This is the story of a pilgrimage by Johnson to the gravesite of the writer Ingeborg Bachmann. Johnson meticulously observes the landscape of the city by layering its background with Bachmann's own letters, interviews and writings. The result is a personal consideration of a life and a friendship.
Headhunter: Novel

Headhunter: Novel

The first thing to be said about Uwe Timm's novel Headhunter, as every one of the many outstanding reviews on its publication in Germany noted, is that it is a thoroughly engrossing book - "gripping and entertaining from beginning to end" (FAZ). The second thing is that Timm, with a wonderfully light and precise touch, has created a multi-layered, multi-faceted book that addresses the times we live in and, most particularly, the role of money and the financial cannibalism of recent years. The narrator Peter Walter is a charmer, a master storyteller who has used that skill to siphon off millions from clients hoping to strike it rich on the commodities market. Escaping to Spain on the day his trial verdict is to come down, he intends to devote himself to his hobby, study of Easter Island. But a detective is on the trail of the missing millions, and Walter's uncle, an established author, is planning to use Walter's life story in a novel. Walter sets out to write his own intriguing autobiography - from his childhood in Hamburg's red-light district to his success in the world of high finance.

If this, Uwe Timm's enchanting novel, were a cautionary tale, the tag line would go something like this: Should you plan to be in Berlin on Midsummer Night, the time of the summer solstice - Watch Out The narrator of Timm's story is a writer who simply can't get started on his next book. So he accepts a commission to write an article about potatoes. He has some interest in the subject because of an uncle who could, remarkably, from taste alone, differentiate one species of potato from another. Since one of the authorities on the subject worked in East Berlin, our hero takes off to do some research. Rushing around the newly united city, he becomes involved in a series of madcap adventures, strange entanglements, and odd, sometimes threatening encounters. Uwe Timm spins a fascinating tale here, one filled with surprise, magic, comedy, and hope.

United States vs. German Equipment 1945
One of the great debates to come out of World War II surrounds the question of who had better equipment, the Americans or the Germans. This new book approaches that question in two ways. First, it reprints a report published by the U.S. Army analysing German equipment. This report offers an insider’s look at just what Americans thought of their opponents’ equipment. Second, it presents a visual comparison of the equipment of both sides. Mostly in colour, these photographs cover machine guns, handguns, mines, and other weapons; ammunition rounds and storage cases; tanks, jeeps, half-tracks, and other vehicles; uniforms, from caps and helmets to camouflage jackets; medical gear; communication devices; miscellaneous equipment such as binoculars, gas masks, canteens, and shovels; personal items like lighters and cigarettes; awards and insignia; and much more. Black-and-white photos depict notable commanders and show equipment in use in the field. This is a must-have reference for historians, collectors, modellers, re-enactors, and anyone interested in World War II history or military history in general. About the Author Uwe Feist is a world-renowned expert on military weapons and equipment, especially those used by Germany in World War II. He lives near Seattle, Washington.
Logic for Computer Scientists

Logic for Computer Scientists

By the development of new fields and applications, such as Automated Theorem Proving and Logic Programming, Logic has obtained a new and important role in Computer Science. The traditional mathematical way of dealing with Logic is in some respect not tailored for Computer Science - plications. This book emphasizes such Computer Science aspects in Logic. It arose from a series of lectures in 1986 and 1987 on Computer Science Logic at the EWH University in Koblenz, Germany. The goal of this l- ture series was to give the undergraduate student an early and theoretically well-founded access to modern applications of Logic in Computer Science. A minimal mathematical basis is required, such as an understanding of the notation and knowledge about the basic mathematical proof techniques induction). More sophisticated mathematical kno- edge not a precondition read this book. Acquaintance with some conventional programming language, PASCAL, assumed. Several people helped in various ways in the preparation process of the original German version of this book: Johannes KSbler, Eveline and Rainer Schuler, and Hermann Engesser from B.I. Wissenschaftsverlag. Regarding the English version, I want to express my deep gratitude to Prof. Ronald Book. Without him, this translated version of the book would not have been possible.
Growing Green

Growing Green

Pollution from fossil fuels and degraded natural lands are raising the earth’s temperature. The evidence of the causes of global warming is clear, as are its consequences. The economic impacts of climate change are already apparent and they threaten development gains. Extreme weather events have brought severe droughts to Central Asia, heat waves and forest fires to Russia, and floods to Southeastern Europe. Unchecked emissions will come at rising economic cost and increasing risk to individuals. There is a clear case for all of the world's economies to move to a low-carbon growth path. Yet, climate action has been inadequate, especially in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA). With prospects of a global climate agreement uncertain, Growing Green: The Economic Benefits of Climate Action identifies the actions that governments in the region can take to reduce the carbon footprints of their economies. It shows that many of these actions will more than pay for themselves - and quite quickly when indirect benefits such as better health and increased competitiveness are considered. To realise these benefits, policy makers in ECA need to quickly move on three sets of priorities: use energy much more efficiently, gradually move to cleaner energy sources, and increase carbon capture in soils and forests. This will require transformations in power generation, industrial production, mobility, city living, and in farming and forestry. Policy makers are justifiably worried that climate action may jeopardise economic performance and strain the budgets of poorer families. The report shows how well-designed growth and social policies can make climate action growth-enhancing while protecting the living standards of less-well-off households. The ECA Region has been a bystander on climate action, and sluggish in realising the benefits of the economic and technological innovations available to combat climate change. This book aims to help ECA become a leader in confronting this challenge. In doing so, it shows how countries in the region can make climate action-along with economic growth and social inclusion - the third pillar of their development strategies.
Motives

Motives

'Motives' were introduced in the mid-1960s by Grothendieck to explain the analogies among the various cohomology theories for algebraic varieties, to play the role of the missing rational cohomology, and to provide a blueprint for proving Weil's conjectures about the zeta function of a variety over a finite field. Over the last ten years or so, researchers in various areas - Hodge theory, algebraic $K$-theory, polylogarithms, automorphic forms, $L$-functions, $\ell$-adic representations, trigonometric sums, and algebraic cycles - have discovered that an enlarged (and in part conjectural) theory of 'mixed' motives indicates and explains phenomena appearing in each area. Thus the theory holds the potential of enriching and unifying these areas. This is one of two volumes containing the revised texts of nearly all the lectures presented at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Joint Summer Research Conference on Motives, held in Seattle, in 1991. A number of related works are also included, making for a total of forty-seven papers, from general introductions to specialized surveys to research papers.

This unique publication was written with a broad spectrum of users in mind, from the novice rockhound to the trained professional, including students, prospectors, geoscientists and mineral laboratories. It is literally a step-by-step cookbook approach to mineral identification and includes easily administered "how-to methods" some of which are proprietary. For the first time it is now possible for even a novice to derive at a reasonable positive identification of an unknown mineral sample. Surprisingly, expensive research equipment is not necessary to achieve positive results.Trained professionals and laboratories may find the publication useful as a ready reference for certain steps or methodologies that can be executed with a high degree of accuracy. In addition, integrated into the mineral identification process is an exhaustive collection of tables and charts.
