Mary Edna Fraser has taken the art of batik to otherworldly heights. An internationally renowned artist, Fraser has had works grace galleries, museums, and public buildings throughout the United States - creating wonder, awe, and an awareness of the environment around us as few artists have had the talent and vision to manage. Using fabric, wax, and dye, Fraser has transformed the techniques of batik from its ancient origins and forged new panoramas and vistas of our unique planet from the sky above us to the ground beneath our feet, and even down to the evocative landscapes that sprawl across the ocean floor. These images not only astonish us with their allure; they also remind of us of our place in the world and our responsibility to respect and care for it.Part history and guide to the challenging techniques of this form, The Batik Art of Edna Fraser affords not only a full-color introduction to Fraser's stunning perceptions of the glaciers, icebergs, coastlines, atmospheres, mountains, and rivers that grace our globe, but gives us an intimate look at the artist at work and the philosophies that guide her singular imagination as well.Bold, beautiful, thoughtful, and always visceral, Fraser's art invites us outside to see with new eyes the horizons that surround us - and inside to see ourselves in our inextricable connection with the land, the seas, the skies, the earth, as we are woven together as one in the fabric of our existence on this, our home, the vibrant blue planet hurtling through space and time.

"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin - Edna Pontellier, a woman fated to die
Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut f r Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: "Death and Sexuality in Early American Narratives," language: English, abstract: In the following paper I will subject the character of Edna Pontellier in Kate Chopin s The Awakening to a critical analysis. Edna Pontellier s death at the end of the novel is not the essential sense. Since the society of her time cannot allow such an "awakening" of individuality to take place, Edna is fated to die. Therefore death is a forgone conclusion. Given that Kate Chopin tried to paint the picture of a truly liberated, independent, and individual woman, she cannot let Edna go back to her conventional life, which would be the only alternative. Following the biography of Kate Chopin closely, the reader discovers many parrallels between Kate Chopin s life and the character of Edna Pontellier. The novel does not, as some critics of Kate Chopin s time have claimed, lack "authorial comment and judgement."1 Kate Chopin s novel was meant as a judgement of the Creole society of her time. Therefore it is important to examine the characters and the events that are crucial for the development that leads to the tragic end of Edna Pontellier. Starting with her husband, L once Pontellier, whom she does not love, I will discuss in what way the main characters Ad le Ratignolle, Mademoiselle Reisz, Alc e Arobin and Robert Lebrun are responsible for Edna s "awakening."

Global Ecosystem Change: Next-Generation Biomonitoring Using Edna and Machine Learning
Biomonitoring is a powerful tool used to assess the health and condition of an ecosystem. It involves studying living organisms and their responses to environmental changes. Biomonitoring through environmental DNA (eDNA) and Machine Learning represents a cutting-edge approach in ecological research and conservation. eDNA allows scientists to detect traces of genetic material left behind by organisms in their environment, offering a non-invasive method to monitor biodiversity. Machine Learning enhances this process by analyzing vast amounts of eDNA data, identifying species presence, and even predicting ecosystem health trends. This combination revolutionizes biodiversity assessment, offering faster and more comprehensive insights into ecosystems than traditional methods. By making use of machine learning algorithms to interpret eDNA signals, researchers can uncover hidden biodiversity patterns and monitor changes over time effectively. This synergy holds promise for advancing conservation efforts and understanding ecological dynamics in an increasingly interconnected world. Most of the topics introduced in this book cover new techniques and the applications of biomonitoring. The various technological progress that have future implications are glanced at in this book. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field.

Bring Me Some Apples and I'll Make You a Pie: A Story About Edna Lewis
Long before the natural-food movement gained popularity, Edna Lewis championed purity of ingredients, regional cuisine, and farm-to-table eating. She was a chef when female chefs--let alone African American female chefs--were few and far between. With lyrical text and watercolor illustrations, Robbin Gourley traces the roots of Edna's appreciation for the bounties of nature through the seasons. Folk rhymes, and songs about food are sprinkled throughout the text, and five kid-friendly recipes and an author's note about Edna's life are included.

Giant: Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Dean, Edna Ferber, and the Making of a Legendary American Film
Don Graham's Giant is a larger-than-life narrative of the making of the classic film, marking the rise of America as a superpower, the ascent of Hollywood celebrity, and the flowering of Texas culture as mythology. Featuring James Dean, Rock Hudson, and Elizabeth Taylor, Giant is an epic film of fame and materialism, based around the discovery of oil at Spindletop and the establishment of the King Ranch of south Texas. Isolating his star cast in the wilds of West Texas, director George Stevens brought together a volatile mix of egos, insecurities, sexual proclivities, and talent. Stevens knew he was overwhelmed with Hudson's promiscuity, Taylor's high diva-dom, and Dean's egotistical eccentricity. Yet he coaxed performances out of them that made cinematic history, winning Stevens the Academy Award for Best Director and garnering nine other nominations, including a nomination for Best Actor for James Dean, who died before the film was finished. In this compelling and impeccably researched narrative history of the making of the film, Don Graham chronicles the stories of Stevens, whose trauma in World War II intensified his ambition to make films that would tell the story of America; Edna Ferber, a considerable literary celebrity, who meets her match in the imposing Robert Kleberg, proprietor of the vast King Ranch; and Glenn McCarthy, an American oil tycoon; and Errol Flynn lookalike with a taste for Hollywood. Drawing on archival sources Graham's Giant is a comprehensive depiction of the film's production showing readers how reality became fiction and fiction became cinema.
