This book offers an examination of Jeff Noon’s iconoclastic debut novel, Vurt (1993). In this first book-length study of the novel, which includes an extended interview with Noon, Wenaus considers how Vurt complicates the process of literary canonization, its constructivist relationship to genre, its violent and oneiric setting of Manchester, its use of the Orphic myth as an archetype for the practice of literary collage and musical remix, and how the structural paradoxes of chaos and fractal geometry inform the novel’s content, form, and theme. Finally, Wenaus makes the case for Vurt’s ongoing relevance in the 21st century, an era increasingly characterized by neuro-totalitarianism, psychopolitics, and digital surveillance. With Vurt, Noon begins his project of rupturing feedback loops of control by breaking narrative habits and embracing the contingent and unpredictable. An inventive, energetic, and heartbreaking novel, Vurt is also anoptimistic and heartfelt call for artists to actively create open futures.
"After Euphoria" collects Jeff Derksen's writings on art, architecture and globalism. Focusing on artistic practice and cultural critique, these essays examine the questions, research and propositions of neoliberalism's synthesis of economy and affect. Exploring the works of Rem Koolhaas, Brian Jungen, Sam Durant, Andrea Geyer, Jin-me Yoon, Ken Lum, Ron Terada, Stan Douglas, Sabine Bitter/Helmut Weber and Alfredo Jaar, Derksen reveals the effects of globalization and its influence on the production and experience of culture. A founding member of Vancouver's writer-run center, The Kootenay School of Writing, Derksen is a writer, poet, critic and scholar based in Vancouver and Vienna. His critical writing has previously appeared in "Springerin," "Archis," "Open Letter," "Camera Austria," "C Magazine" and "Hunch." Elaborate Photographic Compositions Since the late 1970s, the Canadian artist Jeff Wall has contributed significantly to establishing photography as an autonomous medium, and is regarded as one of the key vanguards of “staged photography”. Referring to his approach as “near documentary”, his images resemble documentary photographs in style and manner, but instead are meticulously composed, multilayered compositions. Synthesizing photography with elements from other art forms such as painting, cinema, and literature—in a complex mode that he calls “cinematography”—his deeply intellectual work stages fictional realities, memories and past experiences in an elaborate process. Featuring more than fifty works, this catalogue accompanying the large-scale exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler juxtaposes Wall’s iconic backlit color transparencies with his more recent black and white photographs and color C-prints, revealing a variety of references in content and form.

Jeff Koons (born 1955) became prominent in the mid 1980s by targeting the meaning of art and spectacle in a media-saturated era. Since his first solo exhibition which consisted of small-scale assemblages of toys and found objects, his later works evolved into the now iconic monumental pieces which can be found permanently installed at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. His methodical inquiry into the ways in which everyday items become works of art by reflecting our desires draws attention to the continuity of images as they pass through time, combining art historical references with colloquial imagery. This monograph, part of the 2000 Words series published by DESTE, features an essay by Massimiliano Gioni and Natalie Bell, which examines Koons' parallels to Duchamp and the function of readymades over the course of his career. Koons has created a prophecy fueled by the ecstasy of materialism, where the image or object becomes its own ouroboros consuming itself.
