As Various as Their Land

As Various as Their Land

In 1700, ten sparsely settled colonies clung precariously to the Atlantic coast of the vast American continent, each far more firmly attached to the Old World by ties of politics, economy, and culture than they were to each other. By 1800, sixteen states, united by a common government, were poised exploit the seemingly endless resources of a new and independent nation. Throughout this century of enormous changes and challenges, one factor had remained constant: no single description captured the majority of the new country's inhabitants; no one lifestyle was embraced by a "typical American." Rich or poor, urban or rural, male or female, young or old, native-born or immigrant, northerner or southerner, slave or free, white or of color—the mixture of these characteristics and a host of others within each individual determined the shape and opportunities of everyday life. Americans of the eighteenth century were in the end, as they had been in the beginning, as "various as their land."

Anna Forthright, an intelligent, attractive woman works in a Government "think tank", which is beset with difficult problems that evade its collective methodologies and intelligence. Anna discovers an author whose ideas are so "wing-nutty", that he might be just the antidote to rejuvenate her faltering faculty. She brings Adam Mann from the Midwest to Washington to spend a week and "share his special insights" including: a thrash-free marriage-bed, vegetarian chicken soup, "killing" terrorism, fornicating angels, free international travel, and much more. Viable, provocative solutions aren't easy and can be tricker than a balloon and cactus bouquet.

Love is stronger than Pride (Sade). This book investigates more recent inquiries into the nature of love. It also presents a critical and realistic approach to love with the broader goal, through wider discussion, of promoting civility and charitable living. It does this in large part by presenting a comprehensive overview of major thinkers on love. With the exception of one author, these thinkers appeared in the twentieth century. All were widely read and continue to be read and discussed today. The goal is to promote insight and discussion about the various types of love from the varying perspective of these influential authors. The book is divided into ten chapters with an introduction and concluding chapter. The authors were chosen based on their influence but also because they provide a variety of perspectives based on intellectual orientation (psychological, philosophical, theological), different contexts and religious backgrounds. More specifically, the book is divided into three Parts. Part one addresses in general the various types of love. I survey four classic texts that put forth different types of love while at the same time exploring the nature of love more deeply, its distortions, and raising questions accordingly. These are: Erich Fromm, The Art of Loving (Chapter 1), C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves (Chapter 2), Rosemary Haughton, Love (Chapter 3), and Rollo May, Love and Will (Chapter 4). Part Two broadly addresses the origins of romantic love in Western thought, its distortions, and the proper recovery along these lines in light one's relations with God or transcendent value. Scott Peck's widely read The Road Less Traveled (Chapter 5) dispels the notion of romantic love and tries to recover what he thinks is a more genuine down-to-earth notion, while at the same time opening up a way to spiritual maturity. Robert Johnson further investigates Western distorted notions of romantic love in his book We by examining in depth the medieval myth of Tristan and Iseult (Chapter 6). Perhaps the least familiar, The Meaning of Love by Vladimir Soloviev, a Russian philosopher, theologian and mystic of the nineteenth century, argues that romantic love in its proper perspective offers a pathway to the sacred through the two lovers as portals to each other (Chapter 7). Part three addresses the broader notion of love of humanity, healing the obstacles to love, and the ultimate goal of love for the mystic. Chapter 8 addresses the work of two popular Buddhists authors, Thich Nhat Hanh and Pema Ch dr n on the centrality of love and compassion in Buddhist practice. They also offer techniques for expanding that love to all beings in order to increase compassion on the planet and heal divisions in our world. Chapter 9 addresses perhaps the biggest obstacle to love-the inability to forgive. In their Book of Forgiving, Desmond Tutu and his daughter Mpho outline four steps in the process of forgiving as the alternative to the revenge cycle. Finally, the renown Muslim scholar William Chittick summarizes the centrality of love in Islam and its ultimate aim-union with a loving and merciful God (Chapter 10). A concluding chapter offers a summary of themes and tensions identified throughout the work and make some observations based on the Canadian philosopher and theologian, Bernard Lonergan, who argued that love of God and neighbor are the most important elements of human living. In addition, each chapter contains summative discussion questions ideal for the classroom, church group, or book clubs. The book is written to a generally educated audience and includes minimal footnotes throughout. Since each chapter essentially contains one work, references to each work after the first full citation are parenthetical.

The ancients knew that a vast constellation of stars and various planets in space that are much larger than planet earth is connected with Meroz, I speak of the ancient Kabbalists and mystics ... This question about Meroz has already been asked in Psalm 8. Psalm 8: 3: When I see thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon, and the stars which thou hast prepared; 8: 4 = What is the mortal man to remember him? And the son of man, why do you visit him? 8: 5 = For thou hast made it a little smaller than angels ... And in glory and honor thou hast crowned it. 8: 6 = You have control over the works of your hands. everything you have put under your feet: It is crucial that we always quote the right sources on every single subject of Torah. The explanation on the subject of Meroz was indeed given by the Lubavithcer Rebbe, in a sich in the summer of 1969. The Rebbe explains, that based on the Book of Shoftim (Judges) chapter 5, the prophetess Deborah sings a praise song to D I told him that he helped Barack win the battle against his enemy, Sisera. In verse 20 she sings, "The stars in their ways fought against Sisera." In verse 2 she continues, "Cursed be Meroz," said the angel of the Lord, cursed bitterly be its inhabitants, for they did not come to help the Lord... Against the mighty men. And who is Meroz? According to an opinion of the Talmud, it is a planet (see Treaty Moed Katan 16a). In this way the "inhabitants of Meroz" indicate intelligent life on another planet. The context in which the reference to Meroz is found makes the Talmud define it as a planet (not a neighboring city), since it is preceded by the verse that says "the stars in their path fought against Sisera." Therefore, it follows that Meroz refers to a heavenly body in which the inhabitants did not come to help Barak. The subject of free will is also brought up by the Rebbe: "If any extraterrestrial life forms are discovered, these will be nonhuman life forms. This is based on the biblical belief that human life, bestowed with the power of free will among the good. and evil, was offered in this way exclusively upon Adam and Chava on the earth... The human race is unique in that it was given free will and the Torah, the word and Law of Gd, whereby right from wrong can be known .... Any extraterrestrial discovery would only intensify our responsibility to protect, refine, and elevate the entire universe and all of its elements - plant mineral, and animal - and thus transforming them into channels of Divine energy, using them to live a better and more virtuous life. "This work shows this, this Kabbalistic view of the various inhabited worlds.Know this deep secret.Open your mind to infinity.
