Daniel Bell is perhaps the most famous sociologist of his generation. He has been hailed as the prophet of the emergence of a new society, the postindustrial society, and as one of the leading conservative critics of contemporary culture. In this invaluable introduction, Malcolm Waters presents Bell's arguments clearly and fairly, as well as noting the problems with his work. The three books that have made Bell famous, The End of Ideology, The Coming of Post-Capitalism are drawn upon, as well as his lesser known works on education and social forecasting. A thoroughly comprehensive account of a key, albeit highly controversial, contemporary sociological figure.

The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. Each volume presents contemporary responses to a writer's work, enabling students and researchers to read for themselves, for example, comments on early performances of Shakespeare's plays, or reactions to the first publication of Jane Austen's novels. The carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to journalism and contemporary opinion, and little published documentary material such as letters and diaries. Significant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included, in order to demonstrate the fluctuations in an author's reputation. Each volume contains an introduction to the writer's published works, a selected bibliography, and an index of works, authors and subjects. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.
Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones (1881-1967) played a significant role in the emergence of phonetics as a fully developed academic discipline in the first half of the twentieth century. His views on the subject not only provided the foundations for the British tradition but also had a considerable, and often underrated, impact on the American structuralist school. This eight volume collection makes available the first editions of Jones' standard books, i.e. The Pronunciation of English (1909), An English Pronouncing Dictionary (1917) and An Outline of English Phonetics (1918). In addition, Jones' crucial pioneering works, now out of print for many decades, are made easily accessible to scholars once again.Numerous articles encompassing a variety of phonetic/phonological topics, for example, phonemic analysis, juncture, models of pronunciation, and historiography, are also included (converted where necessary from the original phonetic transcription to the conventional orthography).Much unpublished work, ranging from lecture notes on the sound systems of French, Spanish and Italian, to hitherto unpublished details of Jones' dealings with celebrities such as George Bernard Shaw and the Poet Laureate Robert Bridges, appears here for the first time. Also incorporated are extracts from his correspondence with prominent contemporary linguists such as David Abercrombie, Roger Kingdon, Harold Palmer and H. J. Uldall.

Daniel Dennett
SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY PRICE!(Valid until 3 months after publication)Daniel Dennett has been one of the central voices in the philosophy of mind for at least the past forty years. Unlike most philosophers of his generation, Dennett’s work has resonated far and wide. It has powerfully influenced the development of cognitive science, robotics, developmental psychology, and artificial intelligence. Indeed, his work has led to many new lines of inquiry. For example, he has developed a theory of consciousness which provides an approach to naturalizing mind which circumvents many of the most significant philosophical arguments against the possibility of a scientific explanation of consciousness. The daunting quantity (and variable quality) of literature available on Dennett makes it difficult to discriminate the useful from the tendentious, superficial, and otiose. Moreover, because no comparable philosopher has had a profound impact across such a wide range of disciplines and on intellectual culture in general, responses to Dennett’s philosophy are dispersed across a broad range of scientific, philosophical, and cultural domains. That is why this new title in the highly regarded Routledge series, Critical Assessments of Leading Philosophers, is so urgently needed. Edited by John Symons, this new Routledge Major Work is a four-volume collection of the best scholarship on Dennett; the collected materials have been carefully selected from a wide range of academic journals, edited collections, research monographs, and other sources. The tightly focused organization of this collection allows users quickly and easily to access both established and cutting-edge assessments of Dennett’s work. The set is also made for irresistible browsing. With comprehensive introductions to each volume, providing essential background information and relating the various works to each other, Daniel Dennett is destined to be an indispensable resource for research and study.
