David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson are two of America's preeminent film scholars. You would be hard pressed to find a serious student of the cinema who hasn't spent at least a few hours huddled with their seminal introduction to the field-Film Art, now in its ninth edition-or a cable television junkie unaware that the Independent Film Channel sagely christened them the 'Critics of the Naughts.' Since launching their blog, Observations on Film Art, in 2006, the two have added web virtuosos to their growing list of accolades, creating unconventional long-form pieces engaged with film artistry that have helped to redefine cinematic storytelling for a new age and audience. "Minding Movies" presents a selection from over three hundred essays on genre movies, art films, animation, and the business of Hollywood that have graced Bordwell and Thompson's blog. Informal pieces, conversational in tone but grounded in three decades of authoritative research, the essays gathered here range from in-depth analyses of individual films such as "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Inglourious Basterds" to adjustments of Hollywood media claims and forays into cinematic humor. For Bordwell and Thompson, the most fruitful place to begin is how movies are made, how they work, and how they work on us. Written for film lovers, these essays-on topics ranging from Borat to blockbusters and back again-will delight current fans and gain new enthusiasts. Serious but not solemn, vibrantly informative without condescension, and above all illuminating reading, Minding Movies offers ideas sure to set film lovers thinking-and keep them returning to the silver screen.

Design Analysis

Design Analysis

David E. Thompson

Cambridge University Press

An integral part of engineering design is the development of models that describe physical behavior or phenomena in mathematical terms. As engineering systems have become more complex, classic linear methods of modeling and analysis have proved inadequate, creating a need for nonlinear models to solve design problems. This 1999 text provides an introduction to mathematical modeling of linear and nonlinear systems, with an emphasis on the solution of nonlinear design problems. While encouraging the use of the computer as a tool for modeling and analysis, the aim is to discuss the basic concepts underlying computer techniques and to seek analytical solutions. Among topics covered are exact solution, numerical solution, graphical solution, and approximate solution methods; and the stability of nonlinear systems. Numerous examples show how to apply modeling methods to real engineering systems. The book also includes end-of-chapter problems and case studies of challenging design problems. Intended for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate students, this text will also serve as a helpful reference for practising engineers.

Cambridge Theology in the Nineteenth Century

Cambridge Theology in the Nineteenth Century

David M. Thompson

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2008
sidottu
Many books have been written about nineteenth-century Oxford theology, but what was happening in Cambridge? This book provides the first continuous account of what might be called 'the Cambridge theological tradition', by discussing its leading figures from Richard Watson and William Paley, through Herbert Marsh and Julius Hare, to the trio of Lightfoot, Westcott and Hort. It also includes a chapter on nonconformists such as Robertson Smith, P.T. Forsyth and T.R. Glover. The analysis is organised around the defences that were offered for the credibility of Christianity in response to hostile and friendly critics. In this period the study of theology was not yet divided into its modern self-contained areas. A critical approach to scripture was taken for granted, and its implications for ecclesiology, the understanding of salvation and the social implications of the Gospel were teased out (in Hort's phrase) through enquiry and controversy as a way to discover truth. Cambridge both engaged with German theology and responded positively to the nineteenth-century 'crisis of faith'.
