Alf Ahlberg (1892–1979) var fil. dr, rektor för Brunnsviks folkhögskola (1931–1959), folkbildare, flitig skribent och trägen översättare. Han blev tidigt känd som en stark förespråkare för det antikt-kristna humanistiska arvet som ett värn mot samtidens fascistiska, kommunistiska och nazistiska propaganda. För Ahlberg var människovärdet avgörande. Han hade en stillsam tro på människors förnuft och på möjligheterna att vädja till dem med sakskäl. Genom sitt bildningsarbete och sin opinionsbildning påverkade han flera generationer folkrörelsemänniskor till en mer nyanserad hållning i samhällsdebatten. Han ex libris, som ritades av Einar Forseth, skildrar honom som en modern S:t Göran dragande till storms mot oförnuftets drake endast med hjälp av en stiftpenna och ett bläckhorn. Det ger en sammanfattande bild av hans tro på förnuftets och sakargumentens förmåga att besegra dumheten och ondskan.

Thure Jadestig (1922 – 2017) var under hela sitt liv verksam i svenska folkrörelser. Han arbetade med folkbildning, opinionsfrihet, alkohol- och drogpolitik, samlingslokaler men var också aktiv i Mellanösternfrågan. Aktiv socialdemokrat och fackligt engagerad hela livet omfattade hans politiska uppdrag även kommun och landsting till riksdag och kyrkomöte. I denna bok, som utges till hundraårsdagen av Thure Jadestigs födelse (3 juni 2022), återges en betydande del av hans produktion genom årtionden. Här är belyses så skiftande frågor som det kontantlösa samhället, åsiktsfrihet och debatthygien, samt egenmakt och motmedel mot elitism. Sammantagna formar sig inläggen till ett kraftfullt försvar för en humanistisk demokrati. En gång fanns det hundratals liknande båtar vid Finlands kuster. I dag är m/s J.L. Runeberg den sista i reguljär trafik. Ett levande museum med minnen av glada sommarresor under 100 år. Ett unikt fartyg med historia.1912 hette hon s/s Helsingfors Skärgård och gick i trafik mellan Porkala och Helsingfors. Sedan dess har hon överlevt både två världskrig och konkurrensen från landsvägarna. Hon är den nyländska skärgårdens egen båt, skärgårdsbåten i våra hjärtan.
