“A treasure of hardcore fish intelligence and delightful tidbits of fish history.”—Dale Bowman, Chicago Sun-TimesFish don’t heed state boundaries, and neither does this comprehensive, photo-filled guide to the diverse species of Chicago and beyond. Encompassing southern Lake Michigan, northeastern Illinois, and adjacent areas of Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin, the Chicago Region is home to rare habitats supporting diverse fish populations. From small creeks to large rivers and from small ponds to one of the world’s largest freshwater ecosystems, Lake Michigan, these systems are home to some 164 fish species representing 31 families. In this essential field guide, the most complete and up-to-date reference for fishes in the Chicago Region, we meet them all—lampreys, sturgeon, paddlefish, gars, drum, darters, perches, sticklebacks, sculpins, and more. Written by leading local ecologists and featuring a pictorial family key, color photographs, detailed species distribution maps, and natural history observations unique to the region, this go-to guide belongs on the shelf—and in the boat—of every angler, naturalist, fisheries manager, and biologist.
Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress

Mechanisms of Physical and Emotional Stress

It has been over 50 years since Hans Selye formulated his concept of stress. This came after the isolation of epinephrine and norepinephrine and after the sympathetic system was associated with Walter Cannon's "fight or flight" response. The intervening years have witnessed a number of dis coveries that have furthered our understanding of the mechanisms of the stress response. The isolation, identification and manufacture of gluco corticoids, the identification and synthesis of ACTH and vasopressin, and the demonstration of hypothalamic regulation of ACTH secretion were pivotal discoveries. The recent identification and synthesis of CRR by Willie Vale and his colleagues gave new impetus to stress research. Several new concepts of stress have developed as a result of advances in bench research. These include the concept of an integrated "stress sys tem", the realization that there are bi-directional effects between stress and the immune system, the suggestion that a number of common psychiatric disorders represent dysregulation of systems responding to stress, and the epidemiologic association of stress with the major scourges of humanity.

Positive Strategies for Students with Behavior Problems

Positive Strategies for Students with Behavior Problems

Brookes Publishing Co

This book is a guide to behavior management for students (both typically developing and special needs) with behavior problems that cannot be resolved through usual methods or are not affected by school-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS). This manual helps school teams develop appropriate and effective individualized solutions for students with persistent behavior problems. It presents a systematic method called Positive Strategies, which centers on two major activities, conducting Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and developing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). ""Positive Strategies"" is grounded in the literature on PBS, central to which is the notion than understanding the function of problem behavior (i.e., how it meets a child's needs in some way) is fundamental to successfully addressing it.
Fire in Mediterranean Ecosystems

Fire in Mediterranean Ecosystems

Cambridge University Press

Exploring the role of fire in each of the five Mediterranean-type climate ecosystems, this book offers a unique view of the evolution of fire-adapted traits and the role of fire in shaping Earth's ecosystems. Analyzing these geographically separate but ecologically convergent ecosystems provides key tools for understanding fire regime diversity and its role in the assembly and evolutionary convergence of ecosystems. Topics covered include regional patterns, the ecological role of wildfires, the evolution of species within those systems, and the ways in which societies have adapted to living in fire-prone environments. Outlining complex processes clearly and methodically, the discussion challenges the belief that climate and soils alone can explain the global distribution and assembly of plant communities. An ideal research tool for graduates and researchers, this study provides valuable insights into fire management and the requirements for regionally tailored approaches to fire management across the globe.
Naval Arms Control

Naval Arms Control

St Martin's Press
1991

Despite entreaties by the former Soviet Union, the US refused to discuss controls on naval forces. The difference between the US and Soviet approaches to naval forces is the product of differences in geography, history and strategic interests. This work reviews the factors that make naval arms control so difficult, and outlines causes of maritime accidents, the effects of limits on attack submarines and possibilities for limiting maritime nuclear weapons. Barry M. Blechman has also written "The Politics of National Defense". William J. Durch is also the author of "The ABM and Western Security".
