Singing Stone

Singing Stone

Thomas L Fleischner

University of Utah Press,U.S.
1999
nidottu
Integrating personal narrative and natural history, Fleischner presents what he calls a "guide to understanding" the relatively unknown landscape of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.Like a bright blue seam incised deep in solid rock, the Escalante River binds the fir forests of Utah’s High Plateau with the barren deserts of the canyonlands region in the newly designed Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. To this wild landscape, naturalist Thomas Fleischner brings both emotional engagement and a wealth of knowledge. With unabashed passion and patient and learned observations Fleischner presents this relatively unknown landscape.Singing Stone is ideal for curious visitors to the national monument as well as students of environmental studies. Fleischner’s background as a conservation biologist and former park ranger, a professor of environmental studies, and a naturalist in the Escalante Region for almost twenty years has provided him with a deep reservoir of experience and knowledge. The book’s first three chapters survey the unique geology, flora and fauna, and human history of the region. Chapters four and five trace the more recent impacts of human activities—grazing and wilderness recreation—and explore the shifts in cultural values and public policy that have occurred as a result. Examining these topics in the context of a specific landscape offers a lens through which these changes, now the topic of examination and controversy throughout the New West, can be clearly seen and, hopefully, re-evaluated.
Dialogical Planning in a Fragmented Society

Dialogical Planning in a Fragmented Society

The culmination of a critical study of neo-pragmatism philosophy and its application to planning, Dialogical Planning in a Fragmented Society begins with philosopher Stanley M. Stein's examination of neo-pragmatism and his thoughts on how it can be useful in the field of environmental design-specifically, how it can be applied to planning procedures and problems. Neo-pragmatism is an approach that has been, in the past, best expressed or implied in the writing of Hilary Putnam, Richard Rorty, and, in particular, Donald Davidson, John Rawls, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Thomas L. Harper furthers this tradition by providing the context for this theoretical application from his academic background in economics and management as well as his practical experience with political decision-making processes, community planning, and economic development. The result is a fresh synthesis of ideas-a new approach to thinking about planning theory and its implications for, and relationship with, practice. Philosopher Michael Walzer has asserted that "philosophy reflects and articulates the political culture of its time, and politics presents and enacts the arguments of philosophy." Similarly, the authors view planning theory as planning reflected upon in tranquility, away from the tumult of battle, and planning practice as planning theory acted out in the confusion of the trenches. Each changes the other in a dynamic way, and the authors demonstrate the intimate and inextricable link between them.

The Logic of Priorities

The Logic of Priorities

This book presents applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process developed by Thomas L. Saaty to deal with unstructured decision problems, together with case histories developed by him and in collaboration with others in areas of current societal concern. Its purpose is to provide the reader with examples of how to deal with unstructured problems, particularly ones involving socio economic and political issues with qualitative and intangible factors. These examples show how to use judgment and experience to analyze a com plex decision problem by combining its qualitative and quantitative aspects in a single framework and generating a set of priorities for alternative courses of action. The process has inherent flexibilities in structuring a problem and in taking diverse judgments from people, whether singly, in a group working together, or by questionnaire. Decisionmakers will profit from this approach. It makes accessible to them a framework for understanding the complexity of the system they are in as it impinges on the surrounding environment. To deal with complexity, we must first understand it. Systems thinking is necessary if all the important factors are to be considered. Complex systems problems can challenge and tax our logical capability to fully understand their causes and the consequences of any action we may take to solve them. Neverthe less, in time their effects on us tend to become better known than their causes.

The Angels of Lockhart Based on a True Story Why did these babies die? One hundred years ago almost every family knew the sorrow of loosing a child. Sickness was a constant threat, and Death a frequent visitor. But to bury seven babies? There has got to be more than "They just died." Thomas Wiley tells the moving story of his wife's step great-grandmother and the seven angels she buried in the Lockhart Cemetery. When great-grandfather Stephen Parker's first wife dies, he is left alone to raise three young children. He soon remarries; his new bride is nineteen year old Lizzie. Ollie, the oldest of Stephen's children, grieves as he sees his mother slowly being forgotten. But his grief pales in comparison to the sorrow and suspicion that he and his family experience as Lizzie's babies begin to die. And with each new, unexplained death, Ollie becomes less willing to accept that these babies just died. Who is responsible, and why? In rural Mississippi there is an old church cemetery where seven babies, all brothers and sisters, are buried. None lived past twenty-two months and each died before the next was born. According to the family, these little ones died of common childhood illnesses: innocent victims in a time when medicine had little to offer. But has the truth really been told? Were these deaths as innocent as the family would have us believe? Based on a true story, The Angels of Lockhart is a gripping look at a family whose sorrow turns to suspicion when babies begin to die. Were these deaths unavoidable tragedies, or have dark secrets been concealed by this family for the past one hundred years? Pushmataha was "The Greatest and Bravest Warrior I Have Ever Known." Andrew JacksonON THE MORNING OF SEPTEMBER 27, 1830, on the banks of a small stream in present day Noxubee County, Mississippi, the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed which resulted in the transfer of all remaining Choctaw land east of the Mississippi to the United States. Within two years, removal of the Choctaws to their new home in Oklahoma began. Of the sixteen thousand men, women, and children who made the six-hundred-mile journey, almost twenty-five hundred died of exposure and starvation on this, the first "Trail of Tears and Death." The Chickasaws, Seminoles, Creeks, and Cherokees would follow later.THE LIFE OF CHIEF PUSHMATAHA parallels the tumultuous times which led up to the removal as he dealt not only with Andrew Jackson but with other greats-Thomas Jefferson, John C. Calhoun, and Shawnee Chief Tecumseh-to try to save the lands of his ancestors. From his humble beginning as an orphan, to his reputation as a vicious warrior, and later a master of oratory and diplomacy, Pushmataha led his people through a time of marginal contact with the white man into an era of submission and despair-and along the way helped ensure a victory for the United States in its Second War of Independence, the War of 1812. Sadly, in the two centuries since his rise to greatness, his name, like the struggles of his nation, has faded from the memory of the American public. PUSHMATAHA-THE FORGOTTEN WARRIOR tells the story of Chief Pushmataha, the Choctaw Nation, and early Mississippi. Thomas L. Wiley is a Retired Physician and lives with his wife in Jackson, Mississippi.

An extensive Old Testament study and reference source for both the scholar and student. The volume includes Key Words, Study Notes, Expanded Help Papers, Depth of Bible Words and Places, and Detailed Reference Tables. The author includes chapters on "The Making of the Old Testament," "Why Study the Bible," and "Structure of the Old Testament" along with the Key Locations, Key People, Key Events, and a brief outline of each of the books in the Hebrew and Protestant Bible. The author includes his chronology of each book's written date, period covered, and events in various locations around the world. He considers not only "accepted" understanding of Scripture, but also reviews controversial topics such as "The Gap" theory and the JEDP theory of authorship. However the author's chronological travel through the thirty-nine books is with a consistently conservative value. Divided into fourteen sections, including "The Beginning of History," "The Patriarchs", "Moses," "The Promised Land," "The Kingdom Begins," "Solomon," "Hebrew Poetry and Psalms," "Wisdom," "The Northern Kingdom, Israel," "The Southern Kingdom, Judah," "Golden Age of Prophecy," "Judah Falls," and "Captivity and Restoration." The work will serve as a small library of information in a single volume which you will turn to over and over.
