In Pursuit of Meaning

In Pursuit of Meaning

Baruch A. Levine

muu
In a career spanning almost five decades, Baruch Levine’s numerous publications reflect his wide-ranging interests and areas of expertise in the study of the Hebrew Bible, the ancient Near East, and early Judaism. In Pursuit of Meaning brings together 51 of the most important articles that Professor Levine produced during his years at Brandeis University (1962–69) and New York University (1969–2000, emeritus 2000–). The first volume, containing 27 articles, focuses on the study of religion in the biblical and ancient Near Eastern worlds from a number of perspectives, ranging from close philological analysis of written sources to anthropological studies of ancient cultic practices. In the 24 articles of the second volume, Levine engages broader aspects of ancient Near Eastern society, from legal institutions of various types to larger societal forms of organization. This volume also contains some of his more incisive lexicographical and philological contributions to the study of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages. The flavor of Prof. Levine’s work is captured in this paragraph from his introduction to these two volumes:“Looking back, and reviewing my writings, I realize what it is that I have been seeking all along. I have been in pursuit of meaning, employing scholarly methods, primarily philology and semantics, to the exegesis of ancient Near Eastern texts, preserved in several languages, principally the Hebrew Bible. I regard language as the key to meaning. This conclusion would appear to be self-evident, and yet, philology is often sidelined in favor of engaging larger frameworks. Most of all, I challenge the notion that we already know the meaning of the words and clauses central to the texts under investigation, and may proceed directly to other considerations without first re-examining the smaller units. Again and again, that policy has resulted in flawed interpretation, and in missed opportunities for learning. This is not to say that scholars should stop at the smaller units, and, indeed, the tendency to do so has been largely responsible for the reaction against Semitic philology so noticeable since the latter part of the 20th century. It is our challenge to move outward from focal points to the circumference, from text to context, from content to structure.”

Baruch A. Brody

Georgetown University Press

A pioneer in the theory of pluralistic casuistry, the idea that there are almost as many facets to moral choices as there are cases that call for choices, Baruch Brody takes issue with conventional bioethical wisdom and challenges the rigid principalism of contemporary bioethics. His views have been seen as controversial, but they are firmly held, and convincingly argued - all of which have led him to be one of the most widely discussed and highly admired bioethicists of our time. He argues for the fundamental distinction between active and passive euthanasia, for a need to reconceptualize approaches to brain death, and for the right of providers to unilaterally discontinue life support. He shows support for the waiving of the requirement of informed consent for some research, for the widespread use of animals in research, and for the use of placebos in many international clinical trials. When it comes to morality as it is practiced in medicine, Brody makes clear that the ethical issues are never as simple as black and white - that there are myriad factors and fine nuances that can and should challenge decision making as it is commonly practiced in difficult medical cases. In this collection, delving thoughtfully and systematically into methodology, research ethics, clinical ethics, and Jewish medical ethics, he tackles thorny life-and-death questions head-on and fearlessly. He casts a light into all the corners of end-of-life decisions - a field in which he has exemplary credentials - while illuminating a new understanding of morality and ethics. The introduction outlines Brody's approach, defines the terminology used, and contrasts his ethical positions with much of the competing literature. "Taking Issue" will be invaluable to students and scholars in medical ethics, bioethics, and philosophy of medicine.

The book presents models that are suitable for managing a teaching system. These models grew and were modified based on dozens of field studies that were carried out within the framework of the "Distance Learning Laboratory" at Bar-Ilan University. Researches carried out by the research team attempted to identify and define variables that are significant and essential for activation of learning systems. Within this framework they tried to define various goals of learning and methods for activating learning systems. The relation between the method and the learning goal enabled them to try to define the teacher's role and contribution, and the role of the technological system. Each goal requires a different method and the teacher's role and the role of the technological system are different for each goal. Complete harmony and co-ordination exists between the goal of learning, the teaching method, the teacher's role and the role of the technological systems. Educated and accurate integration of these factors will lead to the achievement of the learning goals. The effectiveness of learning is determined by the extent to which it succeeded in achieving the learning goals.
No One Bears Witness for the Witness
Born in Bucharest, Romania after World War One to a poor Jewish family, exposed to the virulence of pre-World War Two Romanian antisemitism, Baruch Cohen experienced directly the advent of fascist antisemitism in the pogrom he terms the Bucharest "Night of Broken Glass" in January 1941. Impressed into forced labor in a work camp, aware of and evading the death camps set up in occupied Transnistria, Baruch survived the Holocaust and left Communist Romania for Israel with his family. After several years there, they came to Montreal, Canada in 1959. Upon his retirement in 1988, Cohen did graduate work in Jewish history, became Research Chair in the Canadian Institute for Jewish Research, and made it his life's challenge to bear witness for the millions of Jews who suffered and died in the Holocaust. This memoir not only tells one person's remarkable story, but also shows how one courageous and persistent person--by researching, teaching, and bearing witness--can be a model for the fight against antisemitism and Holocaust denial today.
