The World According to Bridget Jones: Discourses of Identity in Chicklit Fictions examines the cultural functioning of a popular contemporary strand in mainstream Anglo-American literature, known as chicklit . Assuming that the interpretive potential of chicklit novels is connected with the process of identity formation, the book points out the possibility of the reader's identification with certain fictional discourses permeating the convention. The study focuses on complex links between Anglo-American cultural discourses and narrative constructions of identity and explores narrative representations of contemporary family, love, and sexuality. It also tackles the relation between chicklit and consumerism, reconstructing salient characteristics of contemporary consumer culture and the position of the fictional female consumer within discourses of body, beauty, and shopping.
Based on the real life of Bridget Mary Larkin, aka Tipperary Mary. We journey back to Ireland, to follow the story of a young girl, growing up without her father, who dies before she is born. At the age of 15, she finds the body of her stepfather, a man with a history of mental illness, who has hanged himself in the family home, leaving behind his natural daughter (Bridget's half-sister, Philomena). Following the death of her mother, Bridget finds love with a local lad, Bill. But when her brother - now head of the household - discovers the relationship, he stops it, threatening Bill - then beating and raping Bridget. Bill is forced to flee to England, while Bridget endures a terrible life at home at the hands of her brother. Finally, after giving birth to her brother's child at a single mother's institution, she has her child removed for adoption and she flees to England in search of Bill and a new life. She eventually tracks him down - and they fall into each other's arms. However, Bill is now married with a child of his own. They begin an affair, and she adopts his surname - but Bill, wracked with guilt, returns to his wife. Now pregnant with Bill's child, Bridget's drinking becomes worse. As her life spirals out of control - her daughter, Phyllis (named after her beloved young half-sister Philomena) is born. Bridget holds onto the child she has had with the love her life for as long as she can - but is finally forced to let her go. Will they ever meet again...?

THE UNFORGETTABLE TRUE STORY BEHIND SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING MEMOIR, FINDING TIPPERARY MARY. A brutal and touching account of the life of Bridget Tipperary Mary Larkin. She faced poverty, bereavement, cruelty and abandonment many times over yet never lost the heart to pursue true love. Returning to rural Ireland in 1938 and a young girl full of hope and expectation, A Song for Bridget recounts a series of tragic events that eventually bring her to Manchester and Birmingham and a desperate daily struggle to survive. Bridget s haunting story, told for her by her daughter, is a perfect example of both the fragility and resilience of the human spirit.
The Liber Celestis of St Bridget of Sweden vol I

St Bridget of Sweden (1303-73) began to experience supernatural revelations as a lady-in-waiting at the Swedish court in 1335. After her husband's death she left the court and founded a monastery for nuns and monks which became the basis of the Brigettine Order. Her visions continued after she left Sweden for Italy in 1349, and she spent the rest of her life in pilgrimage and religious activities. The visions, some of the Passion and others concerned with political and religious events of her day, were recorded in Latin by her spiritual directors, as the Liber Celestis. The mystical equivalent of a medieval manual for preachers, the work points us to what was best and worst in late medieval spirituality. It was several times translated into Middle English but the only translation hitherto available has been the partial and truncated version published in 1929. The present work is a critical edition of one of the two complete Middle English translations of the Liber, contained in British Library MS Claudius BI. This first volume consists of the text and a brief introduction to the Liber. The second volume will include a study of the manuscript and the translation; a full commentary, explanatory notes, bibliography, and glossary.
Universal Holiness: 21st Century Spiritual Guidance from Bridget of Sweden, Catherine of Siena and Edith Stein

This is the first publication in English providing a profound and detailed understanding of the spirituality of Saint Bridget of Sweden, Saint Catherine of Siena and Edith Stein (Saint Teresa Benedict of the Cross). Philosopher Elodie Boublil reflects on the feminine theology of these saints to show its relevance for today's world and the Church. Beyond their European anchorage, the testimony of these three women is a 'proclamation of hope'. They bear witness to Christ-Way (Bridget from Sweden), Truth (Catherine of Siena) and Life (Edith Stein/Teresa Benedict of the Cross)-and to the Holy Spirit which shaped their hearts. Through their lives and teachings the co-patronesses of Europe remind us of the urgent necessity to reopen a path to interiority to better serve others, showing thereby the unity of contemplation and action. These women embodied the 'culture of the encounter' and the spirit of fraternity that Pope Francis calls for and the universal call to holiness made by the Vatican II Council.

The present study has analysed Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary comparatively in relation to the genre of the novel of manners. As the novels have been compared, the times in which they were written have been examined concerning their impact on the novels. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, as one of the most widely known novels in English literature, is explored as one of the representatives of the novel of manners genre. Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary, a popular novel in chick literature, is examined as a modern adaptation of the novel of manners. Since an exploration of the features of the novel of manners as regards the novels requires background information on the genre, its definition, subject and characteristics have been reviewed. The novel of manners is concerned with the issues of manners, class distinctions, financial matters, courtship and marriage. As these aspects of the genre are explored in the novels comparatively, an analysis of Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary in relation to the features of the novel of manners is presented.
