Alfred de Vigny föddes 1797 i Loches i Loiredalen men kom att leva största delen av sitt liv i Paris. Efter att ha tjänstgjort som officer i ett drygt tiotal år verkade han som poet, dramatiker och romanförfattare. Han var en av förgrundsgestalterna i den franska litterära romantiken. År 1845 blev han ledamot av Franska akademien. Han dog 1863 och begrovs pa Montparnasse-kyrkogården. Under sitt liv skrev han en dagbok som blev upptäckt efter hans död. Där skriver han om sitt skapande, antecknar idéer till romaner och dikter, samlar utkast och rannsakar sig själv. Likaså beskriver han personstrider, litterära kamper och sitt liv som ledamot i Franska akademien.
