More than forty years after the composer's death, the music of Roberto Gerhard (1896-1970) continues to be recorded and performed and to attract international scholarly interest. The Roberto Gerhard Companion is the first full length scholarly work on this composer noted for his sharp intellect and original, exploring mind. This book builds on the outcomes of two recent international conferences and includes contributions by scholars from Spain, the USA and UK. The essays collected here explore themes and trends within Gerhard’s work, using individual or groups of works as case studies. Among the themes presented are the way Gerhard’s work was shaped by his Catalan heritage, his education under Pedrell and Schoenberg, and his very individual reaction to the latter’s teaching and methods, notably Gerhard’s very distinctive approach to serialism. The influence of these and other cultural and literary figures is an important underlying theme that ties essays together. Exiled from Catalonia from 1939, Gerhard spent the remainder of his life in Cambridge, England, composing a string of often ground-breaking compositions, notably the symphonies and concertos composed in the 1950s and 1960s. A particular focus in this book is Gerhard's electronic music. He was a pioneer in this genre and the book will contain the first rigorous studies of this music as well as the first accurate catalogue of this electronic output. His ground-breaking output of incidental music for radio and the stage is also given detailed consideration.
The Art of Gerhard Richter: Hermeneutics, Images, Meaning presents the first philosophical investigation of, arguably, one of the most popular and important painters working today, Gerhard Richter. From monochrome painting and photo realism to conceptual art and gesture-expressive painting, Richter has transformed the spectrum of 20th-Century painting. Building upon Gadamer’s notion of ‘formed images', the book outlines elements of a hermeneutics and a phenomenology of images and paintings. Moreover, the hermeneutic approach to art is combined with the crucial question of how paintings and photographs are related to each other for Richter. The author suggests that paintings “open up” the fixed relation and intentionality of photographs by idealizing and essentializing the content of the photographs. By relying upon a hermeneutical and phenomenological approach, rather than working from abstract theory, The Art of Gerhard Richter provides philosophical insights developed out of Richter’s works of art. Uncovering key philosophical aspects of Richter’s work, the author’s reflections discuss the relation between appearance and essence, the role of faith and hope, the dialectic of distance and nearness, the issues of death and terror, and the role of beauty and landscapes in Richter’s paintings.

George Bell was one of the most significant British church leaders of the mid-20th century and in many ways he came to define the involvement of British church people with the issues which arose from the Third Reich. Gerhard Leibholz, a brother-in-law of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, was one of the most senior German lawyers of the period, a refugee from Nazism who would become a founding father of the new constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany. The two figures first encountered each other in the context of dictatorship and exile and in a brilliant, sustained collaboration over many years they fashioned a vigorous moral response to the crises of Nazism, Soviet communism, total war and cold war. This volume contributes fundamentally to our understanding of the ethical, religious, legal and political debates which Hitler’s regime provoked. By uniquely treating Gerhard Richter’s entire oeuvre as a single subject, Darryn Ansted combines research into Richter’s first art career as a socialist realist with study of his subsequent decisions as a significant contemporary artist. Analysis of Richter’s East German murals, early work, lesser known paintings, and destroyed and unfinished pieces buttress this major re-evaluation of Richter’s other well known but little understood paintings. From standing next to Adolf Hitler at a construction site, to cornering a bear in a Army Post Exchange in Maine, to flying through thunderstorms in a small airplane while study freezing ice nuclei, Gerhard Langer has always had an uncanny knack for finding adventure. His memoirs describe 90 years of adventure-first as a Jewish "Mischling" (person of mixed racial status) in Nazi Germany, and then as a cowboy, scientist, husband and father, and avid hiker in the US.This straightforward and captivating life story paints a detailed picture of the struggle of surviving and thriving during the World War 2 era. Once the war was over Gerhard found himself homeless and jobless, but a citizen of the US. Looking for more adventure-for instance, a sighting of Al Capone-led him to stop in Chicago. There he found a wife instead of a gangster. A few years later, a move to Colorado led Gerhard to work seeding clouds to modify weather and later tracking stray plutonium particles in the environment. His life in Colorado also allowed him to enjoy numerous adventures in the mountains as well as participating in mission trips around the world. Gerhard celebrated his 70th birthday with a hiking trek up Machu Picchu in Peru. Retirement brought more hikes, bike trips, bike accidents, and trips to Germany to reconnect with family and reconcile his past.

Arnold Schoenberg und Roberto Gerhard begannen 1923 eine Meister-Schuler-Beziehung, die sich im Laufe der Zeit in eine enge Freundschaft verwandelte. Trotz der geographischen Distanz, die beide Komponisten trennte -Schoenberg floh 1933 in die USA und Gerhard ging 1939 ins Exil-, unterhielten sie bis zu ihrem Tode eine intensive Korrespondenz, die dank der Freundschaft ihrer Wiener Ehefrauen gefestigt wurde.Der vorliegende Band enthalt den bisher noch nicht veroeffentlichten, aus 82 Einzel dokumenten bestehenden vollstandigen Briefwechsel zwischen Arnold Schoenberg und seinem spanischen Schuler Roberto Gerhard, der nach einer langwierigen Suche und minuzioeser Arbeit in verschiedenen internationalen Archiven von Prof. Dr. Ortiz-de-Urbina zusammengetragen werden konnte.Eine erste Analyse der Briefe zwischen Arnold Schoenberg und seinem Schuler Roberto Gerhard liefert interessante Ergebnisse bezuglich des Lebens, des Werkes und der Persoenlich keit beider Komponisten und beleuchtet relevante biografische Aspekte, wie das enge familiare Verhaltnis zwischen beiden dank der aktiven Vermittlerrolle beider Ehefrauen, die Relevanz des Aufenthalts der Schoenbergs in Barcelona von Oktober 1931 bis Juni 1932 oder den verzweifelten Versuch Gerhards, mit Hilfe Pau Casals und anderer spanischer Musiker fur Schoenberg verbindliche Vertrage in Spanien zu schliessen, damit der Wiener Meister, bedrangt vom zunehmenden Antisemitismus in Deutschland ab 1932, definitiv nach Barcelona mit Frau und Kind ubersiedeln koennte. Die gesammelten Dokumente beleuchten auch den Prozess der Gestaltung mancher Werke beider Komponisten.Wenn auch Leben und Werk Arnold Schoenbergs umfassend erforscht und dokumentiert wurden und immer noch Schwerpunkt der internationalen musikwissenschaftlichen Forschung sind, bleibt Roberto Gerhard trotz seiner Relevanz als Komponist und Denker innerhalb der europaischen posttonalen Musik des 20. Jahrhunderts ein unzureichend erforschter Komponist. Als Republikaner fand er wahrend der Franco-Diktatur offiziell keine Beachtung und erst nach seinem Tode 1970, zwei Jahre nach Erhalt der Ehrendoktorwurde der Cambridge University, wurden sowohl sein Leben und Werk als auch seine Rezeption Thema der musikwissenschaftlichen Forschungsgemeinschaft. Aus diesem Grunde soll das vorliegende Buch nicht nur als Dokumentensammlung der Schoenberg- und Gerhardforschung dienen, sondern auch als Beitrag zu einer Gerhard-Renaissance verstanden werden.

In der Theologie war, über den größten Teil ihrer Geschichte, die Verwendung der Metaphysik so selbstverständlich wie heute ihre Zurückweisung. Bei Gerhard Ebeling findet sich, im Kontrast dazu, eine sorgfältige Untersuchung von Sinn und Funktion der Metaphysik in der Theologie. Seine Arbeiten zeigen, was in der Theologie überhaupt als Metaphysik bezeichnet wird und warum diese abzulehnen ist. Die Kritik an der Metaphysik scheint sich bei Ebeling außerdem, wie im allgemeinen Empfinden, von der reformatorischen Theologie herzuleiten. Ruth Görnandt bindet sie zurück an ihren zeit- und theologiegeschichtlichen Kontext und zeigt damit, dass sie nicht nur in einem bestimmten Strom protestantischer Theologie verwurzelt ist, nämlich von Albrecht Ritschl über Wilhelm Herrmann zu Rudolf Bultmann, sondern dass sie auf einen Streit um die Theologie unter den Anforderungen der Moderne antwortet. Dieser Kontext ist für das korrekte Verständnis von Ebelings Metaphysikkritik unerlässlich.
