Air safety is right now at a point where the chances of being killed in an aviation accident are far lower than the chances to winning a jackpot in any of the major lotteries. However, keeping or improving that performance level requires a critical analysis of some events that, despite scarce, point to structural failures in the learning process. The effect of these failures could increase soon if there is not a clear and right development path. This book tries to identify what is wrong, why there are things to fix, and some human factors principles to keep in aircraft design and operations.Features Shows, through different events, how the system learns through technology, practices, and regulations and the pitfalls of that learning process Discusses the use of information technology in safety-critical environments and why procedural knowledge is not enough Presents air safety management as a successful process, but at the same time, failures coming from technological and organizational features are shown Offers ways to improve from the human factors side by getting the right lessons from recent events
Aviation Law and Governance
Exploring the intricate relationship between law, economics, and global politics, this book examines the regulatory environment of the aviation industry.Tracing the historical development of aviation law, the book has a particular focus on how economic polycentrism and the liberal international economic order have influenced the sector's regulatory framework. It discusses the aviation industry's responses to unforeseen global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts, providing a detailed analysis of the legal mechanisms that ensure industry stability and resilience. Key topics include the role of arbitration in resolving disputes, the impact of international regulations, and the critical contributions of both public and private actors in shaping aviation law. Additionally, the book explores the challenges posed by new and emerging technologies, such as the increasing automation in aviation systems and the legal considerations surrounding cybersecurity in aviation operations. The collection also features diverse international case studies, offering practical examples of legal challenges and solutions in different contexts. By examining the intersection of various legal disciplines and the global nature of aviation, this comprehensive exploration not only reflects on past and present challenges but also provides forward-looking insights into the future of aviation law.The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of air transport law and dispute resolution, offering a thorough understanding of the legal and economic complexities facing the industry today.
Avicenna’s Theory of Intentionality

Avicenna’s Theory of Intentionality

Intentionality – how thoughts represent reality – lies at the heart of many contemporary philosophical questions in the philosophy of mind. Over the past 20 years, Avicenna’s conception of intentionality has received considerable scholarly attention. This book provides the first comprehensive analysis of Avicenna’s theory of intentionality. Demonstrating how Avicenna distinguished theories of meaning (ma?na as signification) from intentionality (‘the power to represent’), this work presents his theory of intentionality as a form of non-reductive representationalism. It argues that, for Avicenna, cognitive intentionality is explained by the existence of a representational power ultimately rooted in the rational soul as immaterial self-awareness. Furthermore, the book demonstrates that Avicenna’s thoughts on intentionality cannot be neatly assimilated into contemporary naturalistic or phenomenal approaches, as his theory strikes a balance between the two. This book offers a novel and systematic perspective on contemporary debates surrounding Avicenna’s theory of cognition and intentionality. Scholars and students of medieval philosophy, Islamic intellectual history, and philosophy of mind will find it essential reading. It is also suitable for academic libraries, philosophy publishers, and those exploring non-Western philosophical traditions.

Designed at the start of the 1960s, the Short SC.7 Skyvan had to overcome considerable challenges—including two engine changes—before it was accepted by operators, but overcome them it did, laying the foundations for a family of aircraft that remained in production until 1992. Used for both cargo and passenger transport, and more recently a favourite of skydivers, the Skyvan’s overtly boxy shape has earned it many nicknames from the ‘Shoebox’ to the ‘Flying Shed’. This book delves into the origins of the design and its development through several versions, including some design studies that were never built. It includes a thorough survey of Skyvan operators, both civil and military, a look at what it’s like to fly, and an assessment of its safety record. Also included is a photographic walk-around of the main features of the design, which will be of interest to scale modellers. With many previously unseen photographs and drawings, this is the most comprehensive history of the Skyvan ever published, and the first in an exciting new series on aviation workhorses.
