Transnational Popular Psychology and the Global Self-Help Industry

Transnational Popular Psychology and the Global Self-Help Industry

Daniel Nehring; Emmanuel Alvarado; Eric C. Hendriks; Dylan Kerrigan

Palgrave Macmillan
2020
nidottu
Self-help books aim to empower their readers and deliver happiness and personal fulfilment but do they really live up to this? This book offers a fresh perspective on self-help culture and popular psychology. Research on this subject matter has generally focused on the USA and the Global Northwest. In contrast, this book explores the production, circulation and consumption of self-help books from an innovative transnational perspective. Case studies on Trinidad, Mexico, the People's Republic of China, the UK and the USA explore the roles which self-help's therapeutic narratives of self and social relationships play in the contemporary world. In this context, the book questions the extent to which self-help fulfils its promise of individual autonomy and contentment. At the same time, it addresses debates about contemporary political change under transnational processes of cultural standardization.

Expository Hermeneutics invites the student on a journey to a life and ministry based on exposition of the Bible. Hermeneutics provides a guide to understand the message and apply that message in its original setting and then in a comparative way in the contemporary day. We adopt the Scriptures' view of itself as God's word. As a result, we believe the Bible has a truth value as reflected in the canon of Scripture. The goal of hermeneutics defines verbal meaning as the author's willed type message read as a whole book, so that the message is communicated with a truth content to be understood. The method of hermeneutics is both read in a circular pattern and practiced as an objective task. It is objective in the sense that God authors a transhistorical message and the reader is aware of their own presuppositions and adopts those of Scripture. As such the message can be validated in its truth content. However, this does not prove it true even though it provides an evidential conviction that the truth value has been understood.

Some students hate school, and some students love it. Some students enter classrooms with an “I dare you try to teach me” look on their faces, and others bounce into class excited to learn and anxious to please the teacher. We know we can’t automatically blame teachers or schools when students don’t want to learn. But we also know that sometimes teachers and schools don’t always set students up for success, and they don’t always help them love what they’re learning. And that’s not supposed to happen. Why Kids Love (and Hate) School: Reflections on Practice investigates some of the school and classroom practices that help students love school—and some that send students in the opposite direction. Intended for classroom teachers, teacher education students, and school administrators, chapters in the book investigate a variety of topics: how schools can build effective school cultures, the “struggle” students encounter in learning, practices of other countries that help students love school, testing practices that cause students to hate school—and much more.

As featured in the hit HBR Article "A 10 Year Study Reveals What Great Executives Know and Do" Rising to Power is a time tested, wisdom-packed guide for executives desiring to be exceptional leaders as they navigate their ascent to the highest levels of their organization. Nearly two-thirds of all leaders entering executive roles lack sufficient understanding of what is required and are unprepared for what they will face, which explains why 50 percent of them fail within the first eighteen months. For decades we have known that failure rates among transitioning executives are too high, causing exorbitant costs, damaged organizations, and stalled careers. Still, little has changed in the way organizations prepare leaders to assume executive positions. Three-fourths of new executives say their organization did not adequately prepare them for the executive office. It doesn't have to be this way. If you are an executiveor you're aspiring to be oneand considering how you will navigate the ascent in your organization, Rising to Power will serve you like no other resource can. Odds are high you have watched a promising executive fail on their way up. Like many, you scratched your head, wondering, "Why didn't they see that coming?" Now you're hoping not to be the next one that falls. Rising to Power will guide you on a predictable journey of ascent, through the transitional moments and issues most common in executive failure. It will bolster your confidence, open your eyes, deepen your insight, and if you let it, reveal your own proclivities for failure that you may not even recognize. Based on a ten-year longitudinal study, Rising to Power offers a profoundly new way of looking at an executive's rise in an organization, and offers an approach to significantly increase your odds of success.

Despite the increasing necessity for information on allocating dwindling resources, resource-allocation behavior is not nearly so well understood as choice behavior (selection from two or more already defined alternatives, events, or lotteries.) Although there have been scores of books devoted to the optimal model for making resource-allocation decisions there has never been a book discussing the cognitive aspects of this behavior. This book answers the question of how people make such decisions while explaining how Linear Programming can be applied within the context of resource-allocation. It also takes the reader step-by-step into several types of problems under varying conditions, including harsh and benign environments, maximization and minimization, multi-dimensional, and cyclical problems.

This book provides an exegetical-theological-rhetorical paradigm, "the Christ-oriented approach" (Lk 24:27, 44), that facilitates accuracy, effectiveness, and practicality in preaching the New Testament use of the Old. In providing a practical expository model, and sermon preparation/evaluation principles, this work moves beyond the level of theory into the realm of praxis, and will thus appeal to practitioners as well as to academics.
