When New York chef Frank Visakay traded in the sweaty heat of the restaurant kitchen for the glorious tropical heat of Thailand, he thought he had found paradise. Not only was the lifestyle laid back, the food delicious and the beers chilled but he was even attracting the attention of beautiful Thai women. Or so he thought. With Jasmine Fever, Visakay offers a series of revelations about his and his fellow expatriates' relationships with Thai bargirls. And, as we learn from one of the eponymously named stories, perhaps he is 'looking for love in all the wrong places'.

When Jews left Aleppo, Syria, in the early-20th century and established communities abroad, they carried with them a repertory of songs (pizmonim) with sacred Hebrew texts set to melodies borrrowed from the popular Middle Eastern Arab musical tradition. This text tells the story of the "pizmonim" as they have continued to be composed, performed and transformed through the present day; it is thus an ethnography of an important Judeo-Arabic musical tradition that contributes to studies of the link between collective memory and popular culture. Kay Kaufman Shelemay views the intersection of music, individual remembrances and collective memory through the "pizmonim". Reconstructing a century of "pizmonim" history in America based on research in New York, Mexico and Israel, she explains how verbal and musical memories are embedded in individual songs and how these songs perform both what has been remembered and what otherwise would have been forgotten. In confronting issues of identity and meaning in a postmodern world, Shelemay moves ethnomusicology in to the domain of memory studies.

Night Jasmine Tree is the hidden backstory of an Indian immigrant's move to the United States because his love of a lower caste girl was rejected by his conservative family. A poignant portrayal of 'East Meets West' and 'Past Meets Present.' The novel exposes a deeply ingrained ailment of Indian society-their caste system, which pervades every aspect of life with subtle destructive force. The high caste protagonist in this contemporary novel falls in love with a lower caste girl in college. The consequences become unimaginable even when they emigrate to the U.S. The past cannot be willed away. The entertaining stories of his youth he tells his American grandchildren, reveal the silent torments and struggles that originated with his family in India. These stories, touching and sublime by themselves, provide the backbone of this novel. How long can he carry on his playful veneer? Will the past destroy him, or can he find peace? A cathartic novel of ultimate triumph of the human spirit, heartwarming and realistic; family love so purely described, it will remind the reader of their own family. A wonderful gift for all occasions. Excellent for school and college readings.
