Paris is arguably the most alluring city in the world, yet it also gave rise to Paris Syndrome, a psychiatric condition afflicting people deeply affected when the city fails to meet their expectations. For all who love the wonders of Paris, there are others who remember it with disdain. Twenty-three-year-old Elliot Martin arrives in Paris to experience the city while hoping to build a relationship with John, his estranged uncle. When John was Elliot's age, he visited Paris for a short trip, escaping a life that was crumbling before him in Australia. He fell in love with the city and never left, writing a best-selling novel that saw him considered the hottest new property in world literature. Thirty-five years later, he has never rekindled that success. Like his uncle a generation earlier, Elliot's trip was seen by others as running away from his problems. He maintained he was running towards the solutions. Can he be the peacemaker that brings his extended family together? Will Paris give him the inspiration to get his own life back on track? The possibilities are endless in the City of Light.

How does it feel to live in a lie? Beckett Dawes was barely making it through community college and still lived with his parents. He never felt completely comfortable in his life, there was always a yearning for something more, although he could never find his way. Today was like every other day in Beckett's life, until a quiet girl from one of his classes said, "I know what you are, do you?" Never did he imagine those few words would cause his world to come crashing down around him. His entire life was a lie, and the monsters he thought were only in movies were real, very real. Natasha Cushlin had one dream - to become a Warrior. Her training was the only reason she noticed the two men following the boy in the library. Who knew that a simple act would cause her to question everything in her life. Could she give up everything she wanted just to be loved?

Journeys to the Ends of the Universe presents a tour through the universe from the big bang onward. The book explores the limits of knowledge where scientific fact overtakes and merges with the wilder speculations of science fiction. The beginnings of galaxies, stars, planets, and even life itself are related back to the raveled turmoil of the first few seconds and years of life in the cosmos. The journey continues past the ultimate fate of the solar system to probe the nature of supernovae. The future of galaxies, clusters of galaxies, super-clusters of clusters of galaxies, and so on leads toward the finale, where the author provides some bizarre musings of physicists and astronomers, suggesting possible destinies for the universe stretching its present age billions of times into the future.

A concise introduction, Optical Astronomical Spectroscopy appeals to the newcomer of astronomical spectroscopy and assumes no previous specialist knowledge. Beginning from the physical background of spectroscopy with a clear explanation of energy levels and spectroscopic notation, the book proceeds to introduce the main techniques of optical spectroscopy and the range of instrumentation that is available. With clarity and directness, it then describes the applications of spectroscopy in modern astronomy, such as the solar system, stars, nebulae, the interstellar medium, and galaxies, giving an immediate appeal to beginners.

Fundamental Electrical and Electronic Principles covers the essential principles that form the foundations for electrical and electronic engineering courses. The coverage of this new edition has been carefully brought in line with the core unit 'Electrical and Electronic Principles' of the 2007 BTEC National Engineering specification from Edexcel. As the book follows a logical topic progression rather than a particular syllabus, it is also suitable for other Level 3 students on vocational courses such as Vocational AS/A Level, City & Guilds courses and NVQs, as well as those taking foundation courses at pre-degree level including HNC/HND.Each chapter starts with learning outcomes tied to the syllabus. All theory is explained in detail and backed up with numerous worked examples. Students can test their understanding with end of chapter assignment questions for which answers are provided. The book also includes suggested practical assignments and handy summaries of equations. In this new edition, the layout has been improved and colour has been added to make the book more accessible for students.Additional electronic resources featuring supplementary worked examples and additional chapters can be found at https://www.routledge.com/9780750687379
Bulk Solids Handling

Bulk Solids Handling

An understanding ofthe properties and the handling characteristics of liquids and gases has long been regarded as an essential requirement for most practising engineers. It is therefore not surprising that, over the years, there has been a regular appearance of books dealing with the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, fluid flow, hydraulics and related topics. What is surprising is that there has been no parallel development of the related discipline of Bulk Solids Handling, despite its increasing importance in modern industry across the world. It is only very recently that a structured approach to the teaching, and learning, of the subject has begun to evolve. A reason for the slow emergence of Bulk Solids Handling as an accepted topic of study in academic courses on mechanical, agricultural, chemical, mining and civil engineering is perhaps that the practice is so often taken for granted. Certainly the variety of materials being handled in bulk is almost endless, ranging in size from fine dust to rocks, in value from refuse to gold, and in temperature from deep-frozen peas to near-molten metal.
Physiological Functions of Cytochrome P450 in Relation to Structure and Regulation
Research on the cytochrome P450 family of genes has traditionally been dominated by forms participating in drug metabolism. This has occurred in spite of early discovery of steroid hydroxy lase P450 cytochromes in the adrenal gland. More recently, contributions on the characterization and regulation of P450 cytochromes involved in biosynthetic reactions have been found at the international meetings on cytochrome P450 and in the several books on the field. Key recognition that P450 cytochromes should be recognized in a physiological context was provided by an international meeting in Jerusalem in 1991 and the subsequent publication of the proceedings in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (43, number 8, 92). Like this meeting, this book seeks to place equal weight on the physiological processes that are controlled by the products of reactions at usually very selective cytochrome P450 forms. Each of the authors was asked to discuss the molecular regulation of these P450 forms. Each of the authors was asked to discuss the molecular regulation of these P450 forms in the light of these physiological processes. In some cases the physiological role of the cytochrome P450 and even the natural substrate are unresolved, but a pattern of strong endocrine regulation is indicative of a hidden function. As more and more low abundance P450 genes are uncovered, the need to address potential physiological activities becomes more pressing. It is almost infinitely more difficult to identify a physiological substrate than to clone a new form.
Operational Efficiency in Forestry

Operational Efficiency in Forestry

It is our conviction that professional skill in forestry will develop more readily and more efficiently if forestry students are presented with a clear understanding of the im pact of the physical factors that both enhance and inhibit forestry activities. Part I is analytic, written as a basic text for undergradu ates in courses such as logging, transport, forest engineer ing and even forest management. It deals with the fundamen tals of technology in forestry as determined by the physical environment. The analytic approach serves two purposes, to bring about a clear understanding of the real world of the forest and to develop tools through which efficiency and productivity can be explored, understood and improved. The principal author of this volume was Prof. Ulf sundberg. Part II discusses in some detail a wide variety of practical problems encountered by foresters. It describes harvesting systems and the principles of management and control of forest operations. The influence of the forest on operations is described at length, the terrain, topography, forest soils as well as the engineering characteristics of trees and forest stands. It also considers the impact of oper ations on the forest. The principal author of this volume was Dr. Ross Silversides. Chapters 11, 12 and 13 were written by-Prof. Sundberg.
Licensing Theory and French Parasitic Gaps
The study of parasitic gap constructions (e. g. these are the reports; which you corrected _; before filing _i) has been a very lively area of research over the last decade. The impetus behind this lies mostly in the margi nality of the construction. Clearly, the intuitions that native speakers have about parasitic gaps do not stem from direct instruction; hence, it is reasoned, such knowledge follows from the restrictions imposed by Universal Grammar. Furthermore, it is unlikely that any principle of Universal Grammar refers specifically to parasitic gap constructions; their syntactic and interpretive properties must instead follow entirely from independent principles. My own interest in the phenomenon was sparked a few years ago, when, in a novel, I came across a sentence like the following: Chait un armateur; dont Ie prestige _; reposait largement sur la fortune _;, 'he was a shipbuilder of whom the prestige was largely based on the wealth'. As the indices indicate, the interpretation of the French sentence is un ambiguous: both the prestige and the wealth necessarily pertain to the same individual. In this aspect, the sentence much resembles the English parasitic gap construction above: in the former case too, the comple ments of correct and file must corefer with the noun phrase heading the relative (the reports). Yet, there is an important difference between the two constructions. Verbs like correct and file subcategorize their com plements.
Annotated Bibliography of Quaternary Vertebrates of Northern North America
This book is the first annotated bibliography of Quatenary vertebrates of Canada, Alaska, and Greenland. It focuses on highlights (species mentioned, locality, geological age, stratigraphic positions, etc.) of nearly 1000 items published between 1821 and 2000, dealing with the remains of fishes, amphibians, reptiles and, mainly, mammals that lived from about 2 million to five thousand years ago. A significant feature of the book is the extensive radiocarbon-date table - a first attempt to systematically and comprehensively record direct dates on vertebrate fossils from northern North America. It features more than 2000 dates listed by genus, species, date, laboratory number, locality, specimen description and references/remarks, this table will allow students of extinctions-particularly near the end of the Pleistocene about ten thousand years ago-a much clearer view of its nature and timing in northern North America.

Tragic History of the Sea

Tragic History of the Sea

C.R. Boxer

Compelling stories of shipwreck, adventure, and death on the high seas, now back in print. The sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were a time of great colonial expansion, marked by a mercantile frenzy of ships carrying merchants, aristocrats, missionaries, sailors, Inquisitors, botanists, and statesmen pursuing the spoils of empire. Among the narratives that chronicled these voyages, those of the Portuguese are unequaled. C. R. Boxer’s fascinating translations of famous Portuguese shipwreck stories detail the disasters and terrors plaguing the perilous sea trading route between Portugal and India. In the tradition of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Defoe, and Poe, these dramatic stories of shipwreck-and those who lived to tell about it-represent existence and survival pushed to the limits. They describe disastrous turns of fate and miraculous rescues, heroism and cowardice, and offer the exhilaration and sheer emotive appeal of a tale of adventure well told. Often circulated in pamphlet form, these stories recounting the dangers and terrors of storm-tossed ocean voyages and the fate of castaways in distant lands were a popular genre, rife with compelling and often gory details. This first ever paperback edition includes a new translation of the tragic tale of Captain Manuel de Sousa SepÚlveda, shipwrecked with his family on the sands of Africa in 1552, the previous English versions of which have long been unavailable. Vividly descriptive and engrossing, these tales of selfishness, cruelty, despair, pirates, mayhem, and harrowing storms will captivate readers.
