Emergency physicians assess and manage a wide variety of problems from patients presenting with a diversity of severities, ranging from mild to severe and life-threatening. They are expected to maintain their competency and expertise in areas where there is rapid knowledge change. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is the first book of its kind in emergency medicine to tackle the problems practicing physicians encounter in the emergency setting using an evidence-based approach. It summarizes the published evidence available for the diagnosis and treatment of common emergency health care problems in adults. Each chapter contextualizes a topic area using a clinical vignette and generates a series of key clinically important diagnostic and treatment questions. By completing detailed reviews of diagnostic and treatment research, using evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs, and prospective observational studies, the authors provide conclusions and practical recommendations. Focusing primarily on diagnosis in areas where evidence for treatment is well accepted (e.g. DVTs), and treatment in other diseases where diagnosis is not complex (e.g. asthma), this text is written by leading emergency physicians at the forefront of evidence-based medicine. Evidence-based Emergency Medicine is ideal for emergency physicians and trainees, emergency department staff, and family physicians specialising in the acute care of medical and injured patients.

Sports journalism has seen massive upheaval in recent years. Today’s 24/7 sports networks, streaming services, and social media platforms bring sports coverage and live events to consumers anytime, anywhere. But despite the increase in the number of media outlets and the speed by which news is delivered and consumed, the basic tenets of sports journalism remain, albeit with a few new wrinkles. Embracing this dynamic, Introduction to Sports Journalism provides students with the practical knowledge and tools to succeed in the evolving field of sports journalism. While other texts repeat the “sports journalism is changing” refrain, Introduction to Sports Journalism sheds light on how and why it’s changing. Through these discussions students are challenged to formulate their own perspectives on contemporary sports journalism, journalistic expression, and how these concepts fit in today’s evolving media and societal landscapes. The text begins with an overview and history of sports journalism and traditional media. Also discussed is the impact of today’s nontraditional journalists: the bloggers and videographers outside traditional media channels. The core of the text then focuses on developing practical skills required to work in the sports journalism field, including knowing how and what to write to craft compelling stories. Much attention is paid to analytics, what they are, their variations across sports, and how to interpret and use them effectively. Also featured are digital media (blogs, podcasts, and social media platforms) and the technological tools used to create content. Sports journalism and public relations often overlap, and the text explains the nuances of the respective functions. Public relations tools such as media guides and game notes are presented, as well as a section on crisis communication. The pressure to “break the story” can tempt even the best journalist to plagiarize or fabricate stories or skip fact checks. The text covers journalism ethics and provides best practices for avoiding traps. Racial and gender bias and the importance of providing equitable coverage are also discussed. Additionally, legal issues such as copyright, privacy, discrimination, defamation, reporter’s privilege, and first amendment rights are addressed. The book concludes with a discussion of career paths and challenges facing the industry. The landscape is changing and, in response, the authors provide career advice for students entering the field. In the chapters you’ll find Industry Profile sidebars featuring interviews and conversations with practicing sports journalists. Also included are Time-Out activities throughout the chapters and end-of-chapter discussion questions, applied activities, and practical exercises, all designed to engage students more fully with the content and apply learning to real-life situations.Introduction to Sports Journalism provides a comprehensive overview of contemporary sports journalism-spanning all media platforms and sport organizations-to prepare students for a dynamic career in sports journalism.

What good is a rattlesnake? What purpose do animals serve? All species play a vital role in their biological communities, and the removal of just one can have a noticeable and catastrophic ripple effect. Yet social and political pressures frequently pit species conservation against economic progress and prosperity, and scientists fear that we may be in the midst of a mass extinction event. Brian R. Chapman and William I. Lutterschmidt make the case that the effort to preserve animals is the responsibility of every Texan and that biodiversity contributes enormous economic value to the citizens of Texas. Texans on the Brink brings together experts on eighty-eight endangered and threatened animal species of Texas and includes brief descriptions of the processes that state and federal agencies employ to list and protect designated species. Species accounts include a description of the species accompanied by a photograph, an easy-to-read account of the biology and ecology of the species, and a description of efforts underway to preserve the species and its required habitat. Sobering examples of species that were once part of the Texas fauna but are now extinct or extirpated are also given to further demonstrate just how vulnerable biodiversity can be. All species require healthy habitats, and every species—even a rattlesnake—provides important services for the biotic communities in which they live. It is imperative to learn as much as we can about these animals if we are to preserve biodiversity successfully in Texas.

The North Carolina Shore and Its Barrier Islands is the latest volume in the series, Living with the Shore. Replacing an earlier volume, this thoroughly new book provides a diverse guide to one of America’s most popular shorelines. As is true for all books in the series, it is based on the premise that understanding the changing nature of beaches and barrier islands is essential if we are to preserve them for future generations.Evidence that the North Carolina shore is changing is never hard to find, but recently the devastation wrought by Hurricane Fran and the perilous situation of the historic lighthouse at Cape Hatteras have reminded all concerned of the fragility of this coast. Arguing for a policy of intelligent development, one in which residential and commercial structures meet rather than confront the changing nature of the shore, the authors have included practical information on hazards of many kinds-storms, tides, floods, erosion, island migration, and earthquakes. Diagrams and photographs clearly illustrate coastal processes and aid in understanding the impact of hurricanes and northeasters, wave and current dynamics, as well as pollution and other environmental destruction due to overdevelopment. A chapter on estuaries provides related information on the shores of back barrier areas that are growing in popularity for recreational residences. Risk maps focus on the natural hazards of each island and together with construction guidelines provide a basis for informed island management. Lastly, the dynamics of coastal politics and management are reviewed through an analysis of the controversies over the decision to move the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and a proposed effort to stabilize Oregon Inlet. From the natural and historic perspective of the opening chapters to the regional discussions of individual barrier islands, this book is both a primer on coastal processes for the first time visitor as well as a guide to hazard identification for property owners.

Originally published in 1989. The pursuit of excellence is much discussed with reference to education, but the question remains, ’How can a school become excellent?’ This book demonstrates that excellence depends on good management which, in turn, depends not only on a clear understanding of good management theory, but on the ability to translate theory into practice. The authors offer profound insights into three crucial areas of leadership: culture, structure, and public accountability. Drawing on areas outside education, such as advertising and business, they discuss many innovations that are already current - flexitime, the vertical curriculum, mastery learning, community support - and depict ways in which these can be brought together into a total educational experience. More strikingly, however, they look ahead, examining the potential changes to our concept of schooling: for instance those brought about by the growth of information technology. This book emphasises that at the heart of outstanding schooling are visionary leadership, a clear sense of purpose, and creatively conceived and flexible support structures.
