Cy Twombly - Reiner Speck. Fragments of an Adoration: Cat. Maison d'Art Los Angeles
Dr Reiner Speck is a distinguished physician and one of the most prominent bibliophiles of our time. Over more than six decades, he has built an unparalleled collection of antiquarian literature, including world-famous collections of Renaissance poet and scholar Petrarch and French novelist Marcel Proust. However, Speck's passion for collecting extends beyond books. Since the late 1960s, he has also been deeply committed to acquiring artists' books and contemporary art. His extensive collection of works on paper by the American artist Cy Twombly (1928- 2011) is especially noteworthy. This collection includes drawings from the 1950s to the early 1980s, prints, multiples, photographs, and artists' books, and reflects a profound and decades-long intellectual engagement with Twombly's work. The connection between Dr Speck and Twombly began around 1970, when the two met in front of the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. Speck had traveled to Rome specifically to meet the artist and to ask him to sign a 1957 drawing he had acquired two years earlier in Cologne, and which is on view in this exhibition. This meeting marked the beginning of a deep friendship.

Render plunges the reader into the vibrant setting of Barcelona in the second half of the twentieth century. A compelling character study, the book is presented as the collected works of a fictional poet: Alberto Cenas, the lonely scion of a wealthy Catalan family. Taken individually, Render's poems offer piercing insights into the exuberance of youth, the disillusionment of early adulthood, inherited trauma, creativity, ageing and finality. Collectively, the book delivers the immersive experience of a concept album or an existentialist film, creating a complex portrait of a strange and sympathetic figure.

This award-winning book, now available in paperback, is the first solid appraisal of the legendary career of the eminent Hungarian-born conductor Fritz Reiner (1888-1963). Personally enigmatic and often described as difficult to work with, he was nevertheless renowned for the dynamic galvanization of the orchestras he led, a nearly unrivaled technical ability, and high professional standards. Reiner's influence in the United States began in the early 1920s and lasted until his death. Reiner was also deeply committed to serious music in American life, especially through the promotion of new scores. In Fritz Reiner, Maestro and Martinet, Kenneth Morgan paints a very real portrait of a man who was both his own worst enemy and one of the true titans of his profession.

This is a biography of one of the century's most important conductors of opera and symphonic music. Fritz Reiner (1888-1963) led major orchestras in Europe and the Americas, including those of Chicago, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. After distinguished opera conducting in Philadelphia and San Francisco, he spent five memorable seasons at the Metropolitan Opera. He was not only a consummate musician but also a major participant in the evolution of concert and opera in America, in the development of characteristically American music, and in the education of musicians. Leonard Bernstein, his most famous pupil, declared, ""Reiner is responsible for my own very high standards"". His most enduring legacy, his recordings made with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, are now more highly regarded than they were in his lifetime - indeed, most of Reiner's recorded repertory was reissued on compact disc much more quickly than that of other conductors of his era. Hart's unique perspective - he was Reiner's colleague at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and remained his friend until his death - informs this work and grounds Reiner's career in the cultural context in which he worked and lived. Drawing heavily on the resources of the Fritz Reiner Library at Northwestern University and on other archives in America and Europe, as well as on his own extensive contacts in the field, Hart supplements research with personal knowledge and experience to produce an authoritative study of his complex subject. The book includes comprehensive recordings and repertory lists and an illuminating epilogue detailing the disposition of Reiner's estate. ""Fritz Reiner: A Biography"" offers a portrait of a brilliant conductor. Philip Hart is the author of ""Orpheus in the New World"", a study of the symphony orchestra as a cultural institution in the United States. His long career in music administration has included positions at The Juilliard School and with orchestras in Portland and Seattle, as well as six years spent as the Associate Manager of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Robert Cassanello

What defines a city’s public space? Who designates such areas, who determines their uses, and who gets to use them? Today’s “Occupy” movement has brought widespread attention to these issues, but Robert Cassanello demonstrates that such questions have been part of urban life for more than a century.Rough-and-tumble nineteenth-century Jacksonville serves as a springboard to his exploration of social transformation in Florida and the South. When free black men in the city first began to vote, conservative lawmakers pushed blacks from white public spaces in order to make blacks voiceless—invisible—in the public square and thus making the public sphere a white domain. The response was a black counter public that at times flourished clandestinely and at other times challenged racism in the public sphere. Fortified by the theories of Henri Lefebvre, David Harvey, and Jürgen Habermas, this is the first book to focus on the tumultuous emergence of the African American working class in Jacksonville between Reconstruction and the 1920s. Cassanello brings to light many of the reasons Jacksonville, like Birmingham, Alabama, and other cities throughout the South, continues to struggle with its contentious racial past.
