Gabriel's Conspiracy

Gabriel's Conspiracy

The plans for a large slave rebellion in the Richmond area in 1800, orchestrated by a literate enslaved blacksmith named Gabriel, leaked out before they could be executed, and he and twenty-five other enslaved people were hanged. In reaction to the plot, the Virginia and other legislatures passed restrictions on free blacks, as well as on the education, movement, and hiring out of the enslaved. Although Gabriel's conspiracy is well known among historians, documents relating to it have remained relatively inaccessible. In Gabriel's Conspiracy, Philip J. Schwarz offers a valuable selection of the documents discovered to date. Together with Michael Nicholls's complementary book, Whispers of Rebellion (Virginia), these volumes offer a complete account of the quashed slave conspiracy.

This volume presents for the first time in book form, two exciting plays by Gabriel Marcel: a powerful one act drama, The Lantern, that is in the permanent repertory of the Comedie FranAaise, and, for the first time in English, a full-length comedy in three acts, Colombyre or The Torch of Peace. This work also includes as its foreword a previously unpublished essay by Gabriel Marcel, From Comic Theater to Musical Creation, in which Marcel analyzes the role of comedy in his theater. An introduction by Joseph Cunnen situates Marcel's theater in the context of modern drama. An editor's preface introduces the two plays, and a list of Marcel's thirty plays completes the volume. Original illustrations, The Lantern and Colombyre have been sketched by Steve Healy.

In 1903, eighteen years after leading the Metis Army against the Northwest Expeditionary Force and the Northwest Mounted Police at Fish Creek, Duck Lake and Batoche, Louis Riel's Adjutant General Gabriel Dumont dictated his memoirs to a group of friends, one of whom is thought to have written Dumont's stories out in longhand during that epic meeting. This manuscript languished unseen and unpublished in the Manitoba Provincial Archives as part of L'Union nationale metisse de Saint-Joseph collection until its discovery there by Michael Barnholden in 1971. Now re-translated into English, it preserves the record of an unrepeatable oral recital, offering us a rare opportunity to view one of the central events in the history of the Metis in a new context: as perceived by one of their key heroes. Like Riel, Dumont put the interest of his people ahead of his own. Although he could neither read nor write, he was an eloquent speaker, sought after to defend Metis rights both in Canada and the United States throughout the 1880s and 1890s.Known to have spoken Blackfoot, Sioux, Crow, Cree, French and English, Dumont dictated his memoir in "incipient Michif," thought to be his first language: using Cree syntax and some verbs, with a vocabulary that was primarily French. Dumont's first-person account of the details of his early life, leading up to the events variously referred to as the Riel Rebellion, the Northwest Rebellion or the War of 1885, provide a third reading of the "Rebellion" from the point of view of its military leader, as well as many personal, cultural and historical revelations worthy of examination. In addition, Dumont's sheer strength of narrative carries these decisive events with a conviction, drama and suspense that only the tradition of oral history can deliver.

The focal point of this new publication on Guadalajara-based artist Gabriel Rico (born 1980) is the work made specifically for his Aspen Art Museum exhibition, The Discipline of the Cave. Collecting fragments of contemporary existence, the sculptor and installation artist masterfully recontextualizes familiar objects and materials, and his new pieces were specifically made in response to the architecture of the museum's ground floor galleries.Working in an Arte Povera tradition, Rico juxtaposes found items, neon and taxidermy animals in ways that convey the relationship between humans and the natural environment. Influenced by scientific approaches, geometry and philosophy, the artist creates non-mathematical equations from objects that reflect our fundamental struggle to achieve balance. Through his process of fusing the natural and kitsch, the artist has created a careful arrangement in the AAM Galleries, and Rico's portrait of contemporary life is reflected in this Aspen Art Press publication.

A singular look at Orozco’s itinerant studio practice, from the materials he collects on his travels to the finished works pulled from gallery storage Published in a dos-à-dos format, Spacetime/Working Tables simultaneously focuses on two different but related projects by Gabriel Orozco (born 1962). Orozco’s practice is grounded in his encounters with nature and the matter of everyday life. He keeps no permanent studio space; instead, he usually works at some kind of table at home or on the grass in his garden. The Working Tables are an accumulation of various objects, sketches, models and leftovers of his art making. They give a sense of Orozco’s working process in a particular environment and his subsequent experimentation. The other half of the book focuses on Spacetime, a long-term, temporary exhibition that brought together a large selection of his work accumulated from over 30 years of living in New York and exhibiting with Marian Goodman Gallery. The show consisted of items from the artist’s personal collection and gallery inventory turned into open storage.
