Evil and the Child: A tragic accident....... but someone is watching
Twelve year old Alex Vodak from the small 1920's Balkan town of Zalt is wrongly convicted of killing his school friend Helge.Miro Posavec, the town drunk, had seen the two boys playing and when Helge falls into the river from a rock, he seizes the opportunity to ingratiate himself with the townspeople by stating that Alex had pushed him into the river and that he himself had tried unsuccessfully to save him.As a result of Miro's testimony Alex is convicted and sentenced to a young offenders prison, where he endures the almost daily beating by the guards, more so by the sadist Traub the head guard, who also enjoys humiliating and torturing his young charges. After a time Alex makes friends with Stefan Pevlicek, a fellow inmate, who although teaching him the rules of the prison unfortunately also leads him in a prank which results in both being sentenced to the bitter cold of the dreaded 'hole' Also they must fight off the unwelcome attentions of Traub, which results in their severe beatings by the sadist. After Stefan's sentence has expired, Alex now fifteen, unfortunately one day attracts the attention of Traub, and in the ensuing fight between them, Alex escapes and heads for neighbouring Poland where he hopes to find sanctuary and return when older to kill Miro Posavek. On making his way to Poland Alex almost dies in a huge forest, and is saved by Sol, an old hermit, whom he lives with until the old man is cruelly murdered by thieves, and Alex knowing he has been seen has to flee for his life.On route to Poland, Alex is offered work by Sarah, on her farm and who in turn seduces him. However unknown to Alex the farm is also the sanctuary of old Sol's murderers. But this time there seems to be no escape for the fifteen year old.

William Sydney Graham (1918-1986) was born in Greenock, Scotland, `beside the sugar house quays’ – a setting open to the sea. He remained a Celt, moving from Scotland to Cornwall where he found seascapes without urban clutter, just an occasional ruined tin-mine with its human echo. In the 1950s and 1960s he became a key member of the artistic scene in St Ives. A friend of T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Edwin Morgan, Roger Hilton, Peter Lanyon and many others, he could be demanding, but he gave back generously. A prolific letter-writer, he is first heard here in the passionate apprentice years, then writing from and of Fitzrovia, the Apocalypse, and his years in Cornwall after The Nightfishing (1955). We come at last to his apotheosis in the brilliance and wry wisdom of his late work. Dedication and commitment to his craft produced an extraordinary body of work during a life lived wildly and to the full. These letters (interspersed with poems and drawings) are a testament to the close intellectual and spiritual bonds with nourished his writing over many years.

Regarded as a classic text amongst teachers of adults and those working with adult groups in a variety of professional and adult community settings, "Adult Learning, Adult Teaching" has now been enlarged, updated and thoroughly revised for this fourth edition. This new fourth edition retains the direct and practical approach that has proved so successful with thousands of practitioners and contains additional chapters on: learning styles; equal opportunities; self-presentation; difficult students and 'reluctant attenders'; practical planning; attendance and drop-out; the observation of teaching and learning; guidance, progression and 'what next'; a real student's experiences of adult education with a matched critique addressed to her tutor.

This book aids clinicians in supporting and caring for transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents – youth who are born into an incongruent body. A recent study using data from 19 states reported that 1.8% of American youth identified as transgender. Many people who are transgender will experience gender dysphoria, the intense emotional distress that is caused by a discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their sex assigned at birth. In this compact volume, the authors discuss the variety of domains involved in addressing gender dysmorphia: social, psychological, medical, and legislative/advocacy. They provide clear and concise information on the types and timing of gender-affirming medications and surgical interventions and offer useful suggestions for making interactions in the clinic and the clinical space inclusive for transgender and gender-diverse youth. Among the topics covered include:identity development and gender nonconformity in early childhood and pubertythe importance of access to mental health professionals with expertise in gender nonconformitythe responsible use of developmentally appropriate gender-affirming medications and surgical interventionsrelated clinical issues such as nutrition counselling for youth receiving gender-affirming treatmentscreating a safe and inclusive healthcare environment for transgender and gender-diverse youthadvocating for transgender and gender-diverse patients by working with local and national policy makersProviding Affirming Care to Transgender and Gender-Diverse Youth is essential reading for pediatric healthcare professionals including physicians in pediatrics and family medicine, plastic surgeons, nurses, dietitians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other practitioners. Students in these fields as well aspolicy makers also would find this a useful resource.

First published in 1975, this is a book of general intellectual interest about the role of the university in contemporary society and that of university teachers in relation to their subjects, their students, and their wider political commitments. Alan Montefiore offers preliminary analyses of the family of concepts most often invoked in discussions of these problems, taking the central dispute to be between those who hold a 'liberal' view of the university and those who regard this notion as illusory, dishonest or undesirable. Six academics, representing, discuss issues of substantive conflict in light of Montefiore's initial distinctions. The volume is of particular interest to students of political and social philosophy, and political and educational theory. It is also intended for a wider readership among those who care about the political status of the universities and recognize the importance and difficulty of the problems involved in this.

Molecular Modeling Kit to accompany Organic Chemistry, 7e

Manipulating models and building molecules in 3-dimensional space is the very best way for students to develop their spatial skills (one of the key issues in organic courses) and to get a real sense of how molecules are put together. To that end, we have done everything we could to make a model set available for students at a price they can afford. The model kit is particularly customized to the Solomons Fryhle text, but can be used with any of Wiley's organic texts. Manufactured by Darling Model Kits, this custom kit was designed by T.W.Graham Solomons. The kit consists of Darling's basic Molecular Vision kit with a few additional pieces, so that p orbitals could be shown in molecules like acetylene. This customized kit also has pieces that allow linear geometry for the sigma bonds of alkynes while also having orthogonal connections at each atom for the associated p orbitals. By attaching balls of the right colors it is possible to show the lobes of the p orbitals that make up the pi bonds in an alkyne. Ball colors can be matched symmetrically to show in-phase orbital overlap, or antisymmetrically to show an antibonding state. Use of colored balls with the appropriate framework geometry is a very nice feature of the Darling model set. Pieces from Darling's inorganic model set and are used for octahedral geometry.
Van der Corput's Method of Exponential Sums

Van der Corput's Method of Exponential Sums

S. W. Graham; Grigori Kolesnik

Cambridge University Press
1991
pokkari
This book is a self-contained account of the one- and two-dimensional van der Corput method and its use in estimating exponential sums. These arise in many problems in analytic number theory. It is the first cohesive account of much of this material and will be welcomed by graduates and professionals in analytic number theory. The authors show how the method can be applied to problems such as upper bounds for the Riemann-Zeta function. the Dirichlet divisor problem, the distribution of square free numbers, and the Piatetski-Shapiro prime number theorem.
