Anabaptist History- Class Notes: Class notes from Dean Taylor's lecture on Anabaptists history, given January-February 2012 at Faith Builders.
Ok.... I really didn't want to publish these class notes. These notes are unedited and pretty raw. I usually put them together a day before the class simply for the purpose of supplementing my lectures. I am sure these notes are full of typos and grammar mistakes. I really do apologies for this. I have included these notes with these lectures simply due to the constant request from people listening to the lectures. This series has been surprisingly popular. Preparing for this class was actually very good for me. I agreed to teach this series during a difficult time in my life. Studying these saints of old helped to solidify my foundations and acted as a guide for future decisions. My class was unexpectedly small. Because of this, and because I had invested so much time into the lectures, I decided to record them so that others could benefit from these messages. And wow, this proved to be truer then I could have imagined. I have received feedback from believers all over the world, from local churches to foreign missionaries. I even received a report from a persecuted Mennonite pastor in Vietnam. He was meeting with a converted kick-boxer from Thailand. They were watching the lectures night after night in their tiny apartment. It has been a blessing to get this kind of feedback. So...if you can forgive the sloppy notes I hope the lecture will be a blessing for you too as you listen. For those more grammatically gifted feel free to make the changes in grammar, format or in citing sources. Any time a significant change to these notes are made I will make the changes and replace the old file with this new one. I will also credit the people at the beginning of these notes. We have tried to stay within copyright law with the understanding that all things contained herein constitute "fair use" for educational purposes. There is enough material here that if it was organized could make a very nice accompaniment to the lectures. Perhaps someone could even end each section with questions and answers. Hey, let's consider the file an "open source document." If significant changes are made I will keep updating the notes and reprint the book. But for now.... I apologies...all you get are these scattered notes. Thanks
Dean Acheson and the Creation of an American World Order
This compact and accessible biography critically assesses the life and career of Dean Acheson, one of America’s foremost diplomats and strategists. As a top State Department official from 1941 to 1947 and as Harry S. Truman’s secretary of state from 1949 to 1953, Acheson shaped many of the key U.S. foreign policy initiatives of those years, including the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the rebuilding of Germany and Japan, America’s intervention in Korea, and its early involvement in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Right up until his death in 1971, Acheson continued to participate in major policy decisions and debates, including the Cuban missile and Berlin crises and the Vietnam War.Dean Acheson can justifiably be called the principal architect of the American Century. More than any other individual, Acheson is responsible for designing and implementing the ultimately successful U.S. Cold War strategy for containing the Soviet Union. In an even broader sense, Acheson played an instrumental role in creating the institutions, alliances, and economic arrangements that, in the 1940s, brought to life an American-dominated world order. The remarkable durability of that world order—which has remained the dominant fact of international life long after the end of the Cold War—makes a careful examination of Acheson’s diplomacy especially relevant to today’s international challenges.
