We pray for our own needs and for the needs of others. We pray in the face of conflict, and we pray for forgiveness. And we can learn how to pray by praying and being prayed for by others. In this guide we learn from biblical examples such as Mary, Abraham, Moses and Daniel, gaining new insights and experiences in the adventure of prayer. This revised LifeBuilder Bible Study features additional questions for starting group discussions and for meeting God in personal reflection, together with expanded leader's notes and an extra 'Now or Later' section in each study.

This accompanying book to Mankiw and Taylor’s Economics does three things. First, it reinforces the text and improves the student’s understanding of the material presented in it. Second, it provides the reader with experience in using economic theories and tools to solve actual economic problems, that is it bridges the gap between economic concepts and economic problem solving. Finally, the Workbook and Study Guide includes a self-test to confirm areas of successful learning and to highlight areas needing improvement. Each chapter in the Workbook and Study Guide corresponds to a chapter in the main textbook - Mankiw and Taylor’s Economics.
Obsession: A Study of Male Body Obsession in the USA
Millions of men in the United States have a secret obsession: they are preoccupied with the appearance of their bodies. They are worried that their body is inadequate; their skin scarred, genitals too small or their torso insufficiently muscular. In fact, men today are almost as concerned about their appearance as are women. In this new study, David Metcalfe takes a look at the causes and consequences of the male body image phenomenon that is sweeping across the developed world.
Go and Study: A Pluralistic Guide To Using Different Torah Commentaries

Go and Study: A Pluralistic Guide To Using Different Torah Commentaries

"Who is wise? The person who learns from everyone, as it is said, 'From all of my teachers I have gained wisdom' (Psalm 119:99)" (Pirkei Avot 4:3).This quotation of Shimon Ben Zoma can be extended to mean that everyone has something to teach and something to learn. If this is true on an individual level, it also is sound for Jewish students of different denominations and backgrounds and people of different faith traditions learning from one another as well. This guide invites you to take advantage of the embarrassment of riches presented to the learner of Torah (the Five Books of Moses) in the 21st century. Orthodox Jews can learn from Reform and Feminist Torah commentaries, and Progressive Jews can grow in consciousness from studying Hasidic texts and Rashi. Today, there are many kinds of Torah commentaries available in English, and the most open-minded and open-hearted way to approach Torah learning is an "all of the above" approach. This guide will help the person who wants to engage in the study of the Torah portion of the week and use multiple Torah commentaries from different backgrounds. This approach has been tested in a Jewish Day School setting as well as synagogue and has been found to be deeply rewarding. In this guide are selections in Hebrew and English of a section of each week's Torah portion and guide questions, directing you to the Jewish denominations' main Torah commentaries you will commonly see in the pews. It also directs you to other mainstream Torah commentaries (even one written specifically for teens), and it includes page numbers to make looking up answers efficient. The idea is that you will sit with a friend, this guide, and the volumes referenced here and look up different the guide questions in the various books. You will then have your own questions and probably become distracted by other topics as they come up. Next thing you know, an hour will have gone by as you have been lost in Torah study. You will then hopefully gain new appreciation that people of different Jewish religious backgrounds all have something to to teach each other, and we can increase ahavat yisrael - love of the people Israel - in the world. And we can all be united by Torah study. We can follow Hillel's direction: "Love your neighbor as yourself. That is the whole Torah, now go and study " (Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 21a)All translations are from Sefaria.org and are in the public domain.
Study Commentary on Romans: for Bible Students and Teachers

Study Commentary on Romans: for Bible Students and Teachers

David A. Karns

This revised Study Commentary on Romans is the result of studying Romans with 'fresh eyes' not encumbered by, or seeking proof for, any particular set of doctrines. That alone sets this commentary apart from many others. Rather, this commentary lets the Biblical text speak for itself - at times with surprising and exciting results And by engaging the richness of the original Greek and the context in which Paul wrote, this book shows how passages often have a range of possible meanings, and how different translations or Bible versions are collections of choices others have made, many letting doctrine drive translation instead of the other way around. This book aims at the 'accessible' center of the very wide area between the purpose and minutia of an often ponderous academic commentary and a usually superficial and unchallenging Sunday school curriculum. Specifically, it aims to challenge Christians who may be well-versed in what the Bible says, but are lacking in its meanings beyond 'school-approved' formulas. But it also is designed to be useful for the teacher and serious Bible explorer. What did the author say, what did he mean then, and how is any of that relevant to Christians today? These are questions with which we all wrestle. This book does not seek to answer all of these questions for its readers and teachers, or make comment on every detail. The text is often clear enough that detailed treatment is simply unnecessary. Rather, this commentary seeks to facilitate serious Bible explorers in finding their own answers. As Romans 14.5 says, Let everyone be fully convinced in his own mind.
A Qualitative Study of the LeaderShape Program
Revision with unchanged content. Student leadership development programs are an emerging topic of conversation within the field of student affairs. This paper uses the personal narratives of five recent graduates of the LeaderShape program to consider student perceptions of the effects of this program. A literature review discusses recent publications in the field of student leadership development. The interview data collected in this study confirm the findings of this recent research, including generally positive leadership experiences, improved racial relations, and the importance of small group interactions. Additionally, this thesis includes a cross-case analysis and discussion section that present several themes that emerged from participants' narratives. Recommendations for future research and practice associated with student leadership development are also presented. This book would be beneficial to anyone working with the LeaderShape program or other collegiate leadership programs. Both student affairs practitioners as well as college students interested in leadership will benefit from the themes and research in this work.
Study of Unit Selection Text-To-Speech Synthesis Algorithms

Study of Unit Selection Text-To-Speech Synthesis Algorithms

David Guennec

Editions Universitaires Europeennes
2017
pokkari
This book focuses on the automatic speech synthesis field, and more specifically on unit selection. A deep analysis and a diagnosis of the unit selection algorithm (a lattice search algorithm) is provided. The importance of having the optimal solution is discussed and a new unit selection implementation based on a A* algorithm is presented. The IRISA TTS system, built for the study, is also presented. Three cost function enhancements are also presented. The first one is a new way - in the target cost - to minimize important spectral differences by selecting sequences of candidate units that minimize a mean cost instead of an absolute one. This cost is tested on a phonemic duration distance but is applicable to others. Our second proposition is a target sub-cost addressing intonation. It is based on coefficients extracted through a generalized version of Fujisaki's command-response model. This model features gamma functions modeling F0 called atoms. Finally, our third contribution concerns a penalty system that aims at enhancing the concatenation cost. This system is tempered by a fuzzy function that allows to soften penalties for units presenting low concatenation costs.
