Since 2004, Wienerberger AG, the world’s largest manufacturer of bricks and other clay building materials, has biannually presented the International Brick Award as a scene for outstanding achievements in brick architecture. The 12th edition of this global master class in 2026 saw 894 submissions from 86 countries, more than ever before. Brick 26 features the 50 nominees and the winning designs in five categories, selected by an international jury of experts, through concise texts, atmospheric images, as well as site and floor plans, views, elevations, and sections. They impress with their exceptional architectural quality and demonstrate the creative and constructive versatility brick as a building material with nearly five millennia of unbroken tradition. The increasing reuse of historic bricks and the search for passive climate solutions characterise many of the submitted designs. Topical essays are contributed by distinguished practitioners and teachers of architecture, publicists, and historians, including Fabiola Büchele and Jeanne Autran-Edorh, Helena Glantz, Christian Heuchel, Renske van der Stoep, and Dávid Zubreczki. Brick 26 offers an inspiring global journey across contemporary brick architecture that is shaped by history, innovation, and creativity.

Environmental pollution arising from rapid industrialization poses serious risks to human, animal and ecosystem health, with heavy metals representing one of the most persistent and hazardous contaminants due to their bio-accumulative nature. Brick kilns, a widespread and largely unorganized industry in the UT of Jammu & Kashmir, emit particulate matter, toxic gases and heavy metals that enter the soil-plant-animal continuum, ultimately contaminating the food chain. This book examines brick kilns as chronic environmental stressors through a One Health lens, assessing their influence on soil quality, fodder crops, dairy cattle health and milk safety. Using a comparative field-based approach, environmental and biological samples from kiln-affected areas and matched control sites were analyzed for lead, cadmium, chromium and essential trace elements like iron, copper and zinc. Elevated levels of lead and chromium were detected in soils, plant materials and cow milk near brick kilns, with milk concentrations exceeding permissible limits and posing significant public health concerns. While overt disease patterns were limited, reproductive inefficiency and mineral imbalances were evident
Brickmaking and Brick Building in The Midlands (1437-1780)
Brick building came to the Midlands in the 15th century when its adoption reflected its prestige amongst the aristocracy and episcopacy. This study explores its wider acceptance and diffusion and describes the pattern and volume of a locally distinctive material. By 1780 its practical advantages saw its use in churches, chapels, gardens, estate buildings and early industrial factories. As 'hard' brick it was a significant factor in the development of industrial kilns. Based on documentary sources the text examines such factors as the technology of brickmaking, the price of bricks, building costs, the availability of other materials, the impact of fire and the social value attached to brick. It particularly emphasises the visual impact of brick on the landscape, for example in 1789 Lord Torrington recorded that 'At Grantham they leave of the stone and build with flaming red brick of which Newark is built and looks like a new town.'

The True Love Story of Charito & Lutz OstwaldCharito's awake dream was surreal. The night was magical, and the music was romantic. The Vienna Waltz, Blue Danube, was captivating. It was almost thirty years ago, but in her heart and mind, it was only yesterday. Villa Colombo: September 16, 1990. She was visiting her best friend, Lyza, in Toronto, Canada. As she was getting ready for a ballroom dance with her friends, Susan and George, she slipped into a beautiful milky two-piece dress suit bought in Saudi Arabia and wondered, Will I ever meet Mr. Right? She accentuated the dress suit with an oversized royal-blue silk ribbon. She made French braids in her hair and accessorized it with a matching royal-blue Swarovski crystal silk ribbon. Her makeup was just right. The friends made their way to the dance. Lost at first, they finally found Villa Colombo at ten o'clock that chilly night. The ballroom was elegant, with glistening chandeliers and high ceilings. Charito gazed at hundreds of couples dressed to the nines, dancing the Vienna Waltz. Susan, George and she were seated close to the main entrance of the ballroom. A man looked dapper and crisp, sitting across the room. He had a clear view of where she was seated. Lutz, the man who would become her husband after ten short days, walked towards Charito's table and introduced himself. Her Prince Charming had arrived, and she felt like Cinderella. All her dreams came true in that instant. A man meeting a woman in a differentcountry, in a passionate circumstance, was a whirlwind. Two different worlds with different values collided, an enigma that can only be described as destiny. After that memorable night, a love story began. An everlasting, endless love was formed. Was it fate? Was it a coincidence? Is it pure love? It is timeless, though? Is it forever? And the reality was unthinkable, as with death comes a separation of life. It's a real, true-to-life story that describes a love so unique it has a word of its own to describe it: Brickrose.

Bricks and Mortar is the book we all promise to write but never had the time. In 2007 my surgeon insisted I needed hip surgery to repair damage caused from a lifetime in construction and I seized the moment. Bricks and Mortar begins in 1970 when I was just 16 and is two books in one! A journey of hip replacement surgery recorded in real time alongside my adventures in the construction industry. My latest book Yorkshire Bred isbn9780244369934 begins in 1954 charting my childhood adventures and life at Wallingfield, my family home. Humour, History, Adventure and Antics are in abundance for your pleasure and enjoyment. Both books are available worldwide!
