Phytogeographically isolated from other cacti habitats by ‘hostile’ environments, Eastern Brazil boasts a high percentage of endemic taxa, making it a discrete area of study and of great importance for conservation. This landmark publication includes 77 full page colour plates and 51 colour maps.
Mathematical Modeling with Algebra: Using Authentic Problem Contexts

Mathematical Modeling with Algebra: Using Authentic Problem Contexts

Kenneth R. Chelst; Thomas G. Edwards

This book is all about solving authentic problems in real word contexts. The contexts have been chosen with two goals in mind: 1) To resonate with high school students' interests, and 2) to demonstrate the broad applicability of mathematics. Each context meets at least one of these goals, and some meet both goals. Embedded in each context is some sort of decision so that students are introduced to mathematics as a decision-making tool. The contexts are varied and include choosing the best wireless plan, optimizing production at a skateboard factory, minimizing the cost of reducing pollutants, scheduling workers in a pizzeria, choosing the right mix of colleges to apply to, and finding the best location for a disaster response facility. Throughout the book, students will be making sense of problems, persevering in their solution, mathematically modeling real-world contexts, using appropriate tools when necessary, and attending to the precision of results.

This book analyzes authentic decision problems in meaningful contexts that involve randomness. It uses basic probability concepts as well as probability distributions to model a wide range of scenarios that involve uncertainty. These include managing customer service phone lines, buying collision insurance, analyzing the pattern of space shuttle disasters, dealing with absenteeism, scheduling a health care clinic, and improving graduation rates. The contexts have been chosen to align with high school students' interests and/or demonstrate the broad applicability of mathematics. Embedded in each context is some decision so that students are introduced to mathematics as a decision-making tool. Throughout the book, students will make sense of problems, persevere in their solution, mathematically model real-world contexts, and use appropriate tools when necessary. A key aspect of this probability text is that students will simulate probabilistic situations with random number generators to develop intuition as to the nature of randomness.
Mining

Mining

Karen A. Hudson-Edwards; Hannah S.R. Hughes

Oxford University Press

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring 'If it can't be grown, it must be mined'. This fundamental truth underscores the global need for mining, and the reason why it has been carried out since prehistoric times. To supply the raw materials for buildings, industrial goods, vehicles, technology, and even art, minerals and rock must be removed from the Earth. 'Mining' describes this removal, but also covers the ore deposit exploration, developments of ore deposit models (geological, engineering and mineral economics-focused) and post-removal processing to extract the economically valuable materials, environmental protection, and social and corporate responsibility, in a construct known as the 'Mining Value Chain'. Mining continues to evolve due to the new emphasis on extracting a wider range of materials than ever before for green technologies, on using novel robotic and earth observation technology in exploration and mining, and on integrating environmental and social protection measures throughout the Mining Value Chain. Today's paradigms are 'sustainable' and 'responsible mining', mining that is profitable but protects the environment, human rights, and health. Mining: A Very Short Introduction covers this information and looks to the future to see where mining ideally will go. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
Hells Empire: Tales of the Incursion

Hells Empire: Tales of the Incursion

Charles R. Rutledge; S. L. Edwards; Matt Willis

Independently Published

A unique anthology of two thrones at war as the forces of Hell assault an unsuspecting Victorian Britain. The cry went out to theologians and engineers, to artificers and antiquarians, to every name which could be named. By telegraph where lines were still intact, and by volunteer riders where they were not; smuggled along the coast in fishing smacks, semaphored from hill-tops. It came without royal sanction, issued jointly by the Lords of the Admiralty and Marquess Lansdowne, the new Secretary of State for War: "In God's name, help us. We are losing."
The Birth of Industrial Accounting in France and Britain

The Birth of Industrial Accounting in France and Britain

Trevor Boyns; John R. Edwards; Marc Nikitin

CRC Press Inc

First Published in 1998. The area examined in this book falls loosely under the category of 'accounting integration' where research should explain how the accounting systems in both countries are designed to integrate cost and financial accounting. The authors of this book had previously been working independently on the early development of accounting for industrial enterprises within their own countries. They claim that in order to understand modern day similarities and differences, it is necessary to understand how the current practices and systems have come into being.
