Live by the Phone: A Gambler's Best Wish and Worst Nightmare
It's Halloween and Frank Scarpelli is a down-on-his-luck gambler. His wife has threatened to leave him if he places one more bet and the mafia will exact their revenge if he doesn't pay his debts. He's out of money and out of time. Everything hinges on the Monday Night Football game. Frank has always wished he could know the outcome before the game, but when an unusual trick-or-treater offers to make his wildest dreams come true, will it be all he hoped for? This book is a product of something that happened some 30 years ago when an old friend called me, knowing my desire to be a writer, and asked me to make up a scary Halloween story for her son for school homework. I did a very short version of this short story for him, and it got him an A+. During a move from one apartment to another, I ran across this version. Since I was unemployed (long story), I decided to begin "The Book" that everyone has always wanted to write. It has remained a work in progress from that time until now. "Live by the Phone: A Gambler's Best Wish and Worst Nightmare" is what I refer to as "Faction", a cross between Fact and Fiction. A lot of what you will read contains many facts about the area in which I live, and, of course, many changed names to protect "The Guilty" It is semi-autobiographical and a story which I always wished could be true. As you will discover, the story could have had many other endings, and, if and when I write again, look for that to be the case.
White Nights and The Gambler (Royal Collector's Edition) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)
White Nights by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a poignant short story that delves into themes of loneliness, longing, and unrequited love. Set in St. Petersburg during the "white nights" of summer, when the sky remains light, the story follows a solitary young man who spends his nights wandering the city. He encounters Nastenka, a young woman dealing with her own romantic troubles, and the two form a fleeting yet profound connection. Through their conversations, Dostoevsky explores the complexities of human relationships and the inner lives of dreamers, capturing the bittersweet beauty of love and the ache of isolation. The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a novel that examines the psychological grip of gambling addiction and the destructive pursuit of wealth. The story follows Alexei Ivanovich, a young tutor entangled in complex relationships and driven by his intense, often unrequited love for Polina. As Alexei becomes increasingly consumed by gambling, he spirals into a world of risk, obsession, and self-destruction. Drawing from his own experiences with gambling, Dostoevsky vividly portrays the highs and lows of chance, capturing both the thrill and the peril of addiction in a narrative that explores human weakness and the relentless lure of fortune. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

Three Days at the Brink Low Price CD: Fdr's Daring Gamble to Win World War II
From the #1 bestselling author of Three Days in Moscow and anchor of Fox News Channel's Special Report with Bret Baier, a gripping history of the secret meeting that set the stage for victory in World War II--the now-forgotten 1943 Tehran Conference, where Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin plotted the war's endgame, including the D-Day invasion.November 1943: World War II teetered in the balance. The Nazis controlled nearly all of the European continent. Japan dominated the Pacific. Allied successes at Sicily and Guadalcanal had gained modest ground but at an extraordinary cost. On the Eastern Front, the Soviets had already lost millions of lives. That same month in Tehran, with the fate of the world in question, the "Big Three"--Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin--secretly met for the first time to chart a strategy for defeating Hitler. Over three days, this trio--strange bedfellows united by their mutual responsibility as heads of the Allied powers--made essential decisions that would direct the final years of the war and its aftermath. Meanwhile, looming over the covert meeting was the possible threat of a Nazi assassination plot nicknamed "Operation Long Jump," heightening the already dramatic stakes. Before they left Tehran, the three leaders agreed to open a second front in the West, spearheaded by an invasion of France at Normandy the following June. They also discussed what might come after the war, including dividing Germany and establishing the United Nations--plans that laid the groundwork for the postwar world order and the Cold War.Bret Baier's new epic history Three Days at the Brink centers on these crucial days in Tehran, the medieval Persian city on the edge of the desert. Baier makes clear the importance of Roosevelt, who stood apart as the sole leader of a democracy, recognizing him as the lead strategist for the globe's future--the one man who could ultimately allow or deny the others their place in history. With new details found in rarely seen transcripts, oral histories, and declassified State Department and presidential documents from the FDR Library, Baier illuminates the complex character of Roosevelt, revealing a man who grew into his role and accepted the greatest calling of the last century.Weaving a fresh narrative of FDR's rise as a war president and his world-altering relationships with Churchill and Stalin during the decisive turning point in World War II, Baier has produced the biggest book yet in his acclaimed Three Days series.
