers with little to no outside support to attend college or university. The women’s stories are told in their own words and are used to explore the importance of education as a way to improve their and their children’s lives. The book begins with an engaging Foreword from Rosemary H. Balsam, FRCPsych (London), MRCP (Edinburgh), Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale Medical School. Followed by the author’s introduction, the book is then split into three parts. Part I sets the background of the study itself and of Western societal attitudes towards single mothers over the centuries. Mary Kay O’Neil also investigates common maternal tasks, the effect of parental and relational experiences, the life impact of becoming a mother, and the various influences on the decision mother alone. Part II considers the characteristics basic to effective mothering: resilience, autonomy, and caring. In the light of the author’s interest in women’s development, Part III explores the psychodynamic understanding of mothers alone without resources, and outlines society’s role in providing the opportunity for them to become successful mothers. The parts are followed by an Afterword to summarise what was learned through the women’s generous openness and to suggest societal improvements for increased opportunity. The book closes with two Appendices. The first tells the story of O’Neil’s mother, who also mothered alone. The second delivers the research findings of the study for those interested in learning more. This clearly written book underlines the UNICEF statement above and does much to engage with the debate on support for those most vulnerable members of society.
