GIS for Critical Infrastructure Protection highlights the GIS-based technologies that can be used to support critical infrastructure protection and emergency management. The book bridges the gap between theory and practice using real-world applications, real-world case studies, and the authors’ real-world experience. Geared toward infrastructure owners and first responders and their agencies, it addresses gaps in the response, recovery, preparedness planning, and emergency management of large-scale disasters. It also explains the first principles of CIP, introduces the basic components of GIS, and focuses on the application of GIS analysis to identify and mitigate risk and facilitate remediation. In addition, it offers suggestions on how geospatial and emergency response communities can come together—and with combined knowledge—work toward viable solutions for future improvements. Provides a narrative of critical lessons learned through personal experience during the response to Hurricane KatrinaContains examples demonstrating how geospatial technologies may be applied to fire serviceSummarizes lessons learned from ten community collaboration studies GIS for Critical Infrastructure Protection serves as a reference for infrastructure owner’s police, fire, paramedics, and other government agencies responsible for crisis and emergency response, and critical infrastructure protection. The book benefits first responders and infrastructure owners working to ensure the continued safety and operability of the nation’s infrastructure.

Understanding Psychopathology: South African Perspectives 3e provides a solid introduction to the study of mental disorders that incorporates socio-cultural, psychological and biomedical dimensions. It refers to criteria from both the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the International Classifications of Diseases (ICD-10) to describe and define mental disorders. It also looks at the ICD-11, and how this new version has been harmonised with the DSM-5. The third edition of this book, previously published as Abnormal Psychology revised second edition, presents South African debates and data to ensure that it is relevant to the local context. In addition, research from the rest of Africa has been integrated into the book to show how other countries in our region are grappling with topical issues. This book is aimed at second- and third-year students following courses in Psychopathology or Abnormal Psychology as part of a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Social Sciences degree at Universities. It has been written by academics and practitioners from across South Africa.

Leading for Change in Early Care and Education

Leading for Change in Early Care and Education

Featuring both research findings and practical recommendations, this book presents an innovative framework for nurturing leadership in the care and education of young children. Early educators are often seen as the objects of change, rather than the architects and co-creators of change. Douglass calls for a paradigm shift in thinking that challenges many long-held stereotypes about the early care and education workforce’s capacity to lead change. Case studies show how educators use their expertise every day to make a difference in the lives of children and families. These accounts demonstrate concrete strategies for expanding current thinking about who can be leaders for change and for developing more inclusive pathways for leadership. This book has the potential to revolutionize the field with a new model for developing and nurturing innovative, entrepreneurial, and skilled early educator leaders capable of driving transformative change—from classrooms and home-based programs to communities and beyond. Includes a cross-disciplinary examination of leadership, improvement, and innovation, a framework for building ecosystems that supports professional growth and teacher retention, case studies that reveal immense untapped potential from within the early care and education workforce, and a critical look at the current state of leadership and quality improvement in early childhood education.

This book examines and describes aspects of acute grief that are peculiar to those who have lost an adult son or daughter. The essays in this volume express the view of scholars, clinicians, social workers, and individuals who have personally experienced the loss of an adult child. Each contributor describes his or her experiences within the scope of thanatology itself--a discipline whose focus is on the practice of supportive physical and emotional care for those whose lives are threatened, with an equal concern exhibited for the well-being of their family members. A philosopy of caregiving is proposed that reinforces alternative ways of enhancing the quality of life; introduces methods of intervention on behalf of the emotional status of all involved; and fosters a more mature understanding of the dying process and the problems of seperation, loss, bereavement, and grief.

Banking on Beijing

Banking on Beijing

China is now the lender of first resort for much of the developing world, but Beijing has fueled speculation among policymakers, scholars, and journalists by shrouding its grant-giving and lending activities in secrecy. Introducing a systematic and transparent method of tracking Chinese development projects around the world, this book explains Beijing's motives and analyzes the intended and unintended effects of its overseas investments. Whereas China almost exclusively provided aid during the twentieth century, its twenty-first century transition from 'benefactor' to 'banker' has had far-reaching impacts in low-income and middle-income countries that are not widely understood. Its use of debt rather than aid to bankroll big-ticket infrastructure projects creates new opportunities for developing countries to achieve rapid socio-economic gains, but it has also introduced major risks, such as corruption, political capture, and conflict. This book will be of interest to policymakers, students and scholars of international political economy, Chinese politics and foreign policy, economic development, and international relations.
