Rare events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods fortunately do not occur every day, but when they do, their effects are devastating. Such rare events are particularly important in understanding and characterizing global warming and climate changes. In addition to natural catastrophes, rare events such as big financial crashes also play a significant role in the economy. In the absence of predictive models, the best way forward is to analyse the statistics of these extreme events and draw conclusions about the probability of their occurrences. Extreme value statistics (EVS) and the statistics of records in a random sequence are examples of a truly interdisciplinary topic, spanning from statistics and mathematics on one side to physics of disordered systems on the other. They have tremendous importance and practical applications in a wide variety of fields, such as climate science, finance, spin-glasses, and random matrices. Statistics and mathematical literature have explored the subject of the classical theory of EVS. However, more recently, EVS started to play a very important role in statistical physics, in particular in disordered systems. This has led to a plethora of activities, both in the statistical physics and in the mathematics communities over the last few decades. This book develops the theory of rare events, both for the classical uncorrelated as well as for correlated sequences, in terms of simple models and examples. Statistics of Extremes and Records in Random Sequences is a pedagogical book with examples illustrating the basic tools and techniques that are essential to a student starting to work in this interesting and rapidly developing field.
The concept of higher order derivatives is useful in many branches of mathematics and its applications. As they are useful in many places, nth order derivatives are often defined directly. Higher Order Derivatives discusses these derivatives, their uses, and the relations among them. It covers higher order generalized derivatives, including the Peano, d.l.V.P., and Abel derivatives; along with the symmetric and unsymmetric Riemann, Cesàro, Borel, LP-, and Laplace derivatives.Although much work has been done on the Peano and de la Vallée Poussin derivatives, there is a large amount of work to be done on the other higher order derivatives as their properties remain often virtually unexplored. This book introduces newcomers interested in the field of higher order derivatives to the present state of knowledge. Basic advanced real analysis is the only required background, and, although the special Denjoy integral has been used, knowledge of the Lebesgue integral should suffice.

This book provides a synthesis of some recent issues and an up-to-date treatment of some of the major important issues in distributional analysis that I have covered in my previous book Ethical Social Index Numbers, which was widely accepted by students, teachers, researchers and practitioners in the area. At the core of postmodern thought, especially in literary theory, is the belief that such ideals as truth, reason, and objectivity are social constructs that have no universal or trans-historical validity. In exploring this constructivist view, Satya P. Mohanty examines its underlying epistemological claims and their social and political implications. His book points the way toward a critical alternative to the epistemological and cultural relativisms. Mohanty grounds his critique in readings of some of the major figures of postmodernism, including Paul de Man, Louis Althusser, Fredric Jameson, and Jacques Derrida and analyzes the views of Mikhail Bakhtin, C. S. Peirce, Hilary Putnam, and Richard Rorty, particularly their notions of language and referentiality.
