Pets hold a special place in our hearts. They are our companions, our best friends, our children, even our therapists at times. This collection of stories is a tribute to the animals that have blessed us with their love. About Hearts Alive Village: Hearts Alive Village Las Vegas (HAVLV) is a 501 c]3 organization whose mission is to secure loving and stable homes for dogs and cats at risk of being lost in the shelter system. The organization began because of a journal entry from Christy Stevens' 10 year old daughter about her "One Wish". Kendall Stevens wanted to start an animal rescue called Hearts Alive Village, where she would save everything from dogs and cats, to pigs and goats. Two years later, they are short a few pigs, but the rescue has saved more than 110 animals, and fed and cared for 100s more through a variety of owner support programs. Hearts Alive aims to keep pets in their original homes whenever possible. Programs like Kendall's Kupboard (a pet food pantry), which feeds more than 200 dogs and cats in low income families each month, and Solutions over Surrenders gives pet owners access to resources like training, financial assistance, and more, allow families to stay together, even during the difficult times. This 100% volunteer rescue also provides Humane Education to youth groups throughout the valley, works with Veterans to place amazing pets with loving individuals, and provides transitional housing for a domestic abuse survivor. They live by the slogan "It takes a village", and work to bring the community together to improve the lives for all animals. In June of 2015, they opened their first Adoption Center and Pet Supply Store, giving animals a place to meet potential adopters, and creating a system to become self sustaining. Cat adoptions have tripled since the adoption center opened, and all of the animals are enjoying love and cuddles from volunteers, and strutting their stuff for potential adopters. The adoption center serves as a community hub to celebrate our animals, educate the public, and inspire children to make a difference, just like Kendall has. What is the cost of being human and leading a human life? Both Cassidy and Cassendre are about to find out. Two women, one soul. Cassidy on earth whose life stems from her other self, Cassendre- born in the afterlife. Amid the broken streets of Brooklyn, New York City and the next world, Cassidy and her alter ego Cassendre live their adventures involving a deal and a contract, yearning and fulfillment, love and madness. Is too much ever enough? Will mania knock on my door once more? Will the man of my darkest dreams leave me be - to live my life? These are the questions that plague Cassidy as Cassendre discovers that life as a human is really all that she had wished for. A delicate dance is crafted between the two lives and very different personas of Cassidy and Cassendre. Readers who come along for this ride will find The Cassendre Decree is not just about love. It questions sanity, insanity and what comes next. Bravely, eloquently and stylistically the battles and working of Cassidy / Cassendre's mind are told. The story is accompanied by an array of artwork by the author illustrating the struggles and conquests.

Food and Gender in Fiji is an ethnoarchaeological investigation of the social relations surrounding foodways on the island of Nayau in Fiji. Writing from the perspective of an archaeologist, Jones answers questions raised by her archaeological research using original ethnographic data and material culture associated women and fishing, the intersection that forms the basis of the subsistence economy on Nayau. She focuses on food procurement on the reef, domestic activities surrounding foodways, and household spatial patterns to explore the meaning of food amongst the Lau Group of Fiji beyond the obvious nutritional and ecological spheres. Jones presents her findings alongside original archaeological data, demonstrating that it is possible to illuminate contemporary food-related social issues through historical homology and comparison with the lifeways of the Lauan people. Offering a comprehensive and rigorous example of ethnoarchaeology at work, this book has major implications for archaeological interpretations of foodways, gender, identity, and social organization in the Pacific Islands and beyond.

Tanzanian Women in Their Own Words is a compilation of oral histories by Tanzanian women living with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Beginning with their earliest childhood memories, the narrators weave their life stories through adulthood, telling of the hardships and support systems in their daily lives. A rich knowledge of Tanzanian culture is embedded in each story; for instance the pivotal role tribal affiliation, polygamy, and poverty play in society is addressed. HIV/AIDS, cancer, polio, female circumcision, and TB are just a few of the health issues covered; Feinstein and D'Errico make a concerted effort to include the major medical challenges facing this developing country, including an interview with an albino woman that introduces the little discussed atrocity of albinos being murdered for body parts to be used in ritual medicine practices. In spite of the abuse and exclusion many of the women suffer, eventually each learns to live in harmony with her reality. This makes their lives inspiring and gives perspective to those facing physical challenges. Tanzanian Women in Their Own Words encourages readers to consider issues of health care, transportation, ignorance, polygamy, gender discrimination, and rural isolation. Through learning about the health challenges faced by Tanzanian women, students are introduced to the lifeways and concerns of Tanzanian culture, the challenges faced by many developing countries, and the intimate and evocative level of detail that can only be discovered through intensive ethnographic fieldwork.

Understanding the contemporary place of women's lives requires an understanding of the historical legacies. Utilizing a sociological and feminist lens, Women and Justice examines what justice has meant in the lives of women. The book includes diverse quotes relating to the notion of justice and examines numerous issues—both civil and criminal—to bring a broader understanding. As the only sociolegal text on the market that attempts to include both civil and criminal issues between two covers, the work is framed by the working term "quadraplexation"—a term grounded in the work of feminist theorist Juliet Mitchell. This framework helps us to better understand how and why women are treated the way they are in contemporary society, and it helps to frame our understanding of the historical legal decision-making process. Motherhood, marriage and same-sex coupling, paid and unpaid labor, education, criminal behavior, and women practitioners' lives in the justice system are among the topics included in the text. Suggestions for creating a more just world for women are also included.

The 2008 Israeli offensive in Gaza was described by Amnesty international as '22 days of death and destruction'. This eyewitness account brings home the horror of life in Gaza beneath the bombs. Travelling to the Gaza strip with the Free Gaza Movement, Sharyn Lock believed the greatest danger she faced was the Israeli sea blockade in a fishing boat, but on the 27th December the bombs started falling and did not stop until almost 1500 were dead. With others from the International Solidarity Movement, Sharyn volunteered with Palestinian ambulances, assisting them as they faced overwhelming civilian casualties. Her candid and dramatic writing from Gaza gave the world an insight into the conflict that the mainstream media - unable to enter Gaza - couldn't provide.

Ask most women whether they have the right to equality at work and the answer will be a resounding yes, but ask the same women whether they'd feel confident asking for a raise, or a promotion, and some reticence creeps in. This book tells how women can help themselves, and make changes in their life that can effect change on a universal scale.
