The Presidents of the United States on the Presidents of the United States: The Early Republic, George Washington to John Quincy Adams
The Presidents of the United States on the Presidents of the United States is a comprehensive historical resource for anyone interested in the early days of the US presidency. The first six presidents of the United States were remarkable men. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and John Quincy Adams in effect shaped the office into what it is today. Arguably, they were the most extraordinary men ever to lead the nation-and their influence endures. The six men were contemporaries, and five of them served in the Continental Congress. They knew each other well and frequently expressed their opinions on the presidency and each other through letters, speeches, public documents, autobiographies, and memoirs. Author and historian David Anthony Clark spent ten years assembling this comprehensive collection of presidential quotes. Each is presented without commentary, allowing readers to arrive at their own interpretation of its meaning and importance. Standing alone, each quote is notable. Viewed together, they reveal fascinating ongoing stories from the Revolutionary War through the nineteenth century-commentaries that illuminate the development of a nation's political system as well as the thoughts of the men who helped found Western democracy.

Ambulance Chasers

A series of photographic diptychs that investigate the behavior of images and offer an account of American precarity. Ambulance Chasers offers a series of photographic diptychs by the artist Abraham Adams: on the left, the faces of personal injury lawyers photographed from roadside billboards; on the right, the landscapes they survey. The gesture is a double rotation: each photograph is imagined as the spectator of the other, and in each pairing, the exorbitant promises of the animated lawyers are deflated by their juxtaposition with an often featureless roadside landscape. The ambulance chasers smile, grin, grimace, scowl; their hair is neatly coiffed, slicked back, unnaturally dark. They gaze at country roads, busy highways, empty intersections, blue skies, building sites, and parking lots. They offer assistance--at a price. Adams's conceptual performance and art historian David Joselit's text tell a story of American precarity. Joselit's text unrolls alongside the photographs like a long, broken caption. Adams and Joselit conceived their collaboration as an investigation of the behavior and poetics of images--both in the world as billboards and in the book as reproductions--in a visual and textual language quite different from standard theoretical texts. In a long interview, they explore the project's aesthetic and historical concerns, focusing on its hybridization of typologies central to post-World War II photography--the conceptual catalogs best exemplified by the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher and their students, and the "anti-heroic" American landscape, as charted by artists ranging from Ed Ruscha to Lewis Baltz and Robert Adams.

A volcano erupts and villagers flee their homes. This text is taken from a series that is a collection of stories, rhymes and fact books for school libraries and reading at home. The series moves on from stories told in simple sentences with basic grammatical structures (HOP), through freer use of language (STEP) to the level of reading reached at the end of Primary School (JUMP).
Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases in Public Health Practice
Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases in Public Health Practice is a readable, lively introduction to the topic. Devoted specifically to the methods required to study infectious disease, this book is an ideal introduction that provides students with the requisite skills to conduct, evaluate, and understand the field of infectious disease epidemiology. The book is organized in two sections, Foundations, and Diseases and Agents. Foundations covers history of the practice, study designs and surveillance, microbiology concepts; immunologic concepts, computer-based tools; vaccines, and nosocomial (hospital-based) infections.Part two, Diseases and Agents, is organized around key categories of infectious diseases, including: airborne, diarrheal, transmitted via blood and bodily fluid; vector-borne; and helminthic. Each chapter interweaves historical case studies as they relate to each specific topic. These vignettes will help to illuminate the present (i.e., 21st century) practice of infectious disease epidemiology. Each chapter will begin with an overview of the key concepts that will follow. Each chapter will end with approximately a dozen study questions to assist students with their appreciation of the material. Each chapter will also include a selected bibliography to provide sources for further reading. Chapters, as appropriate, will include mathematical problems for hand-calculation as well as resources for infectious disease epidemiology computer-applications. The text will include a range of appropriate teaching aids, e.g., teachers' manual, students' study guide (with solutions to selected mathematical problems in the text), and guided exercises.Part One: Foundations 1: Infectious Disease in Historical PerspectiveEarly Concepts in Infectious Diseases and Epidemic DiseasesGerm Theory and Disease Investigation in the 19th Century (John Snow/Cholera, Hinle-Coch Postulates)Beginning of Basic Public Health Measures (Sanitation, Vaccines, Antibiotics)Post-WW II Epidemiologic Transition (shift from mortality due to infection to chronic/behavioral)Emerging Diseases in Developing Countries2: Study Designs and SurveillanceReview of Study Designs (case studies, ecological studies, case control studies, cohort studies, experimental studies)Disease Surveillance Methods (sources of data)3: Microbiology of Infectious DiseaseMicrobiological tools for infectious disease epidemiologyBasic laboratory techniques (microscopic, DNA/RNA)4: Immunologic Concepts: Host-Pathogen InteractionsDifferent types of host-immune responseAntigensAntibodiesImmunosuppression (role in infectious disease)5: Computer-Based ToolsMathematical modeling of infectious disease outbreaksGeographic information systems6: Vaccine InterventionDevelopment of vaccines for primary prevention of disease (diphtheria, typhoid, polio, measles, mumps)Future/Emerging vaccines (malaria, rotovirus)7: Nosocomial InfectionsCommunity-based infections (eg, physician's office)Institutionally-based infections (eg, hospital)Antibiotic resistancePart Two: Diseases and Agents8: Airborne Infectious DiseaseInfluenzaEpidemiologic and demographic Historical significance of influenza pandemicsTypical aetiologiesInfluenza epidemiology and the significance of antigenic shift/drift Influenza: Patterns of mortality and morbidityAcute Respiratory InfectionsTypical aetiologiesHost Risk factorsMeaslesHistorical perspectives prior to introduction of vaccinesRationale of vaccine use for measlesEmerging concerns about vaccine-associated sequelae9: Diarrheal and Gastrointestinal DiseaseViral EtiologyRotavirus, etcEmerging Rotaviral vaccinesBacterial EtiologyE. coliVibrio choleraeOther bacterial pathogensParasitic EtiologyEntamoeba histolyticaNecator americanusGiardia lambliae10: Disease Transmitted via Blood and Bodily FluidsHIV and AIDS AIDS in historical perspectiveImmune reponse to the Human Immunodeficiency VirusOpportunistic Infections associated with AIDSViral HepatitisNon-HIV STDs11: Vector-Borne DiseaseMosquito-Borne (e.g., malaria, Yellow Fever, West Nile etc.)Tick-Borne (e.g., RMSF, Lyme Disease, etc.)Other Arthropod Vectors12: Helminthic DiseaseHookwormDiseaseSchistosomiasisOther Geohelminthes
