Coercive Confinement in Ireland

Coercive Confinement in Ireland

Eoin Sullivan; Ian O'Donnell

Manchester University Press
2012
sidottu
This book provides an overview of the incarceration of tens of thousands of men, women and children during the first fifty years of Irish independence. Psychiatric hospitals, mother and baby homes, Magdalen homes, Reformatory and Industrial schools, prisons and Borstal formed a network of institutions of coercive confinement that was integral to the emerging state. The book provides a wealth of contemporaneous accounts of what life was like within these austere and forbidding places as well as offering a compelling explanation for the longevity of the system and the reasons for its ultimate decline. While many accounts exist of individual institutions and the factors associated with their operation, this is the first attempt to provide a holistic account of the interlocking range of institutions that dominated the physical landscape and, in many ways, underpinned the rural economy. Highlighting the overlapping roles of church, state and family in the maintenance of these forms of social control, this book will appeal to those interested in understanding twentieth-century Ireland: in particular, historians, legal scholars, criminologists, sociologists and other social scientists. These arguments take on special importance as Irish society continues to grapple with the legacy of its extensive use of institutionalisation.
The Political Theory of the Irish Constitution

The Political Theory of the Irish Constitution

Eoin Daly; Tom Hickey

Manchester University Press

sidottu
The political theory of the Irish Constitution considers Irish constitutional law and the Irish constitutional tradition from the perspective of Republican theory. It analyses the central devices and doctrines of the Irish Constitution - popular sovereignty, constitutional rights and judicial review - in light of Republican concepts of citizenship and civic virtue. The Constitution, it will argue, can be understood as a framework for promoting popular participation in government as much as a mechanism for protecting individual liberties. It will be of interest to students and researchers in Irish politics, political theory and constitutional law, and to all those interested in political reform and public philosophy in Ireland.

Sinn Féin and the Politics of Left Republicanism
Sinn Fein is a growing force in Irish politics. Now the country's third largest party, Sinn Fein have been one of the central architects of the peace process and are increasingly setting the terms of political debate in Ireland north and south. Despite this, the party remains much misunderstood and often misrepresented. Sinn Fein and The Politics of Left Republicanism explores the ideological and organisational origins of the party, charts their history and recent political development and assesses their possible futures. Eoin O Broin argues that Sinn Fein is part of a distinct left-republican tradition in Irish society whose future lies in the globally resurgent radical democratic left.

Is a better Ireland possible? Can progressive social and political forces in Ireland, north and south, unite around a common programme for democratic reform, social justice and economic equality? Could such an alliance for change secure popular support?Eoin O Broin explores these questions, providing a radical political, economic and social critique of Ireland, north and south in the 1990s and 2000s. He makes an honest assessment of the obstacles to building a national alliance for change, and maps out a detailed set of political, economic and social alternatives for Ireland in the 21st century. This book will be a valuable tool for activists and analysts with an interest in the future of Irish politics.

Quantum Theory of Solids presents a concisely-structured tour of the theory relating to chemical bonding and its application to the three most significant topics in solid state physics: semiconductors, magnetism, and superconductivity--topics that have seen major advances in recent years. This is a unique treatment that develops the concepts of quantum theory for the solid state from the basics through to an advanced level, encompassing additional quantum mechanics techniques, such as the variational method and perturbation theory. Written at the senior undergraduate/masters level, it provides an exceptional grounding in the subject.

The Distant Relation

The Distant Relation

Eoin S. Thomson

McGill-Queen's University Press
2001
sidottu
The Distant Relation breaks down the artificial division between philosophy and literature by weaving contemporary philosophic arguments through close readings of Carpentier, Rulfo, Paz, and Garcia Marquez. Thomson draws the reader into the largely uninhabited space between philosophy and literature, providing new critical strategies that allow text and reader to respond to the very distance they share. These strategies involve a reconceptualization of distance that recognizes the productive and affirmative nature of separation. The Distant Relation will attract anyone interested in the ongoing struggle to overcome conventional interpretations of language, time, and identity within the broader context of philosophical trends and Spanish American studies.
Ireland in Focus

Ireland in Focus

Eoin Flannery

Syracuse University Press
2009
sidottu
From an analysis of the Guinness brand's reflection of Irish identity to an exploration of murals and film portrayals of political prisoners, this pioneering collection of essays seeks to present Ireland's relationship to visual culture as a whole. While other works have explored the imagistic history of Ireland, most have restricted their lens to a single form of visual representation. ""Ireland in Focus"" is the first book to address the diverse range of visual representations of national and communal identity in Ireland. The contributors examine the politics of visual representation from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Drawing from the areas of cultural theory, postcolonial studies, art criticism, documentary and archival history, and gender studies, the essays provide novel insights on a variety of visual-cultural forms, including film, theater, photography, landscape art, political murals, and the visual iconography of commercial marketing. Bringing together established scholars and emerging young critics in the field, ""Ireland in Focus"" breaks new ground in showcasing the essential dynamism of visual culture and its relationship to Irish studies.

Finding the next major bull market sharesHave you ever wondered what the world's largest investors rely on to make their decisions? Analysts David Fuller and Eoin Treacy count some of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, traders and investors as subscribers. Their approach to measuring the rhythm of the market has been the secret weapon of alpha generators for decades. Now for the first time a book is available that sets out the approach to market analysis they employ on a daily basis at FT-Money.com using macro, behavioural, fundamental and technical cues.At the heart of this approach is a groundbreaking application of the insights of crowd psychology to financial markets, underpinned by a factual use of technical analysis. We can fall in love with our investments. No other emotion describes why it is so difficult to sell. After all, breaking up is hard to do. Greed and Fear are useful frames of reference for commentators but Love explains much more of what's going on, and for the first time you can find out exactly how it powers (or undermines) markets – and how to make money in response.Above all, Fuller and Treacy's approach reveals something astonishing taking place in the markets right now. We are living in one of the most exciting periods of human history: a confluence of powerful themes is setting the stage for a major secular bull market in the decade 2015 to 2025. In the meantime, interest rates will need to normalise, which is likely to provide everyone with an unmissable buying opportunity. Crowd Money closes by revealing over 125 shares ideally placed to be the global bull market stars of tomorrow.
