Participation and Political Equality

Participation and Political Equality

Sidney Verba; Norman H. Nie; Jae-on Kim

Cambridge University Press
1979
pokkari
In this survey of political participation in seven nations - Nigeria, Austria, Japan, India, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia and the United States - the authors examine the relationship between social, economic, and educational factors and political participation. The book provides insight into an ongoing debate among political scientists and sociologist: why is political participation in some nations distributed evenly across economic, social, and educational lines, whereas other nations foster participation only by their privileged classes? The book treats politics not only as a dependent variable influenced by socioeconomic factors, but also as an independent variable that affects levels of political participation through variations in party systems and linkages between parties and other organizations.
Surplus Analysis of Sparre Andersen Insurance Risk Processes

Surplus Analysis of Sparre Andersen Insurance Risk Processes

This carefully written monograph covers the Sparre Andersen process in an actuarial context using the renewal process as the model for claim counts. A unified reference on Sparre Andersen (renewal risk) processes is included, often missing from existing literature. The authors explore recent results and analyse various risk theoretic quantities associated with the event of ruin, including the time of ruin and the deficit of ruin. Particular attention is given to the explicit identification of defective renewal equation components, which are needed to analyse various risk theoretic quantities and are also relevant in other subject areas of applied probability such as dams and storage processes, as well as queuing theory. Aimed at researchers interested in risk/ruin theory and related areas, this work will also appeal to graduate students in classical and modern risk theory and Gerber-Shiu analysis.

Ladies, Stop Playing and Start Obeying is a bold yet grace-filled reflective journal created to help women realign their hearts, thoughts, and actions with the will of God. This scripture-based journal invites women into intentional quiet time, space to pause, pray, reflect, and honestly examine where obedience has been delayed, avoided, or replaced with sacrifice. Through guided prompts, biblical truths, and crown-themed chapters, readers are reminded that obedience to God is not punishment, it is protection, positioning, and purpose. Each chapter introduces a different type of crown, symbolizing identity, authority, humility, surrender, discipline, and spiritual maturity. Women are encouraged to "wear and adjust their crowns," recognizing that as daughters of the King, obedience is part of walking in royal purpose. This journal gently addresses: The benefits of obedience, consequences of disobedience, common struggles women face when choosing obedience, and why obedience is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22) With dedicated sections for scripture study notes, prayer reflections, and personal journaling, Part I lays a strong foundation for spiritual growth and self-awareness. This is the first installment in a two-part women's journal series designed to help women stop playing with purpose and start walking boldly in obedience. Perfect for personal devotion, women's Bible study groups, or spiritual self-reflection.

Surgical Techniques for Asian Rhinoplasty

Surgical Techniques for Asian Rhinoplasty

Springer Verlag, Singapore

This practical book describes in detail surgical methods that yield excellent results when performing rhinoplasty in Asian patients. The coverage encompasses the full range of frequently encountered nasal deformities and the procedures employed in their correction. Precise descriptions of surgical techniques are complemented by a wealth of pre-, intra-, and postoperative illustrations as well as videos documenting actual operations. Attention is drawn to surgical pearls and pitfalls, and full guidance is also provided on patient preparation, anesthesia, and postoperative management. Rhinoplasty is a challenging procedure, and surgeons who treat Asian patients must take into account the fact that, compared with Caucasians, they have smaller noses, weaker cartilage, and thicker skin. Moreover, cultural differences and variations in aesthetic standards need to be respected. The book clearly explains the nasal anatomy for Asian rhinoplasty and its implications for surgical technique. It will serve as an ideal, easy-to-use reference for all surgeons who perform rhinoplasty in Asians, regardless of their level of expertise.

School science is dominated by textbook-oriented approaches to teaching and learning. Some surveys reveal that students have to read, depending on academic level, between ten and thirty-six pages per week from their textbook. One therefore has to ask, To what degree do textbooks introduce students to the literary practices of their domain? Few studies have addressed the quality of science curriculum materials, particularly textbooks, from a critical perspective. In this light, we are concerned in this book with better understanding the reading and interpretation practices related to visual materials - here referred to as inscriptions - that accompany texts. Our overarching questions included: ‘What practices are required for reading inscriptions?’ and ‘Do textbooks allow students to develop levels of graphicacy required to critically read scientific texts?’ Some of the more specific questions included: ‘What are the practices of relating inscriptions, captions, and main text?,’ and ‘What practices are required to read inscriptions in school textbooks?’ That is, we are interested not only in understanding what it takes to interpret, read, and understand visual materials (i.e., inscriptions), but also in understanding what it takes to engage inscriptions in a critical way. It is only when citizens can critically engage with language (texts, speech) and inscriptions that they become knowledgeable users of television, newspapers, and magazines, who can choose or leave aside particular expressions as part of the particular politics that they participate in.
